I'm an autistic adult and im just about to start using pecs for the first time! I go nonverbal when I'm stressed or overwhelmed or just when there are people around I don't know. I think more people should consider it for their kids. sometimes it helps when you have the option to communicate without talking. it can even make verbal communication easier. I'm glad to start using it. I think I could have avoided a lot of meltdowns and frustration if I had a backup for communication.
I’m always greatful my son is verbal. When he was young his communication skills were very poor and transitioning was very difficult PECs really helped plan his days or when he became non verbal due to overload. He doesn’t need them anymore but still has moments of mutism when overwhelmed. There are so many free websites to get them too which is fantastic. Now the apps on the iPads are brilliant. Thanks for sharing
Great video. Thank you. Finally there's the first person who confirms that children don't respond well to pictures from pecs books but get better with real life pictures. That was so helpful to hear and to try making my own pecs book.
I feel overwhelmed & daunted just thinking where to start.. my 4yr old son is on the spectrum & non verbal.. he still doesn’t show any interest with any visual.. cartoon ones, i have failed @ potty training too. I might try your way of actually printing real photos ones.. thanks for demonstrating. Here in the UK, the health care system does not believe in ABA.. speech therapy is minimal, i need to help my by at home… thank you for this basic, clear demo.❤..
Thank you! My son's SLP made him a PEC board right before Covid but she didn't talk me through how to use it with him....and then she moved away. This helps a lot.
I found this video super helpful. I'm sure this will help new families learn pecs. Something I found helpful is using items that aren't easily accessible. My son looooves cars but he has a giant truck bin in his room so it's not something he would request. We keep kinetic sand on top of the fridge and so my son is a lot more likely to use his pecs for that.
Hey, thank you I'm trying to be the best of the best when it comes to pecs. I work with a client that is non verbal. But he is an adult. Its more very difficult with adults. Thank you I look forward to seeing your vidoes
This was very helpful. My son is 8 on the spectrum so very good job on this video! I use an ipad ( lamp app) and looking into another way for him to communicate. Thank u!
It's so crazy how hard it is for our kids to learn how to speak. Mine was throwing himself on the floor when we would request from him to say juice or milk at 2 years old. Then at 3 he finally was able to say those words. Now at 5 he still mainly communicates with one or two word phrases independently. We totally said no to pecs because we wanted to encourage verbal communication. I think we got lucky that he is just at that borderline of sever autism where with significant prompting and daily reinforcements we were able to get his speech started. Even if we are still at a very basic level after working hard at it for 4 years. At the deep end of the spectrum, it is way hard to get our kids to progress.
Yes verbal communication is very hard. With my son we can barley get him to make a sound when requesting things. It’s challenging but we will keep encouraging many forms of communication. I’m so happy to hear your son is doing well 💙
PECS actually does encourage verbal (vocal) communication. It's generally less response effort to use a vocal request than to pick up the icon and carry it over to the communication partner. And if it is more response effort, you want to provide that option. I would strongly encourage anyone to use PECS to help facilitate vocal language. It's common miconception that it will hinder vocal language development when the opposite is true. Also, at the end of the day, any form of communication is better than no form of communication.
Your amazing 😔 my son is also 6 nonverbal and the pecs system is so hard to get started at home I do have the cartoon binder I’m going to watch the other videos on how to make my own!
There's 3 aba centers bc there's no training in trinidad so they usually have to study abroad which means they are in high demand and expensive. But there are many speech therapist who try to help out and there are many schools, but they are expensive as well
Hi, your video was very helpful but I have questions. Once they are used to using that image ,do you leave it on hand for them to use at anytime? and whenever they become familiar with using a couple of pictures ,what happens if you don't have the food or item they are requesting? Will that have a negative impact on them if they are not receiving what they requested? Thank you so much for your time on making these videos. Will definitely be subscribing!
Yes have the pec/pecs on hand. The end goal is for the Child to give you the pec to communicate with no prompting. I would only present the pecs of things you have on hand. If it’s not available remove them. 💙
How do you make your pecks? Starting from 0 . I can't seem to find video? My daughter is good with pictures I thought it would be really helpful to make pecks with real pictures ❤ Please could you help me with this. Xx

Great video! My son was nonverbal and not interested in sign language whatsoever. PECS is awesome.

Amazing do they use these in schools as well
Yes it can be used in school as well. It can be added to a child’s IEP for communication goals.
@@ROCKNSTIMS Thanks for your response
Good ❤👍
Good video
Hello baby boy your ao pogi keep safe lagi
Very helpful 🙂
Does phase 1 start with one picture?:0
outcome of Phase 1 is for the learner to look at, reach for, pick up, and hand the picture/symbol to their communication partner.
Usually one picture, yes 👍🏽
I really want to start pecks with Emma bear
Thanks for this video I would love to start this soon
I love that you do the real life pictures I feel that Emma might like real life pecks instead of cartoon ones
Yes! Real life pictures was a big key in helping Christian find the connection to using pecs! 💙
