    I too have watched numerous videos on YT about camper builds. I also want my build to be removable. Your build has given me several new ideas which I will incorporate into mine. I especially like the idea of covering the outside of the box with paneling so it doesn't look so trashy. I like that way better than just painting the box. I also like the lighting options and the heater. Great build!!

    Love the setup. The few things I would add that you don’t have or didn’t show is an overhead light of some sort to allow for reading and a small solar panel to help maintain the battery on longer trips. Consider a solar panel for an electric fence or something similar and weather/wind resistant that would mount flush to the top of the camper shell. Overall, excellent video and I took away a few ideas for my build.

    • @Outside605
      @Outside605  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry for the delayed reply. I miss comments from time to time. I do have overhead "tap" lights that are mounted to the carpet ceiling with sticky back Velcro squares. Pretty slick.
      I did update this setup earlier in the summer. I added a solar charge controller that utilizes a portable solar panel.

    Very nice setup. The chair is key so you can hang out back there without being hunched over the whole time. I have a cab height shell just like you so I went with a low profile cot and that allows me to sit up straight without hunching, however, I give up any kind of storage space under my bed. Works for me though and looks like your system works great for you. Good job on everything!

    • @Outside605
      @Outside605  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Years ago I started with a cot. It worked great. I found Rubbermaid totes that were the perfect height to slide under the cot. I liked how quick it was to tear down if I didn't want it in the back of my truck. My current setup is much more functional for longer trips but it takes up a lot more space. Like you said, the chair is essential, especially on days where its raining or uncomfortable to be outside.

    I just watched another setup on another channel. Something you might do is wire the rear battery so that it charges off the truck while driving . Thus eliminating the generator. But you have an awesome setup and I'll be copying your ideas, very nice.

    • @Outside605
      @Outside605  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I use a lithium battery and I'm not sure how well they play with the truck's alternator. I think it's doable but a guy would have to get pretty technical or creative to do it. Since I usually have the boat with me, I need the generator anyway to charge the trolling motor batteries. Thanks for watching

The carpet runner was just so simple and so smart! A couple questions for you: What is the width and height of the sleeping platform? It looks a bit higher than ones I have watched, but does seem more practical. Also, do you have any issues with dirt/dust getting into the camper?

    Nice build. Thanks for the ideas. Why does everyone put the bed/storage on the drivers side? If traveling alone, the weight would be more balanced if offset(passenger side) as opposed to all the weight being on the same side as the driver. Safe travels and well thought out strategy.

      That's a good question. Monkey see, monkey do I guess. I started truck camping out of need back when I was in college and I was broke. I slept on a cot in my old Ford Ranger on weekend fishing trips and always put it on the driver's side. When I decided to build a more comfortable setup, I did the same. Part of the reason for switching to a lithium battery was to cut some of the weight on that side.
      Safe travels as well.

      I think the weight differential - side to side - is very negligible. I built mine on the drivers side because I sleep mostly on my left side and wanted my feet at the door. Nice build by the way!

      Thanks for watching. In the weeks since I filmed this video, I'm in the process of completely rebuilding my setup. It will be complete this Saturday and if all goes well, I'll have a new video up of the new one. It's pretty similar but more functional. Better electrical system with lithium power, integrated ventilation fans, better lighting, and better fit/finish/ergonomics. Stay tuned and thanks again.

    Nice work and great plan. I like the lights and the heater! I have the same truck and shell, and am thinking of how to build it out. I do have a couple of questions: How to you open and close the tailgate and shell window from inside the truck bed? And, how is the platform anchored in the truck bed? Thanks!

    • @Outside605
      @Outside605  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for watching. I've found for me, it's easier to climb in with the tailgate already closed. I see some people using a rope to pull it shut but I haven't come up with a good way to add that and make it look good. As far as the shell window, I just reach out and pull it closed. Kind of crude but it works well enough for me. Once I come up with something, I'll be sure to share.
      The platform is not attached at all. I added rubber furniture "feet" to the bottom of the platform. It really grabs the carpet and doesn't move. Even on rough or bouncy trails, it stays put surprisingly. This also makes it easier to remove if I need to use my truck to haul things.
      Good luck on the build and thanks for stopping by.

      Tailgate: I added a leather strap about a belt width with a loop on the end to grab Made it about a foot-long and connect it to the tailgate using an existing tailgate latch bolt.
      Shell window: I have I single latch in the center so I made a z shaped handle out of aluminum sheet metal and drilled a hole just large enough for the latch to fit through about 1 inch diameter Took the nut off the back of the latch added the new bracket then reinstalled the nut.

    I really like this set up. Simple, yet effective. Doesn't keep your truck from being a truck. Could you have built the platform lower, so that you could sit up on the bed? Or is it low enough as it is? I am just curious if that was by design, and if so what the purpose was? I am planning a build soon and have been gathering ideas for a while. Your's is by far the closest that I I have seen to what I want, I was just wondering if there was a reason to build it higher that i had not thought about it.

    • @Outside605
      @Outside605  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I built it taller so I could put a 5 gallon pail underneath. With that height, sitting up on the bed wasn’t possible. I also have a chair back there so if I needed to sit, I had a place to do so.
      For some, it would make more sense to build lower. In my case, I liked the storage.
      Thanks for watching 👍🏻

    • @mountainsmoore3657
      @mountainsmoore3657 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Outside605 Makes perfect sense. 👍🏼 Since my wife occasionally goes with me I was thinking of building it with slates that will slide out. In that configuration, you wouldn’t have room for a chair, so I was thinking that it might be nice if the bed was low enough to sit up on, if needed. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I just have tons of ideas and crazy thoughts about it.

      In that truck, no. It didn't have a rear window even though the camper shell did. I've always thought it would be a good idea in case a person had to make a quick exit.
