Join Anna and Alf in this video as they visit what has been VOTED the WORLDS MOST CAPTIVATING UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE ~ PONTCYSYLLTE AQUEDUCT AND CANAL at LLANGOLLEN in NORTH WALES, and walk the length of it and back again, as Anna teaches some history and shows us some tools that were used to build it .
THE PONTCYSYLLTE AQUEDUCT and CANAL in 2009 was inscribed as a WORLD HERITAGE SITE by UNESCO and is known as THE WORLDS MOST CAPTIVATING SITE as it recognised its innovative and engineering significance for the historical development of British waterways. And UNESCO has described this as " A masterpiece of creative genius "
It was built by THOMAS TELFORD and is the HIGHEST CANAL AQUEDUCT IN THE WORLD and the LONGEST IN GREAT BRITAIN.
THE STRUCTURE is also a GRADE 1 LISTED BUILDING and the whole length of the site has also been designated as a SCHEDULED ANCIENT MONUMENT OF NATIONAL IMPORTANCE and AN AREA OF OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY. It is a navigable Aqueduct that carries the Llangollen Canal across The River Dee into The Vale of Llangollen in North Wales.
Also in this video Anna and Alf briefly visit other parts of the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE - THE LLANGOLLEN WHARF to see the HORSE DRAWN BOATS, and then to take a short peak in at the WORLD FAMOUS LLANGOLLEN INTERNATIONAL MUSICAL EISTEDDFOD where people from countries from all over the world compete in competitions ( This has been a big part of Anna and Alf and their children's lives ) and then to see part of the HORSESHOE FALLS and RIVER DEE.

Really interesting Anna, so good to see the canal still in use. Even here in NZ the name Thomas Telford is familiar to those of us who spent their careers in roading👍 How do the barges know whose turn it is to use the bridge ?

Pontcysyllte is a river in the sky. I do admire the engineering wonder of the aqueduct. Fascinating that you can walk next to it. It is high. Tall and long... I don't think I have ever seen an aqueduct bridge before. See why it became UNESCO site. The canal boats amaze me and seems very unique. Horseshoe falls is awesome as is the village. The aqueduct is really an engineering marvel. Telford was a genius. His road building through North Wales is a wonderful achievement. We have walked here but not ridden across in a canal boat. As you say it is a stunning sight, an amazing place.

Such a great place, great job on explaining about the canal and it was fun seeing Alf walk up there too. The boats looked fun and what a view from up there. I like the info boards they have. Hello my friend Anna😊 Today I come to see the bridge with you. It is a high bridge and it is special that it has an aqueduct.It's on a bridge which is very long and I really like this bridge because it offers a beautiful view over a wide area. I admire the engineer who designed and built the bridge over a hundred years ago. He was very talented. He calculated it and it was strong and able to carry water and store it high on the bridge like an aqueduct to the other side of the bridge. I think the bridge designers were creative and it was a miracle. He calculated that it was strong enough to carry water and store it high on the bridge like a drainage pipe to the other side of the bridge. I visited here a few years ago and absolutely adored the whole place. The engineering marvel of the aqueduct is the star but the canal and surrounding countryside is just phenomenal.

Its pretty cool to see the highest aqueduct in the world! And quite some pretty views from there over the mountains and river! Looks fun to go in a boat exploring it by kayak! Oooh, now I do have fond memories of Llangollen but haven't been on that stunningly amazing bridge. Must have been quite strange walking along that canal up so high. You hit the nail on the description " Fascinating" . Amazing. Love the canal boats. Beautiful horses. That river too is gorgeous. Thank you for showing me more of Llangollen- we only got to fascinating house of the Ladies of Llangollen. It was all we had time for. The construction and history of this Canal is awesome. The scenery is beautiful with all the greenery/trees, etc. The highest is so cool, I would be nervous being up so high, I give you a thumbs up 👍. Another wonderful tour! J&M

Ever since I see some photos online of some people swimming the aqueduct Anna I've wanted to get up there and swim across. It's a dream! I have to agree it is an engineering marvel. I mean imagine the math's involved. They had a brain. We visited the site of the festival in 2013 and had a great time in Llangollen. I so look forward t visiting again. OMG and they only have those hand held tools to build such a masterpiece of an aqueduct no wonder it took years to finish. Definitely a genius and his name will live for a very long time. Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece of history. I just pretend I was in one of the boats looking down.

Awesome to see and learn about the canals. Wow, they are so neat and so tall. Amazing engineering. The views from up above were fantastic at several viewpoints, over the river, and other areas. I'll bet being as high as they are you get a little spooked next to the railing. Looks like the water is mostly level and does not flow in either direction. Awesome tour of the area. Beautiful and interesting. Have a wonderful day.
Aww thanks Steve I'm happy you enjoyed it . Its an amazing piece of structure. I was fine next to the railings but then I'm used to rock climbing and abseiling so it's no problem to me but others were a bit spooked and turned back after a few steps :) It's in a great area too.
