    Mark, you should write a book about shmups. I think a lot of people (me) would enjoy having all your knowledge and insight in a book! Lavishly illustrated with pink bullet hell images of course.

      Yes galuda on ps2 is also awesome, especially the arrange mode :-D

  • @brightsuperstition
    @brightsuperstition 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Also, this game's incredible emphasis on accessibility via its amazingly varied wealth of options for training mode feels really relevant right now in mid-November 2021 with the recent social media whining that's begun from "hardcore" players complaining about Elden Ring providing checkpoints/respawn points prior to all of its boss fights. DOJ is probably one of the hardest games ever made and its devs have no qualms with giving players all the tools they need to practice and master it. From Software is doing the same with Elden Ring by giving players ways to minimize frustration as they learn the ins and outs of bosses, and yet "hardcore" players somehow believe that this makes bosses easier or damages the difficulty of the game.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah most "hardcore" players these days are actually sort of scrubby ha. The only reason why training options would be seen as a negative is by someone who doesn't have any experience with playing games that are actually very difficult.

    • @TonyTonyRedgrave
      @TonyTonyRedgrave 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Souls(style) games putting checkpoints right in front of bosses is great, vast majority of the time you would have had to do anything more in previous entries it didn't provide a meaningful challenge, just wasted time and killed the flow, I'm 100% on board with Elden Ring's direction here (not that sekiro was really any different) simply because of the way the games are built. Big reason bed of chaos is such an awful thing instead of a janky but altogether not very hard setpiece is the minute and a half run TO the arena. To a lesser extent, something like riding the elevator every time you died to Dragonslayer Armor sucked.
      but you seem to be (rather smugly) promoting an absolutist line of thought that would go as far as to dictate every game should have save states or 'training' options for every section of every stage and boss when that simply would not be an appropriate fit for many. Tell me you learned to max rank a Mega Man Zero or Devil May Cry game by save and load stating constantly to grind out muscle memory and I will suggest that we did not have anywhere close to the same experience. I think it's absurd to argue otherwise. It's up to the developer to decide how to approach checkpoint placement and training options like this but it's also quite plausible doing too much could push a game's balance in a direction that a reasonable player could fine to be too forgiving.

    Great review, I second this as my favorite shmup port of all time. I got my DOJ 1-ALL with this port. Got my J-PS2 hooked up to my Blast City in 15khz mode with the Sync Strike for a complete PCB-like experience.

  • @RinMariiiii
    @RinMariiiii 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I got this in 2005 when I was 16 years old.
    But the game was too frustrating for me at the time so I sold it some years later. Probably because at the time, tate'ing contemporary TVs was a crapshoot unless you knew what you were doing so I had to play it in a small and intolerable format.
    But I distinctly remember the super play replays and DVD. I also managed to get to 1-5 in Death Label with Shotia bomb spam lmao, and then my brain stopped working when two Hibachis appeared.

    it's funny how full circle gaming has gone now, where back then developers would have 3 of the best players in the world looking over every single little thing in the game to make sure it's the best game possible, and now we release half finished games plagued with issues because we as the consumer should be grateful for it now, always found that interesting

    The super play DVD included with the game is an NTSC-2 DVD. DVD video playback region encoding is separate from videogame software region encoding. If you don't have an NTSC-2 region DVD player, try running it in software like VLC Media Player that can ignore region playback restrictions.
    The most annoying aspect of the video is a lack of any chapters... the replay is simply one long single chapter. Thankfully, with the ESPGaluda DVD they added in chapters for each of the levels.

      I would but I don't think i am going to because there is so little to comment on. Basically the mobile versions are kinda cute for what they are, but are not great as a whole just because they are so limited.

      @@TheElectricUnderground Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm just astonished how much the dev managed to cram in there and how well it plays when compared to alot of the java games I remember playing at the time, alot of which were complete rubbish really. Back then,( I'm old!!) no one ever really expected phone games to be as good as or even try and compete with consoles for market share. I still don't think they are generally as good as console even today but things have come a long way since then .

    Has anyone actually uploaded those DVD superplays to TH-cam? Even if I somehow managed to find a PS2 copy of DOJ, I don't think I'll be able to find a Japanese PS2 that can allow me to play those superplay movies. Anyway, if this port highlighted the importance of anything, it's the importance of having actual good players playtesting your game, and not just random shmucks doing the job. Imagine if someone like Zeromaster was in charge of playtesting all Doom ports or someone like Carcinogen in charge of playtesting all classic Resident Evil ports. We'd have way better ports.

    Unfortunatley i am quite the whimp, so without an easy mode, this is not the port for me. I actually bought the 360 version (100 euros) because it has the X mode which is kinda easy mode. And although its fair to criticise this port, but for the more casual shmup player like me, its perfectly fine. And yes. DOJ still needs the definitive port with with all the goodness we know from M2, that could be the ultimate shmup in fact.

This is the best one we got Resurrection instead. Just like Toaplan M2 has done a great job but we're not getting the better more hardcore Shumps from them either. I can think of so many like we have Ikaruga but not Radiant Silvergun. And none of the Raizing games PS has Battle Gregga we need some love on the Switch.

      I'm glad to hear it!! I think the issue with ibara is that it was ported to the ps2 and that port is an ugly mess.
