    Ahh, so that's why some people quote the line as "No *Luke* , I am your father.", everyone was actually just quoting the obscure radio drama instead!

    • @justinmiddleton8818
      @justinmiddleton8818 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Genra The film's comic adaptation from Marvel also has the same dialogue, where Vader actually uses Luke's name in the famous reveal. That is unlike in the novelization and film itself where it's just "No, i am your father" and thus the radio drama wasn't the only adaptation to use it.

    Ben: And this is your father's lightsaber.
    Luke: Wow, cool.
    Ben: And this is your father's lightsaber's user manual.
    Luke: Oh, ok. Well that might be useful.
    Ben: And this is an engineering book on basic lightsaber repair and maintenance.
    Luke: ... Are you having a clear out or something?

    I wouldn't be surprised if his work in the audio dramas is what got Mark Hamil into voice acting.

      Fun fact: His first filmed voice role actually came out a few months before Star Wars did: he has a minor role in Ralph Bakshi's Wizards. Before that, he was in one of the more obscure Hanna-Barbera shows a few years prior...

    Come to think of it, it's really impressive that the first one especially manages to be so exciting given the thing it's adapting owes /so/ much of its success to visuals and cinematography and just, y'know, the language of moviemaking. It's kind of wild! But yeah, I do remember--after your previous video on this intrigued me--checking out the trilogy and, though I enjoyed the latter two okay, spending them mostly just missing the epic, exciting feeling from the first one, of this whole new sci-fi adventure unfolding before me over the rough skeleton of the movie most of us know with our eyes closed at this point.
    Even listening through, I must have missed the part where the Jedi adaptation was so much later, that's wild and does kind of explain the length--and didn't clock that easter egg at all either.
    Anyway, gotta say I love Theatrical Monologue Guy Darth Vader. It's such campy fun.

  • @H250V

    It is an oddity, but yeah: knowing how these came to exist do catch my eye...well, ear, though it is a shame that for Jedi, they couldn't get Mark back...however, his replacement does manage to capture the style that I find most of his sound alikes do seem to try and emulate. Like he does sound like he's at least a year or so older aftee what happened in Empire. Do also like the interactions between them, and ngl, even if intrusive, I do like the idea of Vader interjecting between the conversation of Han and Land as he makes his entrance into the betrayal; maybe change the dialogue a bit, but it does still feel intimidating.

    One thing reviews like this make blatant for me, is how (Especially in America) we practically worship film. Unless a creator is explicit and almost aggressive about it, even their original books may be seen as 'secondary' to any film adaption. This has become true with 'The Lord of the Rings', anyone who strongly argues that the books take precedence over the films is seen as an 'Uber-Nerd' that should just relax.
    Now, George didn't bother to do that with any of the Expanded Universe written material, but NOW even the creator's view on what constitutes Star Wars is no longer seen as valid by many. Only the system making movies is seen as legitimate- Even if those films obliterate what came before.
    This 'Worship of Cinema' is so pervasive when the 100 year anniversary of the ACTUAL sinking of the Titanic was being memorialized, the production adapted THE FILM for their presentation. That's beyond disrespectful, almost horrifying, but it makes the point- Film: Final Authority.
    Anyway, I appreciate your appreciation of this now almost completely forgotten bit of Star Wars history. Well done.

  • @manjiimortal
    @manjiimortal ปีที่แล้ว

    People getting so worked up over the expanded universe being discarded, which was obvious and predictable, was bizarre as well, because George Lucas always saw the EU with utter contempt. He certainly enjoyed the money he got out of it all, but he clearly saw himself as being the only person who could create the "real" Star Wars. Had he ever gotten around to doing sequel films, he instantly would have thrown the EU into the fire.
    It's interesting how Empire and Jedi didn't get the big expansion Star Wars got, but then again even the novel adaptations stuck much closer to the final film, whereas Star Wars' adaptation was following an earlier script.

      Most Star Wars games I played weren't even retellings. The first Rogue Squadron for instance was primarily adapted EU stuff because Lucas had an embargo on video game retellings to the point where Factorr 5 couldn't even use a specific starfighter. Shadows of the Empire had only one scene from Empire Strikes Back and the entire game was about Dash
