  • Russia’s war on Ukraine has heavily impacted the world’s energy markets and catalysed new developments in alternative energy sources within an uncertain geopolitical landscape. As Europe attempts to cut its dependencies on Russian fossil fuels, what are the old continent’s realistic alternatives to procure its energy needs? What will be the political costs of pursuing those pathways, and how are high energy costs currently affecting politics across the West? While Russia pivots towards Africa and Asia to nurture new partnerships and seeking customers for its energy resources, what will be the implications of this shifting world order?
Join us for a discussion with Helen Thompson, Professor of Political Economy at Cambridge University and author of the recent book Disorder: Hard Times in the 21st Century, published by Oxford University Press.

What a weath of insight! Regerettably, the audio-levels are so low that I could almost not understand a word of what Prof. Thompson said in the Q&A. Any chance, you can up the audio levels considerably and upload the video again?

How much was NATO’s drive towards the Caspian Sea really about energy? Ukraine alone has the second largest energy reserve in Europe behind Norway; but Caspian Sea and its surrounding countries is the holy grail for oil companies.

“In any system of energy, Control is what consumes energy the most.
No energy store holds enough energy to extract an amount of energy equal to the total energy it stores.
No system of energy can deliver sum useful energy in excess of the total energy put into constructing it.
This universal truth applies to all systems.
Energy, like time, flows from past to future” (2017).
