That's actually a good question. She was surprised they use a camera at all... And they probably don't. It certainly wouldn't just be one. They likely don't because those tags are likely RFID being scanned by a receiver. That's not optical.
Multi-touch devices primarily use 1 of 5 different technologies (Resistive, Surface Capacitive, Projected Capacitive, Surface Acoustic Wave or Infrared). This is a multi-touch table and screen right? It would be logical to assume it would use similar technology and steer clear of an optical camera.

I've seen a couple of these projects where they actually do use cameras and IR. That said, I have no idea how they've done it in this case.

What if you put a some cocaine on that table or some weed, would it tell you where it's from, who the farmer is and the boss, the dealer, transporter, buyer ect???
