Received my copy last week and I really like the way the game has so many options that you never feel locked into a single strategy. The marbles are okay, but I like the way the dice work in their other game Grand Austria Hotel. I might try colored dice. Line them up 1-5 ( 6 reroll )
I was really interested in hearing your thoughts on this one as this was one of my favorite games played at the Dice Tower Retreat last December. Glad to see how much you enjoyed it! Can’t wait to get this tabled again now that I’ve had a chance to pick up a copy.
Wow, excellent game. But a brain burner. I watched two game play videos and never saw as many "take backsies" and "Oh, I forgot to move this up/down on my turn" in a video before - and this was by people who had played several times before making a video. I guess that made our group feel better about our many take-backies and "oops, I forgot to..." All said, great game. I have to play it again soon.
Golem is my game group’s biggest disappointment so far of 2022. I would like to note we love heavy crunchy euro’s; Lacerda’s, Ark Nova, etc. and even “solo” games like paladins of the west kingdom. But. No part of this game felt “fun” for any of us. Really trying not to sound too hyperbolic, but at its MOST basic core, the game play is picking up 8 marbles and placing down 1 worker 4 times. Yes we get that they activate a whole cog wheel of actions, but even watching the cog spin when you pick up a marble felt… meh. Even the “best” turn of someone picking up exactly what they need to activate all possible actions for that pick up, where the whole table could even acknowledge the move, just felt “ok” at best. It felt like so much crunch just to get the ONE thing to line up. Not to mention that upgrading the double reward for killing your golem was waaaay more powerful than we liked (sure was better than activating them) and that there wasn’t any penalties for never starting your turn with 0 golems just put whoever upgraded that first and just eliminated half the game by killing their golems seemed to put them far ahead of everyone else. As they no longer had to worry about repercussions of not catching their golems. And to piggy back on your marble device critique… man was that inconsistent and flimsy. Nothing was worse than having the last round fall in a way where the ONE action you need to be at 3-4 marbles garners 1-2 and the mirror action is also at 1-2… just feels incredibly deflating. Sure it’s a novel idea, but it just didn’t feel fun for any of us. And we love tracks in games. Give us all the tracks. But only 12 moves to actually do anything with them… and still take up 3 hours of our time…. I don’t think we will ever table it again when Grand Austria Hotel or any of the above games mentioned are available. I’m glad others enjoy it. But unfortunately we found way more not to like about it than what you mentioned.
Totally hear you, it's interesting to me which euros click with some people and others. I've been exactly in those shoes, of seeing other people love a game that that didn't work for me.

Almost bought Lorenzo recently but heard about the new version and decided to wait. As I've been playing solo a lot lately Golem sounds like it might be a good option. Would love to hear your insights on solo mode once you get an opportunity to play it.
Thank you for the review! This is probably the next game I will try. I did see that their latest Kickstarter, Anunnaki, does have add-ons for this and other games, like Lorenzo. I kind of wish they would just offer them for sale and not go through KS.
I really want to like Golem, since, so it’s rare to see a game about our culture and especially one that’s isn’t Biblical. But… I kinda want any area controlling, dice chucking game of battling golems instead of an abstract Euro game. Still, I’m glad it exists. 😄
It's interesting to hear what you think about the Jewish theme. I didn't like "Golem" when I first saw it. But after that my interest grew a bit, so I ordered it, but it hasn't arrive yet (after 4 months). But I'm still a bit on the fence about the game. I find some of the mechanics interesting, especially the rabbi actions as one-time worker placement spaces. And I always like the starting tiles giving different sets of starting resources each game. The low player interaction is really a problem. And I wonder if the replayability is good enough.
Not that you're not already pumping out an insane amount of content.. but have you thought about a monthly top 10? Something like 12 different top 10 lists that you revisit every year.. First up Top 10 Mid to Heavy Euros.
If only this game would have finally released in Canada. Been waiting for ages. I feel they botched it a bit. Ever since I first heard about Golem so many new games were announced that my hype for this has died down a lot since.

oh, man I always second guess non shuffling and non dice randomness. Is the marble thing random or weighted? Can it be manipulated?
