    Ran every trail on Uwharrie a dozen times or more...even Daniel. Mostly in my FJ60, FJC, or LX470. Great fun heading up there with some friends, camping, sharing a meal and beverages, and wheeling. Fav time was early December right before trails closed. No bugs, no snakes, no crowds and if lucky some snow flurries. Every year it was always a little different depending on erosion, hard use, trail repairs, etc. I need to go back soon....and get me some more of that fried bologna sandwiches at the Outpost!! ;)

    Great video! Just went this morning. Dickey Bell was a little rockier than when we went last year, but we made it with a little seesawing at the bottom of the rocky feature. either way, lots of fun!
    oh, forgot to mention- we went through Dickey Bell in the opposite direction. my mom’s jeep can make it through Dickey Bell without any lift kit or different tires. she has a Sahara Unlimited with stock everything, but has smacked the piece mounting the driver’s front control arm pretty good.

    When I was stationed in NC I’d take my JK every weekend out there. I had minimal modifications and didn’t really have much trouble traversing the obstacles. Had a BLAST! At the time I had a 08 two door JK rubicon, 35 inch tires, 2 inch lift, LOD bumpers with front stinger, warn power plant winch and ARB diff covers. That stinger saved me one time going down a ledge lol. I’d say if you are planning crawling at least invest in some differential covers/armor. I’ve seen a lot of guys come off a ledge or rock and just BAM!, slam their diff right into a rock. Those stock diff covers can be pretty thin and that’s fairly unhealthy to be taking rocks directly to your drive train.

    I was really enjoying this video until the rollover recovery. Why did you guys drag his Jeep down the trail? It would have been easier to snatch block ti from the tree on the left to tip it back onto it's wheels and then let some line out as he backed the jeep down the trail to where it was level. Minimal damage to the Jeep and clears the trail quicker. Other than the recovery, this was a very good video. I have not been to N.C. to wheel yet and I am glad that I watched this video first. I am looking forward to hitting this area the next time that I am on the east coast.

    • @TarheelOverland
      @TarheelOverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Todd! Thanks for your feedback!
      There was no way to flip the Jeep back upright where it was, the walls of dirt prevented that. I do think we possibly could have flipped it back over once we dragged it back out of that section, but the owner wanted to pull it all the way back to the switchback before setting it upright, so that’s what we did. It’s a tricky part of the trail for recovery, as usual video doesn’t do it justice. Uwharrie is a fun place to wheel and I hope it stays open for many years to come.

    • @MrMrsregor
      @MrMrsregor ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes. like todd said; use a winch and snatch block to roll it back over. it will still be at an awkward angle and want to flop back onto its side if you take the winch off (so dont let tension off of the winch) leave it hooked up and holding jeep leaning up against the the wall with its tires on the ground and hold it there with the winch. then while it is still hooked up to keep it from flopping back over again, then winch it backwards or roll it backwards down the hill until it is on level ground

    Uwharrie is great. I've been more times than I can count. A stock Wrangler can make it through 90% of the place with careful line picking. My only suggestion for those new to off-roading is to not go during or right after rain. Give it a few days to dry out. It gets very slick when it's wet and turns even the easy trails in to a slick difficult mess.

    • @TarheelOverland
      @TarheelOverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great advice! The difficulty level goes up significantly when it’s wet. A short thunderstorm came through just before we hit Daniel in this video, which made the first half of the trail and ledge pretty slick.

    The left line you took on Dickey Bell is an illegal bypass. Multiple attempts have been made to fence it off but people keep ripping the guard rails down anytime they are put up. There is a rumor that Dickey Bell is going to be closed because of it. Since you took the line I am assuming you didn't know, so I'm informing you. A stock vehicle can easily do the farthest right line.

    • @TarheelOverland
      @TarheelOverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Once I replace my stock 245/70s with 33s I’m hoping to do some mild off roading (I bought it more for towing and hauling). Do you think a stock Jeep (Gladiator) on 33s with no lift could make it?

      @TarheelOverland  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the 2” Mopar lift. You would be fine at Uwharrie with 33’s on the easier trails. The rule of thumb is all the harder trails start with a “D” - Daniel, Dutch John, Dickey Bell. You probably want to avoid those.

    I'm about to take my first trip to uwharrie, I am a seasoned wheeler with a CJ7, v8, rear locker and 35s. What trails do you recommend and where do you typically camp?

    • @TarheelOverland
      @TarheelOverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should be able to do any trail at URE with your setup, just depends on your comfort level. Daniel is the highest risk trail for rollover or body damage. Dutch John is second riskiest in my opinion (just because of the hill climb where the Jeep flopped in my video). I’d suggest starting easier trails like wolf den/slab pile/saw mill/rocky mtn loop/falls dam then dicky bell. If you want more challenge after that, try Dutch John and Daniel.
      Running any of them at night adds some extra challenge. You could be like me and lose track of where you’re going and get stuck trying to squeeze between the trees to get back on the trail 😂.
      You can disperse camp anywhere along the trails. There are a number of obvious camping spots, especially at the entrances or exits. I wouldn’t suggest camping next to the main roads because of noise and dust. Uwharrie Hunt Camp is nice and it’s really convenient to the Outpost. Arrowhead is also nice and has more amenities (reservation only if I remember correctly).
      Hope this helps!

      @TarheelOverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The harder trails start with a ‘D’ (Dutch John, Dickey Bell, Daniel). I like to start over on Wolf Den and then to Falls Dam and Dickey Bell. From there you can do Rocky Mountain Loop, go down Dutch John, or head over to Daniel if you want a more challenging trail. Grab a map from the outpost when you get your day pass.
      If you are camping, you can disperse camp in the forest for free. There are a lot of spots off the main roads or (preferably) a couple hundred yards down most any of the trails. The entrance of Falls Dam has a lot of room and the Art Lilley campground is there also.
      Most big groups seem to meet up at the Outpost at around 9am on the weekends, so if you want to see some cool rigs or if you’re maybe looking to join up with someone, head over to the outpost and grab a biscuit while you’re there.
      Edited to add: URE trails aren’t particularly difficult, so many people are pretty nonchalant about preparations and/or don’t expect anything bad to happen. Don’t be that person. Take some tools and recovery gear, extra food and water, and don’t hesitate to stop and scope out any obstacles on foot before you attempt them.
