What both authors did was, instead of checking facts between firsthand accounts and hearsay, and, then of course, qualifying anything as hearsay as actually, wait for it, hearsay. Instead, they just went with the hearsay accounts because it made for more interesting reading and better book sales. Brodie, at least, was a tiny bit more honest about her work and agreed that it was psychobiography. She was also a fan of T.H. White’s psychohistory of the mythical King Arthur, published in 1938 (prior to her work) and much later compiled into what became known as Once and Future King. Your argument about church “history” has a few problems because of all this. But the biggest problem is that it is all irrelevant. It is a fallacy to claim that only a perfect man can create a great work. So, yes we can argue about the validity/historicity of the works that you mentioned. Since much of what the Mormon Conspiracy Theorists put out is based on pretty shaky grounds, much of it can be dismissed as conjecture with no proof. At the end of the day though, Joseph Smith’s reputation (and the works you mention are essentially treatments of his reputation in some circles rather than what we would normally call history) has no relevance in discussing the validity of the Book of Mormon or Book of Abraham, and so on.

It sounds like you have a case of arrested educational development on this topic. If you’d like to actually open your mind you can find intelligent and coherent arguments on both sides of this discussion at Plato.stanford.edu. You might want to start with the section on Moral Arguments for the Existence of God, for example. If nothing else, you’ll be able to come up with far more intelligent ways to express the beliefs you already hold.
