I have pale olive skin with a cool undertone (I've just realized that lately), but I love wearing all shades of dark purple during winter, especially true purple and red purple, but also the cooler shades every now and then. From now on, I'll pay attention to how each shade of dark purple looks when laid close to my face. Thank you for the useful info!
I would love a breakdown on taupe-maybe a tag-a-long to the beige video? I think you may have touched on this before but I feel as I’m aging that my winter coloring is feeling more muted< almost smokey summer tones? Is this possible? I used to get tons of compliments on vivid bright jewel tones and now I seem to receive more compliments with mint, icy blue and lavender. I need to visit you in Ireland. Happy Saint Patrick’s day! 🍀🍀🍀
Happy St. Patricks day! 🍀 I have a cool undertone and love purple. I was suprised when I bought a warm purple lipstick and it did not pop against my skin tone. This video was helpful for putting into context why. Thanks!
What’s amazing is how much better you look in the dark winter purple than the warm autumn purple. I know that you’re a cool winter so that makes sense since you are extra cool and a winter and the wrong purple was extra warm, but the difference on you was so obvious and a great visual representation.
I so appreciate the wonderful information you're providing. I love purple, but the warmer purple shades and really deep shades are definitely not my best look!
One could argue that the berry sweater (2nd item you showed) is not a warm purple, but a cool red. So just by looking at a color, how can you tell if it's going to pass off as a cooler shade of a warm color vs a warmer shade of a cool color, when it's all relative?
Thank you, I enjoyed the vid! I'd like a vid on greens & yellows too. I'm a WA/DA and that sweater you're wearing makes me look washed out. True purple & aubergine look good on me.
Great explanations as always. Purple is one of the colors I am a little scared to wear. As a cool summer person, I’ve starting to dip my toes into the medium light purples. I love mauves 😊
Yeah, blue heavy purple makes me look like an escapee from a zombie movie. It's amazing to see the difference in the skin tone. I like purple, but it's my worst color.
You look gorgeous in purple Sarah ! I wish i was that lucky. Im really not super warm. I have a warm olive complexion, but cool purples drain me and im not even too happy with the warmer purples either. The only two shades that look good on me are more burgundy and a deep soft true purple. Hope you had a Happy Saint Patrick's day!
Another lovely video. I thought of you this morning while we were singing a hymn to the tune of Danny Boy ☘ I also wished that whoever chose the choir robes had watched your channel first, because burgundy does most of us no favours, and polyester is particularly cruel given that most of us are women over 40.
Happy St Patrick day! I completed my training in Colour Analysis, and something that they told us was that true red was considered a neutral colour for colour analysis. (And we can obtain a cool red by adding a bit of blue and a warm red by adding yellow). This differs from your video where red is a warm colour. I guess some systems consider red as warm, while some as neutral? Thanks again for all your videos, love them all!
Red is on the warmer side of the colour wheel. I have found that one will find gaps in knowledge given by any training and only experience will get you really comfortable with the application of knowledge.
I've heard this from some other color analysis trainings too, including that "true red works on everyone." Logically, it doesn't make sense that a true red, out of all the colors on the color wheel, would be chosen as a neutral. In my opinion it doesn't work on everyone any more than black does. I also think that one's definitions of warm and cool are going to depend on your perception of what the warmest color is and what the coolest color is. To me they are yellow-orange and blue-purple. Greens and reds are halfway between the two, but theoretically the line between leaning cool and leaning warm for greens and reds could be slightly different for everyone. Grass green to me is neutral-warm. Others say grass is a cool green. Greens and reds are both made of ratios of blue to yellow, so technically they all contain both. Explains why teal can be considered a warm blue for autumn palettes or a cool green for summer palettes. But the same ratio can be found in bright aqua for winters and springs. Using the CMY color wheel rather than RBG, as another commenter pointed out, might get us closer to figuring out how red fits in parallel to this example.
Watching this on St. Patrick's (no Irish heritage, but I love celebrating; had some musician friends over last night for some trad tunes and whiskey!) 🍀 On topic, purple is such an interesting shade in its cool vs. warm aspect; thanks for the explanation!
I’m a bit late to this party, but I would love a video on beige/tan! I love the beach aesthetic, but I have cool undertones, and a lot of those colors seem like bad ideas for me. Would love some input on how to make it work!
I was so hoping you were going to say this. Since being draped last year, I've inadvertently added some warmer purples wile ordering online. I haven't decided how egregious it would be to wear plum as a True Winter. But I knew already that my best color has always been purple anything. This is reassuring. :)
Happy St. Patrick's Day Sarah! I'm a cool winter just like you a discovered true purple is one of my best colours :) I was wondering since Spring/Summer is coming if you could do best white or neutrals for cool undertones. Struggling a little to find our version of beige. I do love a bright white but was wondering if we have a beige. Thanks for these videos they are very helpful :)
Happy St Patrick’s Day!! I’m cool tone and love purple! My hair is not quite as dark as yours but close. You look radiant in your purples. I think it’s my ‘wow’ color too. I loooove plums and aubergine though. I have a lot of tops in this color and tried earlier today to declutter a few that had the most warmth to them. Thanks for the video! I’m curious about beige. It’s so “trendy “ and I don’t think it flatters people and it makes people look sickly. I even have beige linen pants and it looked “off” so I’m confused since it’s not near my face. ?
In the beginning you were using a yellow cyan magenta color wheel, but then you switched to red yellow blue logic. I think that if you stuck with the yellow cyan magenta logic, it would be helpful. Because a "true purple" on a YCM wheel is much easier to find. It is balanced between indigo and magenta. On a RYB wheel, it is much more difficult to comprehend the different shades of purple, because there is no magenta. There is just an awkward jump from "red violet" to red. And the problem with that is that red is composed partly of yellow.
Could you do some videos on the "odd" combinations please. I have a brown/olive/warm overtone but cool undertone, and now with silver hair and pigmentation on skin, I am really confused. I think I am winter, but dont know the intensity that is right for my skin and hair colours.
I understand your confusion. I don’t think you’ll get the answers you’re looking for in a generic TH-cam video unfortunately. If you get the opportunity to do a personalised colour analysis, you will get the answers and clarity you are looking for. Get in touch if you would like that. ☺️💕
@@sarahryanthestylecoach I'm not sure. I've seen those colors framed as reds with blue added to make them cool. Maybe it's just that they are not good colors for very warm undertoned people like warm spring and warm autumn.
@@michelem226 @sarahryanthestylecoach There are indeed some colour analysis systems that put true purple into the warm spring type. I've seen it a few times and it's in one of my warm spring into warm autumn colour wheels too. It was explained as the opposite colour of orange (very warm) and therefore the best purple as a contrast. From colour theory point of view I understand that, but don't agree in colour analysis. Personally I really don't think that looks good on me, indeed a warm spring/autumn. I prefer the red plum from the coat in the video on me, or red violet (is that the same?), combined with some gold jewellery. Plus it's my all time favorite colour.
I found this interesting. I am a light spring and my purples are either a light lilac or more of a true purple. The warmer more aubergene is not great on me, but neither are purples which are too plum. Why then, as I'm warm, don't the aubergene purples look good? Is it because of my intensity and lightness as a light spring?
I’m no expert but that may be the case. I’m a True Autumn. Typically medium to dark colours look best on me. Aubergine is one of my best colours (along with dark olive and teal). Softer/paler colours wash me out, whether a lilac or most others colours.
@louise - I agree with bluebird. It's because of your lightness & intensity. Try to see the light spring palette online & see which version of purple suits you. I'm a warm autumn/ dark autumn POC. I can wear true purple & aubergine but I look terrible/ pale/ washed out in the light purple blouse that Sarah is wearing.
Purple is dificult for me, i tend towards eggplant but i genuinly stay away from it , i have 2 or 3 pieces in my wardrobe for all seasons and i'm ok like that 😊
That’s interesting. I have a dress in the same purple as the cooler one you had up with your cardigan. I also have a warmer purple cardigan with more red in it. I feel the darker purple washes me out a little, and something isn’t quite right with the redder purple cardigan. I think I need a to try your Sezanne cardigan colour. Silver (clothes) grey me out and gold is a bit too warm. Seems I’m bang in the middle of every colour. I’d love a video on greens, blues and pinks as I really struggle to see what looks right. Some make me look really yellow and others give me grey blotches if I take a picture.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I’d love to hear about greens.
I do have a video on green! 💚💚💚

You are so welcome Grayson! ☺️
