Wow you are by far the best guide for Rome. Glad to see someone with culture for a change making videos. I've watched all your Rome videos and they are amazing. Keep up the great work. By the way going back to Rome end of May 23 for the 4th time and still learned from ur videos. You are amazing
Thank you so much for your very kind comments! I'm so glad you enjoy my videos and the work I put into them. Please keep watching. There is lots more to come!
So happy I got to visit before the new rule. One of my best memories from Rome is spending a couple hours late at night just sitting on the steps watching an ancient sleeping city. But I understand, makes going up definitely easier to maneuver.
Yes I think it's a nice memory for a lot of people. I am sure people will find a new place to sit and enjoy the view. Rome is beautiful everywhere you look!
I totally agree with the Romans ! ! This was just a matter of time. Luggages should be ban also. We have to take care of these beautiful stairs and Roma ancient history. If we don't; Who will?? I can't wait to go.. Ciao Elyssa..
Hi Elizabeth, yes I also agree. But there are many who are upset by it. I agree with you also about the luggage. Let's hope this rule sticks! Enjoy your visit :)
It is such a special year, my daughter and I are going for my 50th and my daughters 17th birthday we both have our birthdays in Dec and what a better place to spend this wonderful time of Christmas and New Year in Rome. it is 100 days to us leaving for Rome and I just want to thank you for getting us so excited now..... We are coming from HOT South Africa to Rome in the middle of winter and hopefully, we will be prepared for the climate there. We will be living 700m from the Colosseum in a self-catering loft and we were trying to see what to do around the area.... YEPEE there is a big mall, as mentioned in your video, thank you so much. I am so much more set at ease now. Can you maybe inform us on what we can do on New Years in Rome? It is vibrantly celebrated in South Africa, are there any festivities in Rome over that time of the year? and maybe you can give some advice on what we should and should not do over New year, as in South Africa most of the shops are open right through the festive season. Thank you so so much for getting us into the Rome exiting mode .
Hello and thanks so much for following me, You will enjoy Rome in December. Just be aware that New Years is really busy in Rome. Here are some of the pages on my site you can check: www.romewise.com/rome-new-years-eve.html www.romewise.com/rome-at-christmas.html www.romewise.com/book-in-advance-in-rome.html Have a wonderful visit!
Now that you mention it: the steps without people sitting on them are really gorgeous. They are a masterpiece!!!! Thank you for pointing this out and for the background history! I hope you don't mind me saying that your shade of lipstick in this video is spectacular especially at sunset!!! Is it an Italian brand?
@@Romewise Great!!!! Thank you for the tip 😊!!! I'll check them out. Looking forward to your next video. If I can't be in Rome right now, your videos are like being there. Mille Grazie!!!
What’s the name of the shopping mall you mentioned? I wish the governor would control the harassing towards tourists from the illegal vendors 😡 Can’t wait to go back in 10/2020 Keep those videos coming!
Hello Milaries, and thanks for watching and for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoy the videos! The shopping center I mention is the Rinascente flagship department store, just a couple of blocks away. It's enormous and has something for everyone. I am with you about the illegal vendors. Would love to see that under control!
I 101% support these new rules. Many attractions around the world are ruined by tourist. Local government all over the world should really look into this problems.
Decorum is essential for a healthy tourist environment. Tourist can run amuck and ruin things in the long term. I agree it will be more beautiful this way!
Well it's one small step. As other viewers have noted, the city still has other things to address, but we have to start somewhere! Let's keep our fingers crossed.
I doubt the rule was enforced because of tourists eating on the steps. This was just my experience but when I was there in the summer of '07, some vendors but mainly scam artists lined the walls of the steps and you couldn't walk more than 10-15 feet before either being asked for money, propositioned to buy a knock off of some sort, or scammed with an exorbitantly priced rose (after you of course took it under the guise that it was free.) I did buy a decent knock off watch there so not completely complaining lol. That being said, it's my life's dream to go back to Italy - Rome and Florence to be specific. And Malta as well which I feel is often overlooked and underrated
Yes I am not 100% clear on why exactly they came up with the rule but either way, it's still in place and it's strictly enforced. I hope you can come back to Italy soon! Thanks for watching.
No I haven't but I have an idea what it must look like. I'll look for it, thanks! Yes, I think it's a matter of it simply being way too crowded now. Rome, like many travel destinations around the world, has become more and more crowded. We barely have a low season anymore.
Ì don't undesternd why " Scalinata della trinità dei monti " is called Spanish steps, when it was commisioned, and payed, by a French diplomat. So Why not " Escalier de Francaises " ? Do you know that the church " TrInità del Monti " and annexed Villa Medici, beautiful site of "Accademia di Francia in Italia" , are property of French Republic ?
Excellent points - yes I do know all that. It's all on my website, here: www.romewise.com/what-are-the-spanish-steps.html I explain that it's called the Spanish Steps because the piazza is called Piazza di Spagna because of the Spanish Embassy there. But you do make a very good point that the staircase and church are of French origin. Thanks for commenting and for sharing!
There are always idiots that ruin things for everyone. I have a beautiful photo from 32 years ago sitting on the step with the beautiful azaleas in full bloom. Must say we only sat for a quick photo and chat we friends then moved on. No eating drinking and sitting for hours. I do think it is a good move to ban sitting on the steps
Unfortunately yes. But I think there is also the factor that Rome is simply so much more crowded now than it was 30, even 10 years ago. And this is one way to manage the crowds and public safety.
I don't 100% see the logic in it. The eating part yes however because people litter. Min 6:59 = looks a lot better than having people sit on it with all those flowers!
I know. That is what many people are saying. But over time, it had gotten really really crowded there and often hard to even walk up them. Maybe this is in part a safety issue. We'll see how this plays out now that peak season is coming! Stay tuned!
@@Romewise I saw make it walkable and prohibit food as well as heavy objects going up and down the stairs. That creates more damage than people sitting down.

Too many people killed it. Have you seen the time lapse photos, someone did from 1957 to 2018 on sitting on the Spanish Steps? That was really cool.

@@Romewise That's why we are going in November. Less is more. 😁
There are benches along the monument to our lady
Yes there are a few but not that many spots available.

They may not have enough police around but when they are there, they do keep people from sitting on them...
