Our birds in the southeastern US (Georgia) have had a hard year, too. We had a hard freeze at an astonishingly late time of year. And very sadly, we've had to pick up a lot of dead baby birds and a few destroyed eggs.

Perhaps they have an urge to bring in new nesting material when the weather changes so that the nest remains camouflage in the wild ? As different weather can change what plants are doing well.
Regarding the nest material, i think its either to counter the mites in the nest (judging from her unfornutate night fly that costed important heat forvthe chicks) or really the lack of food to find and the need to check up on the chicks. Its just really all odds against them
Biddy doesn't look well at all maybe that is playing a factor in her bringing in nest materials instead of food? Anyway. These videos are up there with springwatch for quality 👌

At least we can keep track of a specific chick, we can name a chick now Should name it billey if it's guy, it's kind of a combination of biddy and miley
So sad to see that you are having a tough year with your bluetits too. My last 2 chicks remain and seem to be only days (or even hours) away from fledging. Both seem healthy and well. Have you noticed lots of bugs in your nest? My nest box seems infested and I can see bugs and likely fleas crawl around everywhere. I was aware that a nest was probably not very clean, but this seems more like an infestation 😓
That can happen sometimes ! It would happen in the wild also! give it a good clean inbetween the season to ensure no parasites stay for next year !Thanks Mork and Mindy are looking promising tho !!! thanks as always !
I have food out in the garden, meal worms , they haven't taken them and as I feed alot bird in garden they get gobbled up quickly by starling etc, not much more I can do I'm afraid,
I'm stunned at how quickly these chicks go from good to bad. I had no idea there was such a high mortality rate. Hopefully the last chick survives!

You may be right, I clean the nest box every year but going to make sure it extra clean this year !

I do, they ignored the offerings and bigger birds had them all gobbled up before to long also, frustrating
