I remember it like it was yesterday. Woody Stephens made sure the filly did not win the Preakness at the cost of his own charge. Day was told to send and keep her wide unless she cleared. Unfortunate. She was good enough to win the Preakness. Look where Forty Niner finished.
all is fair in love and horseracing. I was a big fan of Winning Colors at the time and almost cried during the race. I am sure everyone knew she would win if she got an easy lead.
floating her 4 wide is called horse racing. she had it her own way in the Derby and cruised, so she'd have won again if they let her have an easy lead. woody wanted to see if his horse was better, he wasn't, but the best horse won that day, and 3 weeks later
+Earl Forte He tried to do the same thing the next year with Easy Goer over SS but suffered a bitter pill to swallow there. He even objected after the race but was denied.
you all have no idea what you are talking about. Pimlico is known for having a "deep" track around the rail. When rains falls upon the track, it only makes the conditions worse. Stevens knew this and told Forty Niner to take the 3 wide path, it was just unlucky that winning colors was on the outside of him. Stevens was not that kind of a man. He probably was mad that a filly beat his colt by a nose but he would not intentionally lose a race just so another horse wouldn't win.
Well, the racing industry was hit hard by the Great Recession, and we were not seeing the stock we had come accustom to seeing in the Triple Crown races. That is why suddenly we got 2 Triple Crown winners so quickly. No competition.
she saw him in the Belmont too....apparently she had lost her mojo in the 3 weeks between the Preakness and the Belmont because she hardly put up a whimper when he ran her into defeat on the far turn
Very controversial if you're an owner and bettor. Woody Stephens took the Derby loss personal and vowed to make Winning Colors lose the next race out. If you're an owner who pays millions for racehorses and thousands in trainer's fees plus entry fees then the last thing you want is for a trainer to 'sacrifice' your horse because of your trainer's ego. Had I been the owner of Forty Niner Stephens would have been fired on the spot. It's been documented in biographies that Day was given the command by Woody Stephens to carry 'Colors out as wide as possible and pretty much duel her into submission. MIssion accomplished. As a bettor you're betting on anything but a trainer trying to prove that a filly shouldn't have won the Derby.
@@brianclark1858 This is the first I've heard of this! I wondered why the leader was in the middle of the track around the first turn... Why did the 49er team want to prevent Winning Colors from winning?
Pat Day screwed up this race, just like he has done many times in the past. But this time it was to make winning colors have a less than favorable trip. He is the worst “big race” jockey maybe ever. Any other top jock on Easy Goer, and he maybe never loses.
@@chocolatetownforever7537 Well Pat Day could have shown some integrity and played fair in the race in spite of Stephens' "orders." It probably would've cost him something in terms of employment (temporarily), but it certainly wouldn't have ruined his career , and maybe he could have taken some pride in having done the decent thing.
He was a third generation Preakness winner. Bold Ruler----Secretariat---Risen Star.
Risen star was a machine. Winning Colors not only got paced by forty niner but was pushed out 3 wide. Still placed.
Papa would have been proud!
if he had not got box in in the deby he would have won the trible crown like his daddy.
No. He didn't even come close in the derby. And he wasn't boxed in fir long.
He's a beauty .gp

Absolutely right. Gunned Forty Niner to the lead, and even carried Winning Colors out wide on the first turn.
Eddie D for the win.

bull. he showed to make sure she lost nothing else. he would've taken the rail if he only wanted to prove his horse could win.
Lukas did not look too happy after the race.
Pat Day definitely made sure Winning Colors couldn't win that race. Part of the game..

BS. I remember this vividly and the consensus at the time was that Woody was determined to ruin it for Winning Colors no matter what.
Fukn Day pulling a Cordero. The shoes on the other foot, Lukas
Woody Stevens did Winning Colors dirty.
It cost him his colt. Hope it was worth it.
would've been nice if someone made American Pharoah earn it the hard way.
exactly i don't think he was a good as everyone thinks he was

Lost all respect for Woody Stevens after this race.
Risen Star would have been a triple crown winner if not for a terrible ride in the Derby.

"personally"
why would they be booing ? the most talented horse in the race won....3 weeks later he proved it quite decisively
the boos were for the 49er connections not Risen Star.
Is that booing at the end of the race?
yeah. because the 49er group showed up just to make sure Winning colors didnt win. that's why he raced wide the entire race.
