I always decide a color palette for my flowers that complements the exterior colors of the house, and I find that red and purple/blue are pretty easy to work with and match with almost any home. I was so thrilled when I learned the "little bit of dirt" terrain paint trick, and that's also something I use on the roots of trees to make them pop more with those rocks at the base like you said.
