WOW! Many Bravos 👏 You played it perfectly without any flaws! Vivaldi, Telemann, Corelli, all Baroque my fav! Thank you for playing it, so I can go over and over. I can’t wait to learn how to play Suzuki 4. How exactly do I begin Suzuki lessons online with you? How do I pay? You have motivated me to get on with lessons. Thanks!
I noticed in the early section you play closer to the bow tip. Is that the best position for you or is that what the piece demands? It looks a little uncomfortable even for you.
Good question. Generally, Baroque music is predominantly in the upper half of the music, especially with long passages of running notes, or for series of short 8th notes. That's not to say it MUST be done that way, but that generally that's how it's done. If it looks awkward on me (or uncomfortable), it's not, really. Maybe it looks awkward because my short arms have to extend. Anyway, no, it's not uncomfortable!
Red Desert Violin I remember when i tried to practice the section with the sequence of 1/8th notes, the accented 1st note in each group pushed my bow closer and closer to the end each time. Soon the sound chokes or i don't have the bow space to continue the phrase when the notes open up. I never got past that part.
Yes, good observation. So, you need to learn some bow-distribution skills. The accented note uses more bow because it just DOES. So what you have to do is learn to "float" your up bows so that they return you to where you need to be, back to the original spot. OR, you can float SEVERAL up bows, so that you regain a couple inches on each up bow.....so that when the next ACCENTED downbow comes, you will be restored back to where you need to be. You can practice a simple scale this way. (that might make a good video....I'll make a note to myself to do that video) Oh, and to "float" the up bow, just use less bow weight and more bow speed. You can get really good at it so that it's effortless.
Red Desert Fiddle I can try that. Great advice! I imagine floating sounds better bowed nearer to the fingerboard? Anyway thank you so much i really like the quality and style of your explainations. Also lovely performance. This speed is so much less hectic sounding than the recorded version i heard. (And playable)
Yes, I don't think we should be obligated to copy someone else's tempo. It is an INDIVIDUAL THING! Thanks for the kind words. YES, more bow speed, lighter bow weight needs to be further from the bridge.
This doesn’t seem particularly ready. Lots of pitch and landing issues, bowing is struggling, not flowing. Maybe get more comfy with it and re-record. Loosen up the bowing arm, it’s super tight
Hi Matthew, I have an ENORMOUS online course for Suzuki Book 4. It's huge. But there is good news: I just finished a course called "Suzuki Book 4 Songs Coach"....which is JUST tutorials on just the songs in Book 4. It will be on sale at the end of June. Email me if you wish to be notified when it goes public. (lora@reddesertviolin.com) Best of luck to you!
LOL....it's not an easy piece, that's for sure. I think it is forgivable to slow down on that hardest spot...what is it, page 3? So if it's too hard, it would be better to slow down there than to play it sloppy. Good luck! This piece is WORTH ALL THE HARD WORK!
