Update: I had to say farewell to him today, but we’re making plans for me to be the one to visit his country and family in the future, once I have a job that makes travelling abroad easier! I’m sad, but hopeful :’) And also, he definitely wasn’t a serial killer (yet). Bonus!
This guy threatened me online in a video game. He told me to give him my address so he could come beat me up. I told him the city and gave him my phone number and told him to call me when he got into town. That way he couldnt wuss out and say that he showed up but I wasnt home. He called me a few moments later to confirm the number was real. We had a good conversation. We met up later that week. It was fun.

okay so here's my story dated a guy long distance for 3 years without ever having met in person (he lived in the UK, I lived in the US) extreme long distance but we made it work, finally he comes out to visit me in person and... it went fantastic, dreamy like even and we're still together coming up on 4 years now : D

Not a online friend but more , ”started out as friends and ended up having feelings for eachother” thing . Welp , we had been talking for 5 years and 1 1/2 romanticly . We agreed to finally meet as he had just started his education an hour away from my town - in my country (he was from Holland) . Im waiting at the train station and I see him starting to walk up to me , looking up from his phone and we making eye contact . Then , he makes a ”Ugh no” kinda face and just turns around - just when I was about to walk up to him . I just stood there all confused and wondering if it wasnt him , then realizing No I was talking to him on his way there . So he probably saw me from a distance and then read what I sent , walked up to me and when close - figured I wasnt good looking up close and just bolted outta there . Later that day I just wanted an answer and asked him about it , ”You looked different and sorry but youre not my type” . Sure I was heartbroken and felt like shit , but Im happy he sorted himself out of my life for me . Really want those 5 years back though . (We knew what we looked like btw)

Thank you all for the nice comments , This happend in August last year and I don’t really think about it too much anymore but It did set me back with my confidence again (childhood bullying sucks) and Ive just learned to take everything with a grain of salt . Sure it was absolutely horrible at the time and thinking about it makes me mad , but Im glad that he atleast did it *BEFORE* a relationship had molded . That wouldve been a bigger hit to the gut I think , so really - Im just glad he got rid of himself for me 👏🏻

I had a similar "horror" story with a guy I met online. So, I was in a big group chat, and it was with a bunch of people who plays games in Oklahoma and Texas. I wasn't super close with a lot of them, nothing more than like calls on discord while we played. Well eventually this guy invites me to a gun show outside of Dallas and it's mid summer, and I wanted to take a drive for the day, so I headed over the 4 hour drive to Dallas. Something to note about this guy is that he was a bit too personal and talked about hugging people a lot (guy had no disabilities, was just kinda touchy). Well, I get there, and he immediately hugs me (I don't really mind, I knew it was coming) but that's not the horror part. He also knew my boyfriend (long distance, been together for years tho), and during the gun show, my phone had died. He took this opportunity to message my boyfriend saying that I was leaving him, and would rather spend the day with him. Me having no clue about this, I continued to hang out for the day. Eventually I get back to my car after a few hours to find that my boyfriend had blocked me, and I had no clue why. I didn't think too much of it, as it could have been a misclick or a friend of his messing with him. I get home after the 4 hour drive to see a ton of messages my boyfriend had left me about the guy. I immediately confronted him about my boyfriend, and the guy tried to comfort me saying if I was upset I could drive back and stay at his place so I wouldn't have to be alone. Blocked him pretty quick, and found a way to explain it to my boyfriend. Boyfriend messaged him again to see if it was true, blocked the guy, and we spent the next day talking about how horrible that was. The guy still wants to date me and will make me feel guilty about "leaving him". 2/10 experience: I got a sweet medieval flail at the gun show that I have hanging on my wall, so the trip wasn't a waste.
Not a horror story but, I was playing fortnite ( I don’t anymore) and I met this like 13-14 year old kid (Well he sounded like it I’m 10) and we got along Fast forward a 2 weeks and I go to aqua fans in Italy and there was a 2018 festival I went to the puppet show, because why not And there was this tall blonde kid at the back (important later) So when I got back from Italy I asked him “Did you go to the aqua fans 2018 festival” he’s Italian by the way “Yeah” “Did you go to the puppet show” “Yeah why” “Are you tall and blonde” “Yes” And I said “I met you” That is how I met my online friend (By accident)

I met my boyfriend on World of Warcraft. I had joined the guild he was in and there was a large world pvp battle going on between the servers largest rival faction guilds. I asked in chat "who wants to go duck the Alliance up with me?". We became fast friends from that point on and continued to be for many years before we got together romantically. We have been a couple for two and a half years now and I can't imagine life without him :) He is my very best friend. Meeting him in person for the first time was a wonderful experience, I was nervous at first, but we had talked openly about it and how we would meet and it was like it always had been between us. Don't be afraid to meet your friends, just be careful and have a backup plan in case things do go south!

I have a story about being the awkward one. I met up with a girl from some dating site and I was 3 months into a job that I absolutely loved, I didn't stop talking about work and workmates. Diverting anything she was talking about into story about worklife. Mind you, this was the first 'date'. Looking back, I could only imagine what she was thinking. I like to think I have self-awareness and understand social cues but oh my god that poor girl. The date lasted about an hour, the second she finished her drink she checks her phone and says she has to leave. I texted her saying 'stay safe heading home' or something, no response. We never spoke again. Big awkwards

I have an online friend that I consider the best friend I've ever had. Known him for around 2-3 years, we talk every single day and typically get in a 2-4 hour call once or more a week, it's amazing. We've even planned to move in together when he can make it to Canada (He lives in the US) we've planned out practically everything, even if it won't be for another few years. I honestly cannot wait to meet him in person for the first time, we've even discussed one of us simply taking a plane over to be able to visit for a while before he's able to move even though it's unlikely and will most likely be meeting when he moves instead
My online friend lived an hour away from me. We had met in real life, but the majority of our conversations were online. The second time I got to see him was in a hospital because he had attempted suicide.
On a more positive note, I had been Instagram friends with a fellow young artist for over three years. We ended up as roommates at the same summer school!! I had flown across the planet to go and she had come from the other end of the state - what a small world we live in. She’s one of the most wonderful, kindhearted people I’ve ever met :)

This isn't a horror story, but it was really cool. My husband and I had a friend we'd met online. When we announced the date for our wedding, our friend said he'd bring his girlfriend, and they'd come down. The first time we met in person was mine and my husband's wedding day.
Pretty much the same deal here. One of my friends is getting married later this year and he invited the main group of friends (8+) and their families to the wedding. A portion of the main group have already met twice over the years. But I think the wedding is going to be the first one I go to? I missed the meetup that was scheduled just a week ago bc of money. Met my best mate on MW2 10 years ago. We live on opposite sides of the country and I’m poor, so I can’t really afford to buy a plane ticket and take time off work to see him, but I did once. When we first met it was during the “clown” thing in 2016 so on the first day, within hours of me meeting this man, he proposes we should go clown hunting in the empty woods and I should walk in front. I was a bit suspicious, but I trusted him. We just ended up exploring the woods a bit. After that we spent the week hanging out, partying, and getting wasted. He’s still my best friend even though we’ve only met once. We game together all the time and I’ve now gamed with a lot of his real life friends. They’re all chill and very accepting of me, and have all offered to chip in a bit to get me to fly back over for another visit.

Also not a Horrorstory: When i was like 13 years old i watched many let's play's and stuff. And there was this youtuber i'd watch very often and i kinda had a crush on him. One day he stopped uploading. Every now and then i would check if he uploaded something. He wouldn't upload anything for years. A bit more than a year ago i broke up with my ex who used to manipulate me and also was mentally unstable. Not long after that i got very ill, couldn't leave my bed, had fevers and lost much weight. I didn't go school anymore. I went to so many doctors and nobody knew what was wrong. My Parents told me i was just simulating and needed a psychologist. Until one day after a certain blood test, i was finally diagnosed with EBV and chronic Lyme disease. Everything changed after that day, and I spent much time at home alone. At one point, i didn't want to live anymore, because the disease had taken away so much from me. I remember one day, i was thinking of that youtuber again i watched as a kid. I looked up his page and found out he was now streaming on twitch. I was really happy and started watching him again. He'd sometimes play with his viewers and that's how we met. After that we talked almost every day and it really made me feel better and when i spent time with him, i forgot the disease and everything negative. A few months later, my parents were planning to do a city trip and it happened to be the city he lived in. So we finally met in person and got together shortly after that. It's been more than a year since that day and I am enjoying my life again. He is the most loving and caring person i know and I'm glad I found him again after all that time. Sorry if there where any mistakes, english is not my first language.

Okay so here's a happy story: Six months ago i put a poll on my Instagram story asking who wants to join an lgbtq+ groupchat where we could spam gay memes and talk etc. This one girl i've never talked to before wants to join, and so i add her to the group. She turned out to be simply amazing and cheerful, and wasn't faking depression like most of the people i've met on the internet in the past. She was genuine, kind, sweet and always thought about others and never offended anyone. We started talking outside the groupchat, and i eventually developed a crush on her. After three months, i told her i liked her, and just when i was ready to jump out a window because of what i had done, she said that she liked me too. We then started dating, and video chatted a lot. Then, she said that she was coming into my town with her sister and her sister's friend. It was fourth of July, the day stranger things third season came out, and Americans were celebrating their independence. Good day. I woke up at 5:34 because i was so excited. When i finally saw her standing at the train station, and she sees me, we can't help but run to hug eachother. best hug ever. We spent ten hours in total just talking and also hugging a lot. Literally three seconds after she left, i broke down crying. She also cried. We both cried, in different locations. That day and her amazing company keeps me alive when my anxiety is stabbing me. She's simply amazing, and i love her more than anything.

I was friends with this girl for years. Not in any kind of romantic way (at least on my end), and eventually after some really horrid life experiences, I decided to move to where she lived, literally across the country. She was moving out of her place into a new apartment with another person, who I had become friends with. So, I made plans, got my plane ticket, and moved down. Less than a month later, the new friend and I move out because my old friend turned out to be a paranoid schizophrenic, who had lied to me so much that Im genuinely uncertain if we had ever spoken without her lying about something. She threatened to kill me in several ways, and when we moved out, tried to get us to move back in by threatening to call the police and accuse us of theft of her things. Thankfully, she didnt do that, and we havent spoken in a long time. Part of me really hopes that she got the help she needed, because she had these moments of genuine goodness, but her mental health was so bad that it just destroyed her life around her. I ended up marrying the new friend, and have been happily married for 5 years.

I starting chatting to this guy on a Facebook group after realising we had the same taste in music. I was 16 at the time and he was a year older. We chatted on messager for about a week, then moved on to Skype. We video-chatted for the best part of a year and there were no problems. We both stated early on that we liked each other and talked about jobs, university and family life. I knew his mother was on benefits because she couldn’t walk very well and he had two cats. I’m not a cat person but I said I liked them. After about 18 months he asked if it was okay to meet and I said yes. The day arrived and he hopped off the train and immediately I knew it wasn’t going to work out. All he wore were band t-shirts and ratty jeans, even though I told him we were going to a fancy restaurant that night, and most of all he smelled of cat pee. Like, overwhelmingly. And it was after talking to him in person it was apparent that he didn’t seem very motivated to do anything, he just wanted to lay in bed with me and watch movies. I managed to get through the next three days and as soon as he was on the train home I broke up with him. Older me always regrets not waiting until he got home to do this but I didn’t want to lead him on. We’re still friends on Facebook and he seems to be doing okay.
Good wholesome internet friend story to balance this: I got in a big car accident & nearly died and my mum told everyone in my contacts, including my friend that lived a 12 hour drive away. He thought maybe I was a catfish and trying to end things dramatically but he gave me the benefit of the doubt and drove all the way down to visit me in hospital. We’re still close 4 years later!
Back in the early (ish) days on IMVU I had a few good friends that I'd rp with and one of them was really close to me. We stuck together for years and talked every time we logged in but it wasn't until I finished secondary school (aged 16) that he started hinting about meeting up. He had told me he lived in the Netherlands and I lived in England so I said there wasn't really no way that we could meet (I'm scared of flying, I get travel sick on long journeys and I was a 16 y/o about to go into college with hardly any money.) He seemed to relent and we kept talking but he started digging for information and me, being a naive idiot, told him the shire the town I lived in was located in. I was in my first year of college and came home to be told that a man with a moteorcycle and a beard had asked if her daughter was in when my Mum had answered the door (my friend was always bragging about riding motorbikes.) My Mum asked which one (I have two sisters) and that threw the man off track causing him to leave. My Mum said he looked like he was in his late forties. I logged on to talk to my friend (not thinking it had been him) and he wouldn't answer me and stopped talking to me altogether over the following months. I found out through mutual friends that he'd told them he'd travelled to see me but that I was an older woman and after that he'd started talking to a new girl - I'm not sure how old she was. What gets me is if he was in his late forties when I was in my first year of college (16 y/o) I would have been around twelve when we started talking and though he never asked for pictures he did talk suggestively to me and he also told everyone he was the same age as me. I dread to think what would have happened if I'd been home.

Eventually, i found out my best friend was using a voice changer that actually sounded like a male to trick me; we stopped being friends.

I was online and skimming profiles on this site (you could heavily customize it and it wasn't social media). Saw this cake from Portal and left a comment saying I loved that game and a joke about flirting with cake cos he'd put hearts as a border to the picture. This turned into a conversation and, eventually, a relationship. We sent pics, he looks like a serial killer in his and I looked fat in mine (still do). We met six months later. He was chubbier than I first thought, is chubbier still now! (It's cute. It's my bear belly. :3) We've been together ten years and I remember the day we physically met perfectly because it means a lot. So there you go, my one meeting. A nice story instead of horror. Met two peeps on Don’t Starve like a year ago. One of them just kinda left, but the other I still talk to to this day. Very sweet person who always manages to cheer me up. We never really plan on meeting, but even so, they are one of the coolest people I’ve met online. Not about meeting them, but I just wanted to add this in to the other good/bad stories.
One time I met some of my online friends at a concert for our favorite band. When I saw them and they saw me, we ran full force to each other and hugged. The concert was awesome, and I still stay in touch and hang out with them sometimes since we live in the same state.
I actually have one of these horror stories: My little sister's dad. My mom met him on World of Warcraft and he moved in with us. Not long after my mom gave birth to my little sister (their child), she discovered DvDs with child porn and pictures of him crossdressing. I didn't understand why they were breaking up at the time because I was 8 years old, but we moved away and I never saw him again. We probably dodged a lot of bullets with that guy. On the flip side of things, I've been dating a guy I met 6 years ago on Minecraft and we've been together happily for almost a year. The internet is weird
i met a guy of the same age online when we were both in middle school. he lived across the country. around 5 years into friendship, we were 17, he flew up to visit and stayed at my house with my family, and it was fine. we had fun, played video games together, and surprised another person who was my IRL friend who knew him, too. he fell asleep almost immediately after we settled in at my place, from jetlag, and she drew obscenities on his face; it was that kind of fun weekend. fast-forward, about 4 or 5 years later we had drifted apart a bit but he hmu to lmk he was coming up to my area for work in a few months and wanted to see if we could meet up again. this time, i had an apartment with some friends, although i was struggling with money a bit. i checked in with the roomies about it and told him it sounded fine. a week before he came up, he messaged me to talk about the trip that he's leaving for soon. and then, strangely, he started calling himself names ("i'm such an asshole, seriously, i'm the worst, etc.") i was like, "Why? What's going on?" and, basically, he told me he wanted to pay me money to have sex with him. he knew i was a lesbian, he was one of the first people to know after i figured that out in early high school, and he'd supported me through it. stunned and internally disgusted, i politely declined and told him it was fine, and he accepted that, but then he asked for pictures for money instead. gave me a $ rate per pic and everything. i was horrified at this point, i said no, and he kept asking, saying he'd just "always wondered what i looked like." that honestly made it feel like i never knew the guy. he always had these intentions. a day before he started his trip to my state, i told him i had a family emergency and wouldn't be home to hang out. after that conversation, i removed and blocked him on all social media. he never tried to contact me again. /shrug
I've had an online friend for a little over a year now. She's been with me through everything and knows all about me, and I know a lot about her. But we live on opposite sides of the country. Its sucks, and I have this massive fear that if I say I want to meet she will ghost me or something. However, she has hinted at it but I'm still rather scared. :(
Finding out the creepy MySpace guy lied about living in the same town gave me such a weird catharsis. I'm gonna start creeping people out and then revealing I live in Luxembourg or something.
Met a friend online after two years of talking and playing games together online, a few group videos calls. She came to pick me and my cat up so we could be roommates together. The only horror part of this story is that we live in Texas.
I had essentially the same exact experience with a person I met on discord, the one at 11:00 or so. Creepy how close it is. Haunts me as a mistake to this day.
A good story about this is this pretty popular group of youtubers you probably have never heard about called the yogscast. They started out as just buddies playing wow together 11 years ago until they started a youtube channel. Started meeting one another and at some point their main channel even became one of the most subscribed channel a long time ago. Now they all work together in an office and even have their own company. Think about that, just a group of online friends that got really popular and now works together in a company they started
I made friends with this dude on mw3 back during the good ol' 360 days. We smoked a few cones at the skate park and his mum somehow found us and made me go back to high school, best art class ever
I have an online friend in America, and I live in New Zealand. We've never met. I accidentally ghosted him for 2 months when I deleted social media for a challenge, and it's been another month and I don't know whether or not I should message him again.

This guy threatened me online in a video game. He told me to give him my address so he could come beat me up. I told him the city and gave him my phone number and told him to call me when he got into town. That way he couldnt wuss out and say that he showed up but I wasnt home. He called me a few moments later to confirm the number was real. We had a good conversation. We met up later that week. It was fun.

Welp , we had been talking for 5 years and 1 1/2 romanticly . We agreed to finally meet as he had just started his education an hour away from my town - in my country (he was from Holland) . Thank you all for the nice comments , This happend in August last year and I don’t really think about it too much anymore but It did set me back with my confidence again (childhood bullying sucks) and Ive just learned to take everything with a grain of salt . Sure it was absolutely horrible at the time and thinking about it makes me mad , but Im glad that he atleast did it *BEFORE* a relationship had molded . That wouldve been a bigger hit to the gut I think , so really - Im just glad he got rid of himself for me 👏🏻

I had a similar "horror" story with a guy I met online.
So, I was in a big group chat, and it was with a bunch of people who plays games in Oklahoma and Texas. I wasn't super close with a lot of them, nothing more than like calls on discord while we played. Well eventually this guy invites me to a gun show outside of Dallas and it's mid summer, and I wanted to take a drive for the day, so I headed over the 4 hour drive to Dallas. Something to note about this guy is that he was a bit too personal and talked about hugging people a lot (guy had no disabilities, was just kinda touchy). Well, I get there, and he immediately hugs me (I don't really mind, I knew it was coming) but that's not the horror part. He also knew my boyfriend (long distance, been together for years tho), and during the gun show, my phone had died. He took this opportunity to message my boyfriend saying that I was leaving him, and would rather spend the day with him. Me having no clue about this, I continued to hang out for the day. Eventually I get back to my car after a few hours to find that my boyfriend had blocked me, and I had no clue why. I didn't think too much of it, as it could have been a misclick or a friend of his messing with him. I get home after the 4 hour drive to see a ton of messages my boyfriend had left me about the guy. I immediately confronted him about my boyfriend, and the guy tried to comfort me saying if I was upset I could drive back and stay at his place so I wouldn't have to be alone. Blocked him pretty quick, and found a way to explain it to my boyfriend. Boyfriend messaged him again to see if it was true, blocked the guy, and we spent the next day talking about how horrible that was. The guy still wants to date me and will make me feel guilty about "leaving him".
2/10 experience: I got a sweet medieval flail at the gun show that I have hanging on my wall, so the trip wasn't a waste.

I met my boyfriend on World of Warcraft. I had joined the guild he was in and there was a large world pvp battle going on between the servers largest rival faction guilds. I asked in chat "who wants to go duck the Alliance up with me?". We became fast friends from that point on and continued to be for many years before we got together romantically. We have been a couple for two and a half years now and I can't imagine life without him :) He is my very best friend. Meeting him in person for the first time was a wonderful experience, I was nervous at first, but we had talked openly about it and how we would meet and it was like it always had been between us.

It's awful that some people are like this but you can also get good experiences out of it. I started talking to a girl in the early days of facebook, we met up a few months later and now we've been together for almost ten years, married for three.
I have a story about being the awkward one. I met up with a girl from some dating site and I was 3 months into a job that I absolutely loved, I didn't stop talking about work and workmates. Diverting anything she was talking about into story about worklife. Mind you, this was the first 'date'.
Looking back, I could only imagine what she was thinking. I like to think I have self-awareness and understand social cues but oh my god that poor girl.
The date lasted about an hour, the second she finished her drink she checks her phone and says she has to leave. I texted her saying 'stay safe heading home' or something, no response. We never spoke again.

I have an online friend that I consider the best friend I've ever had. Known him for around 2-3 years, we talk every single day and typically get in a 2-4 hour call once or more a week, it's amazing. We've even planned to move in together when he can make it to Canada (He lives in the US) we've planned out practically everything, even if it won't be for another few years. I honestly cannot wait to meet him in person for the first time, we've even discussed one of us simply taking a plane over to be able to visit for a while before he's able to move even though it's unlikely and will most likely be meeting when he moves instead
My online friend lived an hour away from me. We had met in real life, but the majority of our conversations were online. The second time I got to see him was in a hospital because he had attempted suicide.
On a more positive note, I had been Instagram friends with a fellow young artist for over three years. We ended up as roommates at the same summer school!! I had flown across the planet to go and she had come from the other end of the state - what a small world we live in. She’s one of the most wonderful, kindhearted people I’ve ever met :)
Here's a tip for dating: if you don't know if that person is too young, just take your age, divide it by two, and then multiply that by two

Met my best mate on MW2 10 years ago. We live on opposite sides of the country and I’m poor, so I can’t really afford to buy a plane ticket and take time off work to see him, but I did once. When we first met it was during the “clown” thing in 2016 so on the first day, within hours of me meeting this man, he proposes we should go clown hunting in the empty woods and I should walk in front. I was a bit suspicious, but I trusted him. We just ended up exploring the woods a bit. After that we spent the week hanging out, partying, and getting wasted. He’s still my best friend even though we’ve only met once. We game together all the time and I’ve now gamed with a lot of his real life friends. They’re all chill and very accepting of me, and have all offered to chip in a bit to get me to fly back over for another visit.

When i was like 13 years old i watched many let's play's and stuff. And there was this youtuber i'd watch very often and i kinda had a crush on him.
One day he stopped uploading. Every now and then i would check if he uploaded something. He wouldn't upload anything for years. A bit more than a year ago i broke up with my ex who used to manipulate me and also was mentally unstable.
Not long after that i got very ill, couldn't leave my bed, had fevers and lost much weight. I didn't go school anymore. I went to so many doctors and nobody knew what was wrong. My Parents told me i was just simulating and needed a psychologist. Until one day after a certain blood test, i was finally diagnosed with EBV and chronic Lyme disease. Everything changed after that day, and I spent much time at home alone. At one point, i didn't want to live anymore, because the disease had taken away so much from me.
I remember one day, i was thinking of that youtuber again i watched as a kid. I looked up his page and found out he was now streaming on twitch. I was really happy and started watching him again. He'd sometimes play with his viewers and that's how we met. After that we talked almost every day and it really made me feel better and when i spent time with him, i forgot the disease and everything negative.
A few months later, my parents were planning to do a city trip and it happened to be the city he lived in.
So we finally met in person and got together shortly after that. It's been more than a year since that day and I am enjoying my life again. He is the most loving and caring person i know and I'm glad I found him again after all that time.

Six months ago i put a poll on my Instagram story asking who wants to join an lgbtq+ groupchat where we could spam gay memes and talk etc. This one girl i've never talked to before wants to join, and so i add her to the group. She turned out to be simply amazing and cheerful, and wasn't faking depression like most of the people i've met on the internet in the past. She was genuine, kind, sweet and always thought about others and never offended anyone. We started talking outside the groupchat, and i eventually developed a crush on her. After three months, i told her i liked her, and just when i was ready to jump out a window because of what i had done, she said that she liked me too. We then started dating, and video chatted a lot. Then, she said that she was coming into my town with her sister and her sister's friend. It was fourth of July, the day stranger things third season came out, and Americans were celebrating their independence. Good day. I woke up at 5:34 because i was so excited. When i finally saw her standing at the train station, and she sees me, we can't help but run to hug eachother. best hug ever. We spent ten hours in total just talking and also hugging a lot. Literally three seconds after she left, i broke down crying. She also cried. We both cried, in different locations. That day and her amazing company keeps me alive when my anxiety is stabbing me. I met someone online, and we became friends. They ended up asking me out after around a year, and a little later we met irl. It all went well and now we’ve been dating for just over six months :D
I was friends with this girl for years. Not in any kind of romantic way (at least on my end), and eventually after some really horrid life experiences, I decided to move to where she lived, literally across the country. She was moving out of her place into a new apartment with another person, who I had become friends with. So, I made plans, got my plane ticket, and moved down.
Less than a month later, the new friend and I move out because my old friend turned out to be a paranoid schizophrenic, who had lied to me so much that Im genuinely uncertain if we had ever spoken without her lying about something. She threatened to kill me in several ways, and when we moved out, tried to get us to move back in by threatening to call the police and accuse us of theft of her things. Thankfully, she didnt do that, and we havent spoken in a long time. Part of me really hopes that she got the help she needed, because she had these moments of genuine goodness, but her mental health was so bad that it just destroyed her life around her. I ended up marrying the new friend, and have been happily married for 5 years.
Man that's rough, but good job scoring a happy marriage out of the deal.

Stories like these are part of the reasons why I'm so cautious about online dating sites and getting too close to people on the internet
I flew from Europe to US to meet a bunch of long time online friends. We had a wonderful time, and we're planning to make the meetup an annual thing. Stay safe, everyone, since that's not always the case.
Most of my experiences, thus far with meeting friends and lovers online, have all been going just fine for me. I have no interesting stories to share on this topic really, just a tip: If you never take the step, you'll never know.
I starting chatting to this guy on a Facebook group after realising we had the same taste in music. I was 16 at the time and he was a year older. We chatted on messager for about a week, then moved on to Skype. We video-chatted for the best part of a year and there were no problems. We both stated early on that we liked each other and talked about jobs, university and family life. I knew his mother was on benefits because she couldn’t walk very well and he had two cats. I’m not a cat person but I said I liked them. After about 18 months he asked if it was okay to meet and I said yes. The day arrived and he hopped off the train and immediately I knew it wasn’t going to work out. All he wore were band t-shirts and ratty jeans, even though I told him we were going to a fancy restaurant that night, and most of all he smelled of cat pee. Like, overwhelmingly. And it was after talking to him in person it was apparent that he didn’t seem very motivated to do anything, he just wanted to lay in bed with me and watch movies. I managed to get through the next three days and as soon as he was on the train home I broke up with him. Older me always regrets not waiting until he got home to do this but I didn’t want to lead him on. We’re still friends on Facebook and he seems to be doing okay.

Good wholesome internet friend story to balance this: I got in a big car accident & nearly died and my mum told everyone in my contacts, including my friend that lived a 12 hour drive away. He thought maybe I was a catfish and trying to end things dramatically but he gave me the benefit of the doubt and drove all the way down to visit me in hospital. We’re still close 4 years later!

Back in the early (ish) days on IMVU I had a few good friends that I'd rp with and one of them was really close to me.
We stuck together for years and talked every time we logged in but it wasn't until I finished secondary school (aged 16) that he started hinting about meeting up.
He had told me he lived in the Netherlands and I lived in England so I said there wasn't really no way that we could meet (I'm scared of flying, I get travel sick on long journeys and I was a 16 y/o about to go into college with hardly any money.)
He seemed to relent and we kept talking but he started digging for information and me, being a naive idiot, told him the shire the town I lived in was located in.
I was in my first year of college and came home to be told that a man with a moteorcycle and a beard had asked if her daughter was in when my Mum had answered the door (my friend was always bragging about riding motorbikes.)
My Mum asked which one (I have two sisters) and that threw the man off track causing him to leave.
My Mum said he looked like he was in his late forties.
I logged on to talk to my friend (not thinking it had been him) and he wouldn't answer me and stopped talking to me altogether over the following months.
I found out through mutual friends that he'd told them he'd travelled to see me but that I was an older woman and after that he'd started talking to a new girl - I'm not sure how old she was.
What gets me is if he was in his late forties when I was in my first year of college (16 y/o) I would have been around twelve when we started talking and though he never asked for pictures he did talk suggestively to me and he also told everyone he was the same age as me.
I dread to think what would have happened if I'd been home.

Eventually, i found out my best friend was using a voice changer that actually sounded like a male to trick me; we stopped being friends.

Not a horror story, just my only time I met someone online cos I feel y'all might like a nice story after all this. I was online and skimming profiles on this site (you could heavily customize it and it wasn't social media). Saw this cake from Portal and left a comment saying I loved that game and a joke about flirting with cake cos he'd put hearts as a border to the picture. This turned into a conversation and, eventually, a relationship. We sent pics, he looks like a serial killer in his and I looked fat in mine (still do). We met six months later. He was chubbier than I first thought, is chubbier still now! (It's cute. It's my bear belly. :3)
We've been together ten years and I remember the day we physically met perfectly because it means a lot. So there you go, my one meeting. A nice story instead of horror. Not looking for likes or anything, just wanna give people a feel good comment to read. ^^
Met two peeps on Don’t Starve like a year ago. One of them just kinda left, but the other I still talk to to this day. Very sweet person who always manages to cheer me up.
We never really plan on meeting, but even so, they are one of the coolest people I’ve met online.

One time I met some of my online friends at a concert for our favorite band. When I saw them and they saw me, we ran full force to each other and hugged. The concert was awesome, and I still stay in touch and hang out with them sometimes since we live in the same state.
I actually have one of these horror stories: My little sister's dad.
My mom met him on World of Warcraft and he moved in with us. Not long after my mom gave birth to my little sister (their child), she discovered DvDs with child porn and pictures of him crossdressing. I didn't understand why they were breaking up at the time because I was 8 years old, but we moved away and I never saw him again.
We probably dodged a lot of bullets with that guy.
On the flip side of things, I've been dating a guy I met 6 years ago on Minecraft and we've been together happily for almost a year.
The internet is weird
i met a guy of the same age online when we were both in middle school. he lived across the country. around 5 years into friendship, we were 17, he flew up to visit and stayed at my house with my family, and it was fine. we had fun, played video games together, and surprised another person who was my IRL friend who knew him, too. he fell asleep almost immediately after we settled in at my place, from jetlag, and she drew obscenities on his face; it was that kind of fun weekend. fast-forward, about 4 or 5 years later we had drifted apart a bit but he hmu to lmk he was coming up to my area for work in a few months and wanted to see if we could meet up again. this time, i had an apartment with some friends, although i was struggling with money a bit. i checked in with the roomies about it and told him it sounded fine. a week before he came up, he messaged me to talk about the trip that he's leaving for soon. and then, strangely, he started calling himself names ("i'm such an asshole, seriously, i'm the worst, etc.") i was like, "Why? What's going on?" and, basically, he told me he wanted to pay me money to have sex with him. he knew i was a lesbian, he was one of the first people to know after i figured that out in early high school, and he'd supported me through it. stunned and internally disgusted, i politely declined and told him it was fine, and he accepted that, but then he asked for pictures for money instead. gave me a $ rate per pic and everything. i was horrified at this point, i said no, and he kept asking, saying he'd just "always wondered what i looked like." that honestly made it feel like i never knew the guy. he always had these intentions.
a day before he started his trip to my state, i told him i had a family emergency and wouldn't be home to hang out. after that conversation, i removed and blocked him on all social media. he never tried to contact me again. /shrug
I've had an online friend for a little over a year now. She's been with me through everything and knows all about me, and I know a lot about her. But we live on opposite sides of the country. Its sucks, and I have this massive fear that if I say I want to meet she will ghost me or something. However, she has hinted at it but I'm still rather scared. :(

I had essentially the same exact experience with a person I met on discord, the one at 11:00 or so. Creepy how close it is. Haunts me as a mistake to this day.
A good story about this is this pretty popular group of youtubers you probably have never heard about called the yogscast. They started out as just buddies playing wow together 11 years ago until they started a youtube channel. Started meeting one another and at some point their main channel even became one of the most subscribed channel a long time ago. Now they all work together in an office and even have their own company. Think about that, just a group of online friends that got really popular and now works together in a company they started
