Great showcase. I just purchased a 2002 m5 with 90k miles having it transported from Michigan to El Paso. Looking forward to seeing all your future videos.
The BMW E39 M5 is and will always be my ultimate Dream Car. Ive owned 3 E39's with my current one being a 540I 6MT. One day I'll sell some vehicles and buy a prestine E39 if I can find one. Cost of ownership is too high for me right now (I own 6 cars currently), but if I reduce the stable, I can make it work. One day! Unless my wife makes me buy a C7 Corvette instead (Im sure a test drive will kill that sentiment once she has to get in and out of it.
@@mthusiast2746 yep still got it. I just did the valve cover gasket last week. You know these cars they just can’t seem to keep the fluids internal. I remember yours well. it’s an extremely clean example. Are you still local to Pittsburgh?
Subscribed! Found you through searching for m5 videos. I've always wanted to own one. I've got a 2019 S4 that's pretty great. But i've got the e39 M5 itch.
The start up noise most likey is because the vanos accumulators in the older models are not great compared to the newer models that supply pressurized oil way better. I heard it does no damage at all. But will have a almost rattle noise at start up. Some people retrofit them to get rid of this noise.
I sold mine recently, now in an S3 with mods. I always felt like the e39 M5 was a "bounder," like a golden retriever or lab. Get it on the highway and it is clearly in its element, like a dog on a beach. I could drive it comfortably at 110-115. The S3, I feel comfortable around 100. I think it's the wheelbase difference. So funny that you've come 'round again to the car. Not surprising, though, it's one the best ever made.
You got my attention when you said you changed your mind and went with new euro headlights. I feel we share the same level of ocd. Where did you source the headlights from. I think I want to go new. Thanks in advance.
I have the same wind noise.. I think it's part of the door seals/mouldings on the quarter glass. Really annoying right?!?! Is the "fan noise" when it's cold only?
Love these videos. Your synopsis of owning an E39 M5 is spot on, especially from a maintenance perspective.
Nice ride along. I liked the split screen view, because I like backroads. The speed increase on the curve is my joyfull moment as well.

The sound you’re hearing at startup could be the secondary air injection pump

If your ever near Pittsburgh you can drive my 03 with a muffler delete so you can get a perspective on the sound.
Glad to hear that you still have yours!
I met you years ago in Pittsburgh. I’ve got an 00
Avus.

I have an 99 model of the E39 M5, and it also sounds kind a diesel, so I guess it’s a thing with those pre-facelift models
The electronic Vanos accumulator was a change after model year 2000 in the USA.
I miss my m5
having the same sound on start up actually
Interesting, maybe it’s normal for these cars.
