    Fun Fact: The word "mogwai" comes from a Cantonese word that means "demon" or "evil spirit." It's actually a creature in Chinese mythology that reproduces during rainy seasons and brings harm to humans.
    TBH, I just wanted to add something here that's NOT about Grogu.

      Gizmo is also an exception. Mogwai are all mean-spirited. He just happens to be a nice one.

    • @MrCageCat
      @MrCageCat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I read somewhere that originally the movie was going to be much darker, going for the angle that Gizmo is actually evil himself. There was apparently going to be a scene where the dad was on an airplane and the hostess (who was Chinese) told him the meaning of the word Mogwai means demon/evil spirit.

      @@MrCageCat I checked and you're right! I think they made the right call dialing it back, otherwise it might not be such a classic. I'm super curious what an R-rated version would be like though. I LOVE 80s creature flicks, even the terrible ones. 🙂

      @@deavenswainey6415 Would have probably been more horror then yeah. Who knows though? By the way, do you know that the person who created the Gremlin designs (Chris Walas) also helped to create the creature in The Fly, as well as the creature designs in The Fly 2 (as well as being the director of that film)? If you look at the designs in The Fly 2 (both the cocoon and the fly creature itself) you can actually spot some similarities between them and the first Gremlin film's designs.

      Fun fact: According to the novelization, the Mogwai were ordered by some mysterious “galactic powers” to travel to every inhabitable planet in the universe in order to “inspire alien beings with their peaceful spirit and intelligence and to instruct them in the ways of living without violence and possible extinction.”
      There are other interesting tidbits of note - from the reveal that the last significant time Gremlins had an impact on a town was back in China in 1945, or the secret desire Mrs. Peltzer had to join the Army, OR that Gremlins know they’re Gremlins even though they’ve never heard the word before, or that the Mogwai can speak - and not only do they speak, they have conversations that are very articulate:

    Gremlins is one of my favourite films and probably my favourite Christmas film. The original script that Chris Columbus wrote was way darker. I’m pretty sure Barney, the dog, died, the mom died too. When Billy comes back home, he looks around for his mom and her severed head is thrown down the hall way towards him. And Pete, Corey Feldmans character, would be dragged away into a forest, or something like that, by a bunch of gremlins and his screams would be drowned out by near by carollers. Also there was no Stripe originally. Gizmo would have turned into the main gremlin but Steven Spielberg thought Gizmo was too cute

    • @agenttheater5
      @agenttheater5 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think it's a better way, not only because that betrayal of the cute would be too much to bear, but also to show that the Mogwai have different personalities - there's always a token good one in a species.

    The dead dad story was almost cut from the film because they felt it was out of place but they decided to keep it because it was a good way to show the overal tone of the movie, being at the same time goofy and quite dark. In the sequel they even made fun of this part... in fat the sequel made fun of everything possible from the first movie.

      Joe Dante got a LOT of pressure from the studio to cut the chimney story - the movie was testing REALLY well and they expected to make a massive pile of cash with it, but the chimney story really threw them. "If you'd only cut that scene, the movie would be PERFECT!" they would say. Spielberg was the final arbiter between Dante and the studio - if Spielberg didn't have Dante's back, it would have come out. Dante said the back and forth went on for weeks until Spielberg told him one day that the studio REALLY wanted the chimney story gone, bottom line. Dante asked Spielberg what he thought of the chimney story to which Spielberg said he didn't like it, it wasn't his kind of thing, but it was Dante's movie and Spielberg would back him up whatever he decided to do. So it stayed in. :)

      Warner Brothers wanted a sequel and for Joe Dante to direct. Dante said the first film was a complete story and there was nothing left to do with the Gremlins. However, WB kept on and Dante said he would direct, but only if he had free reign to make the film how he wanted and Warner Brothers agreed. So that's why he could crank the absurdity up. The bat winged Gremlin was meant to actually mock the upcoming Batman film, but Warner Brothers actually loved it and said that was a great way to advertise their upcoming film. The budget was meant to be smaller but due to various issues and things Joe Dante wanted, WB kept on giving more money. Gizmo and the Gremlins look much better in the 2nd film, due to new animatronic techniques that had been developed and new types of puppets that had more detail.

    Did you spot the Spielberg cameo when Billy's father is at the convention?
    Also the double bill on the cinema marquee during the opening titles ("Watch the Skies" / "A Boy's Life") were the working titles for Close Encounters and ET, respectively.

    When are you guys reacting to "Death Becomes Her" (1992)? If you appreciate 90s over the top dark comedies you must see it. Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn like you've never seen them before.

    You definitely need to do Gremlins 2. They stepped-up the practical effects a lot for it, as well as the humor. Pretty much everything went up a notch. It had a bigger budget but wasn't a Christmas movie. It's a lot of fun to watch.

    I rewatched it last year for the first time since I was a kid. Absolutely loved it, saw it the other day again, a new Xmas tradition. It still shocks me how violent it was. This and Indiana Jones Temple Of Doom were responsible for the PG-13 rating in the US and the 15 here in the UK
    You should do a creature feature series and start with Critters.

    Such a cute if not crazy comedy horror film, from Producer Steven Spielberg and Director Joe Dante. They showed this film and it's Sequel as part of the Sci-fi Christmas Day Movie Marathon, along with The Shadow, Matinee, The Flintstones, Jetsons: The Movie, BATMAN in 2003.

    The hats are great...you both would've made great extras in the tavern scene!
    Though they might seem similar in some respects, but Ghostbusters and Gremlins were released within days of each other, so GB didn't have any influence on Gremlins....but FLASHDANCE had opened earlier in 1983, allowing them to work in Michael Sembello and the Flashdance Gremlin...
    Chris Walas, who did the effects for Gremlins, went on to do the makeup and effects for one of your favorites, The Fly. He rather infamously dropkicked the Gizmo animatronic right after filming ending, he'd had such trouble getting it to work...
    And, of course, Gremlins 2 has big spoilers about survivors from THIS film!

    Kate's story about her dad became notorious for coming outta nowhere and adding nothing to the plot 😂 (tho I guess it added to the dark tone of the film). They actually make a meta reference about that in the sequel 😉
    If you do watch the sequel, btw, it has a VERY different tone from this one, it's much more cartoony with TONS of celebrity cameos and meta humor. I don't like it as much as the first one, but it's ok if you wanna watch a really crazy movie 🤪

    I would say that the most adorable part in this film, to me, is when the Gremlins are in little scarfs and hats posing as carolers singing the main theme to the movie. That part always cracks me up. The bar, and theatre sequences were also very funny.
    Also: 10:07 Johnathan Banks (Mike Ehrmantraut) from Breaking Bad, and Better Call Saul.
