LOL oh man I have so much nostalgia watching this. I had the same dilemma back in the early 2010s. It was so rare for my friends come and visit me in DTLA cuz no one was willing to brave the traffic, let alone park. Mind you this was back then, I can't even imagine it now.
The helicopter footage was hilarious! That, I def don't miss.

Would the Arts District be better? In my experience it seems quite a bit more insulated than Little Tokyo in a good way. Less nasty stuff.
I also find it interesting that your friends aren’t willing to visit you in downtown. It’s about the easiest place to get to in LA without a car. I frequent DTLA because I don’t really worry about parking or driving there, and am always able to get a bunch of friends to go with me.
Personally I don’t care for the beach or the stuff that’s around there. But you’re right, if you live out by the beach, housing is generally very old, very flimsy, and very expensive. You need to recalibrate your expectations. But if that’s where your social circle is with no plans in the future to change that, then it’s not a bad idea. Just be ready for a large drop in housing quality and a large increase in expenses.

Ngl man, it sounds like you need better friends. I have pals spread out all over LA (Long beach, the valley, hollywood, downtown, etc), and we always manage to touch base when we can, even with long stretches traffic n all. Sure we're busy adults and we can't chill all the time. It'll sometimes be months between meet ups, but we still make the effort. The fact that your friends never come visit you in DTLA is lame.

I'm obsessed with los Angeles but I absolutely despise downtown. It feels like the apocalypse after 30 years of lifelessness and depression and suffering. Cold, isolating, depressing, crushingly sad, leave it far behind for the sake of your soul

I choose nature and less people. The max I ever spent in a city was Vienna for 10 months working an a nanny. City life is interesting and convinient but, not for me.

Downtown would be better if it had more parks and was less stinky 😕
