While my older rat, Shadow, is still happy doing tricks and running around, she tires much more quickly than my younger girls. Still, it's kind of nice to see her actually sitting still XD (I swear that young rats are on energy drinks!) Anyway, it looks like Oskar is enjoying old age. Now is the golden age for Oskar, food, cuddles, and sleep. I only hope my old age is this nice! 😄

Our rat Phoebe, who will be 3 years and 5 months this week, started developing hind leg paralysis due to nerve degeneration. She was about 80% paralyzed in her hind legs and 50% in one of her front legs. After reading a tip from the Rat Lady Debbie Ducommun we started giving her 10 mcg of vitamin B12 twice a day. Within one day her front leg was almost back to normal. The hind legs improved to about 50% function and stabilized. Liquid B12 actually tastes good so rats do not seem to object to it. Measuring a tiny amount like 10 mcg can be tricky if you are not good at math. If there is enough interest I might make a video that takes the guesswork out.
That sounds very interesting and I would be willing to try it out if I get another rat with weak hind legs (I had quite a lot of old rats with this problem). Do you buy the liquid B12 at the pharmacist? I would be interested in a video as well.
You can get B12 in a liquid suspension at a store that has a good supply of vitamins. That could be a grocery store or health food store. Usually they are fruit flavored. They do not taste like medicine at all. Look for a bottle that has 1000 mcg of B12 per 1 ml of liquid. You probably have a 1ml syringe laying around from using doxy or baytril. You'll need that. It is really easy to get the dose wrong by a factor or 10 or 100, so I definitely plan on filming a video today that will make it easy for the math challenged to figure this out so they don't overdose their rat.

My current rats are about a year now and are still very healthy, but once they turn 2 years old the risk of hind leg weakness/paralysis is getting much higher. I had more rats with hind leg problems now than rats who had no problems.
At this point my oldest boy is probably going to be on meds for the rest of his life, but he's very happy about that because it means he gets a treat (with his meds mixed in) every 12 hours.
Such a lovely little grandpa. Look at how much he's enjoying his senior rat life, saying thank you with some good old boggling. For some reason, this is making me very emotional right now. Most of my rats are over two years old and there's nothing more precious than a cuddly, lazy rat grandpa. But you know they won't be around for that much longer and it's hard. My boy Markus is the last of his original pack, he recently got three new grandpa friends that he loves a lot. Like Oskar, he has hind leg paralysis, but he's so brave and doing great. Rats are special.
I agree, rats are special and one of the best pets you can have. They are often especially sweet when they are old but this does not make it any easier to let go when the time to say goodbye finally comes. Oskar was the rat who lived for longest, nearly 3 years, and he was quite famous as he has been on BBC The One Show to show the tricks he has learned. This is the reason I am not going to adopt rats anymore, it's just too painful to watch them grow old after spending so much time getting to know them, getting them to trust you and forming a connection, then dying after just 2 -3 years. Nadine Mitschunas : This is hard for me. I just found your channel only a few days ago and totally fell in love with your boys only to discover they are all gone but Oskar. Heartbreaking.
I always tried to give my rats healthy food but when they were very old and their appetite was not so great anymore I have also given them food I would not have given to a younger rat, just to make them eat something. Especially when I had to give them medicine as well.

Thank you. Oskar is not with me anymore, he got so ill earlier this year that he had to be put to sleep. He was such a sweet rat, also his brothers, they have a special place in my heart.
I'm sorry for your loss. I've had a lot of pets over the years, including rats and losing them never gets any easier. At least, with a heart the size of yours, they'll have plenty of space to play together. Love your video's!

It is always so hard to say goodbye to our beloved rats, they have such a short life, but most of the time we have with them is full of fun and I enjoy every day having them in my care. I have two rescue rats now, very sweet rats, but I decided I will probably not have any more rats after them for health reasons (asthma). At least for several years.

Hopefully you'll be able to have them again some day, but at least you'll give those two rescue boys a long, loving life while they're with you. Bless him.I had two rats.They were turning two in June and July.Unfortunately my one rat had a serious breathing problem and had to be put down.A few days later my other rat started not using his back legs or front legs .He just got really bad and then we had to put him down. Obvi I’m literally dying but we didn’t want them to suffer. Bless your rat,he is such a cutie.

I have enjoyed them more than I can express. It always surprises me how such little animals can leave behind such big holes in our hearts. It's clear from the videos how much you loved your little guys, Theo, and Oskar and Bertie and Alfie and the ones who went before. You gave them a great life. I just wish it could have been longer, but perhaps they wouldn't be so loving and so enthusiastic about life if they didn't have to pack it all into such a short stay with us. Thank you very much for your nice comment. It was very sad to lose all of the Rat gang, and Oskar quite recently. They really are such affectionate pets which makes it even more difficult to let them go. I really wish they would live longer but you are right, their life is short but the time with them is such an intensive one you hardly have with any other pet (apart from maybe a dog). I have 2 rescue rats now but I don`t do such an intensive training with them as I did with Oskar, Theo, Bertie and Alfie. I still play with them and we do some tricks but I need a bit of a rest at the moment. I sometimes think it would be nice if there is something like a rat heaven and when I die I would see all my rats again there.
This reminds me so much of one of my pet rats I had some years ago, he reached an age of 3 and a half years and we also need to clean his back and ears because he wasn't able to clean them by himself at old age, his hind legs also started to become paralysed.
This seems to be very common with old rats. I had several rats with weak hind legs which I had to feed and clean, including Oskar. Not all rats are like this, some are still very independent even in old age. The rats I have at the moment, Alfredo and Zouma, must be over 2 years now but are still agile and lively.
Awwwww cute. I've just seen this, it was posted 5 years ago. Oskar is over the rainbow bridge and in the meadow now you had a lovely life. And now you're young again. Play and be happy with your brother's and sister's. One day soon Nada will join you in the meadow.
Beautiful little guy! My last pair of girls lasted 3 and a half years before they got so slow and unable to keep themselves clean, got a bit wobbly on their feet. Eventually I had to get them put to sleep as one of them had gotten a tumour, I still get sad about them theyre so sweet to have. Ended up switching to guinea pigs just cause the life span is longer but I do miss rats!
Yes, the end is often quite sad, would be nice if rats would live longer. But they give so much back. I had guinea pigs before I had rats and would not go back to them as I find rats so much more interesting.

Your little Oskar looks the same as my Oskar. I have had my three little boys for about four months. Also your Bertie looks like mine too. My third one is a brown and white hooded rattie. All of them I believe are brothers and they get on well together. I have found out that Bertie has respiratory problems but otherwise he eats and drinks normal. He loves to be fed baby food while sitting on my shoulder and when he finishes his food he likes to give me a good wash all over my face then sniffing in my ear then licking inside them. He then settles back down and continues his snooze.
Nice. I hope you have lots of joy and fun with your rats. Respiratory problems are very common in rats, quite a lot of my rats developed them and often they were not really treatable. You just have to make life as nice and easy for your Bertie as possible to give him a good time. Good he has 2 brothers he gets on well with too.
Hi Nadine.. Thank you contacting me. Rats are such amazing little animals. It is so cute how they look after each other. My sister took Bertie out so he could have his dinner alone and as she took him out his home, Roland grabbed him and tried to pull Bertie back to his bed. My sister said to Roland that she was not going to hurt Bertie. Then he let go of Bertie and he waited at the cage door and would not move away until Bertie returned. When Bertie was returned both Oskar and Roland greeted him and ushered him back to his bed and settled down altogether and started to guard and groom him. Bertie loves laying on my shoulder pressed firmly into my neck and resting there with me singing to him and rubbing my cheeks on his body. I watch your videos of your gorgeous little boys every day and wish they were still there with you. You trained those lovely boys well to do those tricks they did but you can see they enjoyed doing them. Perhaps in the future you may get another mischief and train them like you trained Alfredo, Zouma, Charlie, Timmy, Bertie, Oskar, Alfie and little Theo. Weak hind legs seem to be common in old rats, especially in old males. Quite a lot of my rats had this problem but they still had quality of life for quite a long time. They just need more care and attention.
I just came across this and it made me bawl. This was the life of my boy Rocko he passed away in September. I miss him every day. He spent his last week never leaving my site. He passed away sleeping on my chest 🐀❤💎🌛☄🌟
I am very sorry to hear you lost your rat as well. Most of my rats were like this when they got old. My last rat, Zouma, always wanted to be near me and it was heart breaking having to bring him back to his cage for the night or when I had to go to work. This is what makes it even harder to say goodbye when the time comes. Part of the reason I don`t have any rats anymore now is that I could not cope with this anymore. I wish rats would live much longer.
Unfortunately I had to put Oskar down on Friday two weeks ago as he had a respiratory infection which got worse and worse. Antibiotics did not help. It was very sad but I tell myself that he had a long and happy life.
Nadine Mitschunas I'm very sorry to hear that, Nadine. You do get very attached to the last remaining member of a rat pack. We recently said goodbye to two girls, 2 years, 6 months and 2 years, 9 months respectively. Now we have three very young snips. Will never give up on these critters.
I remember my rat being 2,5 years old. It's so sad rats get old so fast and we must watching them just lying and breathing instead of running and jumping as they used to when they were younger. Breaks my heart so much
Yes it is sad that rats don`t live very long. At least we can make their life comfortable when they are old. I see the difference to young rats every day, Alfredo and Zouma, my two new rats, are all jumpy and lively and often run around like mad, old Oskar just wants his peace and quiet, good food and a cuddle.

Thank you very much for your comment. It was quite said that we lost Bertie, Alfie and Theo. Alfie was so active and lively still until in a matter of 2 weeks he deteriorated so much that we had to put him to sleep. I hope you can enjoy your rats for a long time still, especially your older rat Flash. Old rats have their advantages, you can cuddle them for ages sometimes and they don`t want to run around all the time :-).
Forgot to say, I already have 2 younger rescue rats, Alfredo and Zouma. I got them from one of the P@H adoption centres and they are about 8 months old now. I tried to introduce them with Oskar but it did not work out. Oskar was so stressed and Alfredo even tried to bite him so I separated them again. They are in separate cages now. I tried training the new rats over Christmas but they are not very interested, the only thing they learned is to come when called (which is the most useful trick). But I will persevere. So there might be some more videos to come this year.
I know what it feels like, I stopped having rats because one reason was their short life-span, I just could not cope with losing them after just a few years anymore.
Rats don't die! They go back to Heaven (where they first came from) and get a rehab, then come back to Earth for another gig (sometimes with their original human!) 🧡

When my rats get old, I’m going to make sure they have all the junk food they want before they pass.

Thank you for this sweet little video. I'm so sorry that Oskar is now gone. He and the other boys were so adorable, and your videos of them are heartwarming. I have enjoyed them more than I can express.
It always surprises me how such little animals can leave behind such big holes in our hearts. It's clear from the videos how much you loved your little guys, Theo, and Oskar and Bertie and Alfie and the ones who went before. You gave them a great life. I just wish it could have been longer, but perhaps they wouldn't be so loving and so enthusiastic about life if they didn't have to pack it all into such a short stay with us. I really do hope that we will get to see our ratty friends again some day.
Thank you very much for your nice comment. It was very sad to lose all of the Rat gang, and Oskar quite recently. They really are such affectionate pets which makes it even more difficult to let them go. I really wish they would live longer but you are right, their life is short but the time with them is such an intensive one you hardly have with any other pet (apart from maybe a dog).
I have 2 rescue rats now but I don`t do such an intensive training with them as I did with Oskar, Theo, Bertie and Alfie. I still play with them and we do some tricks but I need a bit of a rest at the moment.
I sometimes think it would be nice if there is something like a rat heaven and when I die I would see all my rats again there.
They sure do age quickly. At first they are young, energetic, and cute. And then a few years later they are in their golden years.
There's so much love here I can barely stand it. ❤
This reminds me so much of one of my pet rats I had some years ago, he reached an age of 3 and a half years and we also need to clean his back and ears because he wasn't able to clean them by himself at old age, his hind legs also started to become paralysed.
This seems to be very common with old rats. I had several rats with weak hind legs which I had to feed and clean, including Oskar. Not all rats are like this, some are still very independent even in old age. The rats I have at the moment, Alfredo and Zouma, must be over 2 years now but are still agile and lively.
I have two 7 month old girlies, I dread the day they cross the rainbow bridge... They mean so much to me, it's hard to imagine them gone.

Awwwww cute. I've just seen this, it was posted 5 years ago. Oskar is over the rainbow bridge and in the meadow now you had a lovely life. And now you're young again. Play and be happy with your brother's and sister's. One day soon Nada will join you in the meadow.

Beautiful little guy! My last pair of girls lasted 3 and a half years before they got so slow and unable to keep themselves clean, got a bit wobbly on their feet. Eventually I had to get them put to sleep as one of them had gotten a tumour, I still get sad about them theyre so sweet to have. Ended up switching to guinea pigs just cause the life span is longer but I do miss rats!
Yes, the end is often quite sad, would be nice if rats would live longer. But they give so much back. I had guinea pigs before I had rats and would not go back to them as I find rats so much more interesting.

Your little Oskar looks the same as my Oskar. I have had my three little boys for about four months. Also your Bertie looks like mine too. My third one is a brown and white hooded rattie. All of them I believe are brothers and they get on well together. I have found out that Bertie has respiratory problems but otherwise he eats and drinks normal. He loves to be fed baby food while sitting on my shoulder and when he finishes his food he likes to give me a good wash all over my face then sniffing in my ear then licking inside them. He then settles back down and continues his snooze.
Nice. I hope you have lots of joy and fun with your rats. Respiratory problems are very common in rats, quite a lot of my rats developed them and often they were not really treatable. You just have to make life as nice and easy for your Bertie as possible to give him a good time. Good he has 2 brothers he gets on well with too.
Hi Nadine.. Thank you contacting me. Rats are such amazing little animals. It is so cute how they look after each other.
My sister took Bertie out so he could have his dinner alone and as she took him out his home, Roland grabbed him and tried to pull Bertie back to his bed. My sister said to Roland that she was not going to hurt Bertie. Then he let go of Bertie and he waited at the cage door and would not move away until Bertie returned. When Bertie was returned both Oskar and Roland greeted him and ushered him back to his bed and settled down altogether and started to guard and groom him.
Bertie loves laying on my shoulder pressed firmly into my neck and resting there with me singing to him and rubbing my cheeks on his body.
I watch your videos of your gorgeous little boys every day and wish they were still there with you.
You trained those lovely boys well to do those tricks they did but you can see they enjoyed doing them.
Perhaps in the future you may get another mischief and train them like you trained Alfredo, Zouma, Charlie, Timmy, Bertie, Oskar, Alfie and little Theo.

Thank you. Yes, rats are very social animals, and it has even been proved they help each other even if the rat who is helping has no benefit from it. I wish you a very happy new year as well. I might at one point have some more rats but for the moment I am happy to just have my budgerigars.

My Louie is a bit older than Oskar in this video, but he's exactly the same. His hind legs are very weak and he loves getting attention
Weak hind legs seem to be common in old rats, especially in old males. Quite a lot of my rats had this problem but they still had quality of life for quite a long time. They just need more care and attention.

I just came across this and it made me bawl. This was the life of my boy Rocko he passed away in September. I miss him every day. He spent his last week never leaving my site. He passed away sleeping on my chest 🐀❤💎🌛☄🌟
I am very sorry to hear you lost your rat as well. Most of my rats were like this when they got old. My last rat, Zouma, always wanted to be near me and it was heart breaking having to bring him back to his cage for the night or when I had to go to work. This is what makes it even harder to say goodbye when the time comes. Part of the reason I don`t have any rats anymore now is that I could not cope with this anymore. I wish rats would live much longer.

Unfortunately I had to put Oskar down on Friday two weeks ago as he had a respiratory infection which got worse and worse. Antibiotics did not help. It was very sad but I tell myself that he had a long and happy life.
Nadine Mitschunas I'm very sorry to hear that, Nadine. You do get very attached to the last remaining member of a rat pack. We recently said goodbye to two girls, 2 years, 6 months and 2 years, 9 months respectively. Now we have three very young snips. Will never give up on these critters.

I remember my rat being 2,5 years old. It's so sad rats get old so fast and we must watching them just lying and breathing instead of running and jumping as they used to when they were younger. Breaks my heart so much
Yes it is sad that rats don`t live very long. At least we can make their life comfortable when they are old. I see the difference to young rats every day, Alfredo and Zouma, my two new rats, are all jumpy and lively and often run around like mad, old Oskar just wants his peace and quiet, good food and a cuddle.

Thank you very much for your comment. It was quite said that we lost Bertie, Alfie and Theo. Alfie was so active and lively still until in a matter of 2 weeks he deteriorated so much that we had to put him to sleep.
I hope you can enjoy your rats for a long time still, especially your older rat Flash. Old rats have their advantages, you can cuddle them for ages sometimes and they don`t want to run around all the time :-).
Forgot to say, I already have 2 younger rescue rats, Alfredo and Zouma. I got them from one of the P@H adoption centres and they are about 8 months old now. I tried to introduce them with Oskar but it did not work out. Oskar was so stressed and Alfredo even tried to bite him so I separated them again. They are in separate cages now.
I tried training the new rats over Christmas but they are not very interested, the only thing they learned is to come when called (which is the most useful trick). But I will persevere.
So there might be some more videos to come this year.
