Building a DIY Pedalboard from an IKEA Crate

  • In which I turn one-third of a $10 pine crate from IKEA into a pretty great DIY pedalboard.
Credit for the idea goes to this article:
    www.instructables.com/id/DIY-...
though I did not follow the author's instructions exactly.
This is an easy project if you have access to a drill, a screwdriver, and a saw. From one crate you can make about two and a half pedalboards - two exactly like this, and one smaller flat board from the leftover piece.
The only other required materials are some L-shaped brackets, some rubber feet, and then (optionally) something to finish or paint the wood with. Adding in a roll of Velcro, I spent about $37 on mine.

Thanks for sharing! Just to add, before joining the back part to the board, apply some wood glue. You'll notice there are already holes for the long screws where the 2 parts meet. Can use the long screws to join them after applying the wood glue. Also, apply the finish/paint after glueing, so that the wood glue can penetrate into the wood fibers.

I don’t think that’s what these IKEA crates are. They’re clean and not full of splinters, for one thing, but also the width of the boards is totally different. And they’re already the exact right size for this without having to saw anything down.

I would NOT recommend this. It's creative, but if you want to buid your own just buy quality wood. The planks pull out of the nails when you try to remove a pedal from the board, you can re-enforce it with some wood screws, but the wood is so cheap even med wood screws will split the wood. Not sure how long it will last, especially with a Whammy pedal. It is not going on tour, but it will do in the office for a few months i guess. ( this is not personal or against teh creator, I had fun building it but it is NOT for me) My woodworking skills are less than a beginner, so take what I say with a grain of salt lol
