People seem so friendly there! That guy had no clue who you were but just invited you in to his house, gave you some smoked fish, didn't expect anything in return, and wanted you to come back for dinner. I love it.
One of the most humbling moments of my life was going to a tiny village deep in the jungle, where people had barely enought to eat -and yet they would lean out their windows, offer me food, invite me to stay with them that night. (I was with friends who were also natives, but still, overwhemlingly kind to a stranger) At night I woke up needing a loo, didn't know where I was, and a teenager had been asigned to watch me all night in case I needed anything and help me - and they sprung to life and did exactly that. I'm a pretty hard salty bloke, but that really nearly brought me to tears when I talked to my friends "Well of course, you're not familiar here, so they know you will need help!" To me it shows that if we could let go of politics, flag waving, and imaginary sky daddies - there is a lot of human kindness out there we should really be focusing on instead of the things we do.

@lakeboy1908 and just to add an extra helping of irony to his comment… most of the people in the “jungle” he’s referring to believe in a God. If you look up the word irony in the dictionary his comment shows up.

well dominica does attract tourist...but while other places promote parties and crowdedness and heavy tourist, Dominica focuses on nature, cleanliness quietness. Total opposite of what most people in the world chase after. If you looking to party all night. Dominica isnt the place for you.

If you get a chance, go to Guadeloupe, just north of Dominica. Something about these islands is really amazing, authentic. I’m stuck now under the - let’s say - burden of circumstances but given the chance, I would go back in a heartbeat.
Despite a low standard of living, descent lodging and restaurants (when you can find one) are expensive. With two main towns to choose from, there’s surprisingly little to appeal to tourists,with the exception of eco-centric activities like hiking.
Dominica got hit by hurricane Maria in 2017 and destroyed everything. I was in medical school at the time there!
Do you have any plans to come to Brazil? You should definitely visit Rio de Janeiro. If you ever find yourself here in Brazil, you should also check out the northeast region (Recife, specifically). Extremely affordable, gorgeous city full of culture, nature, beautiful beaches and rivers.

A lot of affluent Americans from bigger cities like to come into smaller cities and foreign countries and talk trash about the town and people there straight out of the airport. There's a reason a lot of foreigners tell me right off the back they hate Americans. I'm brown so I feel like they're a lot more comfortable telling me that. They're white. Not all, but many. It seems to me on this island people don’t talk, instead, they work. so it’s not like Jamaica in a linguistic way of thinking. The work ethic here is a lot better than in Jamaica or other similar places.
