    Les Paul Deluxe with mini humbuckers came out in late 1969. However none were shipped until 1970. I have a 69 goldtop deluxe with 3 pots dated '69 and 1 '66 pot, no Made in USA stamp. The stamp appeared in 1970.

    I have a 1970 Deluxe as well with the transitional features. It was originally a goldtop and then was re-necked and repainted Tabacco sunburst in the 70s. Awesome to see one factory original!!

    I have this guitars twin brother. Was my grandfathers. I've been told my whole life it was purchased in 1969.... this supposed fact doesn't guarantee the year it was made. But none the less it plays and looks like it must haveon the show room floor. God rest his soul... i sure wish I had more of a chance to pick his brain. He unfortunately died when i was 9 in 1997. I will cherish his guitar forever.

    These are great guitars ... I sold them brand new. The sales rep claimed that players were complaining about the noise of the P-90s, so they went to the mini humbuckings. Then they were all clamoring for the full sized humbuckings, so that changed too.

    This helped me date my 70-71 deluxe
    Another thing to note, most if not all 72 gibsons have the embossed covers
    Also pat sticker on the pickups stopped around 74

    I bought a Gibson deluxe in 1983 , it was an old beat up guitar, I no nothing about it apart from it sounds amazing, I may have to find out more about it, I'm intrigued as it has no serial number no dot on the eye, I wish I had knowledge, good work John !!!

    The first deluxe guitars were awesome. The gold top guitars my favorite. Looking back people realize how great those P-90’s are. I also love the mini hums…. To this day I still don’t know what year my black Beauty was. It’s been sold but I didn’t know then what to look for? The neck tennon I (if I had looked) 😤 would have told a lot Also like u say the volute. Mine didn’t have a made in USA mark, no volute, and I still remember the serial number 500995. Tim Pierce sold one about a year ago and it was just a couple serial numbers off. He said 1968/69 (the guy selling it for him). I couldn’t get him to take out the neck PU. It looked trashed close up, but the guy selling it said he couldn’t put the thing down! Mine was all beat up too. But. Til this very day it was the best playing guitar I ever owned…. Heck, I can’t even afford one now! How ironic…… lol. Hey, thanks for showing these guitars. Us older Gen X guys can sit and watch this stuff all day now….😄

    it is a 72 In 1972, the "i" dot reappeared on the peghead logo. ..full volute on yours also. the clown burst is also a tell. great guitar.

      Thanks for watching AD! I haven't had many Les Paul Deluxes but having this one is definitely going to look more carefully for others. The changes in features seem to be so random! It's fun to document them.

    Thank you for posting this video! I'm looking forward to seeing what the neck tenon looks like on my "76" as well as the potentiometer codes. I've been a huge fan of the Deluxes since I first heard one at the talent show when I was in 8th grade

      Thanks David! Yeah that was what originally drew me in to this guitar. It was so clean that I could tell no one did anything dumb to it! I didn't know about all the cool features until I had it on the ground. I won't forget this one for sure. Thanks for watching man!

  • @tylerrichman9
    @tylerrichman9 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Nearly at 1K subs. Keep them coming and your channel will surely be successful. I really enjoyed this one. I know it's not authentic specs but p90s fit perfectly in a deluxe. I prefer the tone to mini buckers.

      @truevintageguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tyler Richman thanks Tyler! The sub growth has been very encouraging. I love P90s too! I’m looking at a few gold top/P90LPs and I hope I get one. I’ll definitely post a video. Thanks for watching man! Cheers!

      Yeah I like P90s too but I have to say I prefer Les Paul mini humbuckers for lead cutting tone if I had to choose between the two. So best to have both lol.

    The guitar might have been a 72 because of the diamond shaped trim piece surrounding the bottom strap pin was a decorative feature used on some guitars then. Originally it was used/seen on the Trini Lopez model.

    Thought the sunburst deluxe didn't come out til 71?

  • @gtrslinger6262
    @gtrslinger6262 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have a 1969 Goldtop deluxe and my truss rod cover says "Les Paul Deluxe" in script. All the others I see just says DELUXE on the cover. So it's a bit rare.

    What year did they start making the deluxe Les Paul ?

  • @charleschadwick8042
    @charleschadwick8042 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I bought a '72 in '79
    for $400. The pots have 1956. Was told it was a leftover from when the humbuckers came out in '57
    A top ten luthier in the 70s told me to guard it with my life and only he was to work on it
    I dunno
    It's the best of my 7 pre '73 Gibsons!
    How do I send a pic.
    It is a hideously vivid red and yellow. Love it. Hate the color!
    Also have a 1980 burgundy deluxe
    Pots are dated 8/80
    It is not as perfect as the cherry pop!

    Does anyone know the year of Scott Gorham's Cherry Sunburst Deluxe ?

    • @scarcam
      @scarcam ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Scott & Robbo's Deluxes were bought new by Thin Lizzy management when they joined in '74, Robbo's is a tobacco sunburst which is still his main guitar, both assumed to be '73 guitars
