I've actually never played a mainline Dynasty Warriors game, but I've played several of the spinoffs, Hyrule Warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors, Pirate Warriors 4, and Warriors Orochi 3. (Btw, as far as I'm aware none of these games have custom characters) Strangely enough, despite constantly hearing how Hyrule Warriors is the best Warriors game ever, I really didn't like it that much. It mainly came down to the boss fights and z-targeting just feeling like they slowed the battle down. But I liked the roster, only additions I'd have liked would be Ashei and Groose. I actually liked Fire Emblem Warriors gameplay a lot more. Yes, a lot of the characters were almost complete moveset clones but the gameplay is built around that. Also, it's Fire Emblem, as somebody who played most of those games, moveset clones aren't unheard of. The only thing I will say is that as a fan of Fire Emblem, the roster sucks. It was mostly the first game, Awakening and Fates. (If you're unfamiliar with Fire Emblem, the biggest problem is that these three games individually have tons of characters, but diving them up means most of the fan favorites from a single game won't be in it. Had they just focused on one game, the roster probably would have been received better.) I haven't played either of the sequels to Hyrule or Fire Emblem Warriors yet. Warriors Orochi 3 has characters from Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors, but I'll be honest, I played as Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden, Sophitia from Soul Calibur, and whoever I needed to be a third character (you deploy in teams of three btw) so I really have no idea how it treats the source material. As for Pirate Warriors, the question really boils down to: do you like One Piece in addition to Warriors gameplay? It's really that simple a question. Anyway, sorry if this was rambly, I just was trying to establish a baseline for myself, but it covered 4 games. Let me know if any of these sound interesting .
I ran across one hell of a custom vagabond unit in this game. Whoever designed them gave ALL of them the invincibility Stratagem. I swear to God, it was brutal to fight them on Chaos difficulty.
I love three kingdom series, dw 8 empires has great political play but sorry samurai warriors 4 empires are far better in gameplay. Its has troops that following you and the general really helpfull in taking a base while dynasty warriors always make me feels like " I am alone in this battlefield "

I was so confused not having a group of soldiers with me that really sucks the game would be so much better with them.
