What a beauty! He so reminds me of Secretariat his dad and Bold Ruler his Grandfather! He runs like the wind! It was refreshing to see that he was hand ridden just like Ron Turcotte rode Secretariat to Triple Crown Victory in 1973! Perhaps Secretariat never duplicated himself, but he sure came close with Risen Star!
I had bet Winning Colors, ignoring a very generous 5-1 on Risen Star. Loved watching him pay hoage to his sire with that performance, second-fastest only to Secretariat.

@@MrLew1965 The greatest domination in sports history..the late great Secretariat. His records still stand to this day and that speaks for itself. That's what? 49 yrs? Wow!
RISEN STAR ran the last half mile in the same time of his father SECRETARIAT (50"), and RS was less asked (though SECRETARIAT's early fractions were crazy).
Secretariat wasnt ridden out in that Belmont either, dont kid yourself. If he had, he might have taken another second off the Belmont Stakes record that he still owns.
I am a retired exercise rider and Risen star jockey Eddie Delahoussaye won by 15 lengths and Risen Star is the Son of Secretariat great jockey Eddie Delahoussaye is retired and trains now.
Risen Star was a great horse , if Louie Roussel would have trained the horse for more speed. He would have won the triple crown. This horse is top three all time does not get credit he deserves. I was at the Fairgrounds when this horse was running Shane Romero had the mount then Eddie Delahooussaye took over he said out of his mouth in the Kentucky Derby he did not know this horse had tactical speed he rode him differently after the Derby just go back and look at the race with Forty Niner he ran him down with no pace in the race from dead last
I disagree. He trained the horse beautifully. Horses arent machines, sometimes THEY dictate their own running style, and theres nothing you can do as a trainer to change that. Winning Colors just got away during the Derby, and ran a big one that day, and Risen Star wasnt at his best. It happens, and winning the triple crown is almost impossible to do. Louie did a great job with that horse.
Fans of Secretariat waited forever for a son who would do him some justice, and here they had one. Lasix did not help the line as it was sound. Mr. Prospector would some come to dominate the elite ranks as a sire, with Secretariat as a very strong broodmare sire.
Yeah. Secretariat would have never directly re-created himself because the X-Factor does not go from Sire to Son. It goes to Sire to Daughter to Son (i believe)
Through Terlingua (Storm Cat), and Secrettame (Gone West, who gave us Elusive Quality, who gave us Smarty Jones and Quality Road), the latter of whom won her first two or three races by poles before levelling off.
Fillies carry five fewer pounds to level the playing field, to give them a fair chance against the naturally-stronger colts. It really ticks me off when they're said to have an "advantage" because of it! If this were really the case, there'd be considerably more fillies racing against the boys, and winning. Yes, there are beasts like Zenyatta, but I don't necessarily believe that size equates directly to strength.

In my opinion Risen Star was never recognized for his ability. Unfortunately people focus on just the horses who win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and if they don’t win the Belmont Stakes they’re disappointed. In this case I think we forgot about Risen Star’s accomplishments that year because he didn’t win the Kentucky Derby or sweep The Triple Crown.
Debbie, The Derby was also Eddie's first time on Risen Star, due to the jockey change just before the Derby, he didn't do the best job on RS and admitted it after, RS just caught a bad trip. A shame.
Risen Star had LOTS of great horses in him on both sides. Besides Sec, he had Princequillo, out of Sec's dam, Somethingroyal, Ribot, one of the great horses of the last century, Nasrullah, Nearco, one of the great horses of the past century, Miss Disco, the great distance horse Discovery, and more. How could he lose?
We should have had a triple crown winner this year. Was in Stars Kentucky. Derby was just a nightmare. He would have won that race without that start. He easily won the Preakness and he demolished this field
The day before the Belmont, Risen Star had a 3f warmup in :33 and change., Roussell said he wanted :35, but the exercise rider couldn't hold him back. There was no way he was losing this race. Still the third fastest Belmont ever behind big red monsters Secretariat and Easy Goer. That's some pretty prestigious company.
