  • Replacing the inlet valve and valve seat in an IR 231G impact wrench. The valve and seat were worn & damaged to the point the wrench wouldn't stop completely when the trigger was released - it would continue to run, slowly, until I disconnected the air. This may have been caused by habitually running the tool at higher than the recommended 90psi max. There are other videos showing a more in-depth tune-up - ‪@FordTechMakuloco‬ has a good one - but I could not find one showing how to replace the valve and seat. Enjoy!

The hardest part was removing the old valve seat. The pick did eventually get it out. I installed the new valve seat with a 7/16" deep 1/4" socket and a 1/4" socket driver handle. The old IR 231G impact wrench works like new again. Thank you for posting this video!

I wondered about getting the old valve seat out myself. Using the pick to get at it, didn't seem to work after a few tries. I slid off the rubber handle grip. I put the gun in a bench vice and heated the handle with a propane torch. While I did that I put a smaller-tipped, long screw driver into the handle and wiggled it around. The valve seat just fell out onto the floor with the softened rubber. It wasn't melted, but soft enough to let gravity release it to the ground. :)

I wouldn't go that route as my first resort - melted rubber from accidentally heating it too hot sounds like a dreadful job to clean up - but if nothing else is working, sure, why not, any port in a storm. Expanding that chamber even a few thousandths might be enough to get it moving with a pick.

How did you ultimately get the valve seat removed? Mine seems unwilling to move. TIA

I got an angled hook down between the body of the tool and the outside of the seal - between the seal and the wall of the chamber it sits in - and then turned the hook so it was under the seal, and pulled. The hook would slip out, but the seal moved a little each time - try try again and it eventually came out.

There's probably a better way but that's what I came up with.
