To me there are SO MANY surprising moments... a lot of deaths I didn't see coming, some returning characters, continuations on history from GW1 with the Cetre of Orr... the Champions of Primordus and Jormag... I don't know, I feel like GW2 as a story is so huge and full with turns around and surprising moments it is impossible to only make a top because constantly surprises me and makes me crazy . Also, about Arene's Death there were a lot of time between that and we saw what happened, fueled by also the stories of Caithe, Rytlock and Zafirah during that time and how they took the event, incredibly touching.
Agreeing with all of them ! Especially Aurene's Death omg, that was a stab into our hearts. Also one of my favorite "surprise/Oh Shit !" Moments was also the attack on Lions Arch. I couldn't believe Anet would really go out there and destroy the precious city Marriner did work so hard for to rebuilt. I was shook.
There are four sad deaths for me: Eir Aurene (as you note, resurrected) Almorrah Soo-won. Soo-won's death scene has the best VA acting in GW2. I can't think about it without tearing up.
aaahhh #1... what a time that was! All that build up just for the twist! Every new player will just spam chapters without hearing zafirah's poem, without reading the 3 "journals" on gw2's site, without even a slice of the feelings, theories and thoughts we build up over those months.. just like #5, that sudden black screen hit like a truck i like Blish more than Gorrik, and waited for some kind of AI stuff to bring him back, i guess i only can wish him luck
Yeah, I tell any new player that asks me about playing the story in order to "When you finish Season 4 Episode 5, to put "/wiki all or nothing requiem" into the ingame chat and read the three page that come up at the first results". Honestly there should be an auto ingame mail when you finish that episode that points you to them. They're such a huge chunk of lore. Heck the Rytlock one even alludes to Ryland in it.
Heck yeah, the Guild Wars 2 story is fantastic!! I especially love the worldbuilding, my favorite of which is probably the Sylvari. 🌿 The reveal that they were purified Mordrem was already mentioned by another comment, so I'll say my second favorite story surprise, which was the Pale Tree being attacked by the vine-dragon of the Dream/tutorial mission! The effects of this are pretty much brain damage that's lasted all the way until Janthir Wilds, and I'm really curious to know if they'll ever touch on it again-will she ever fully recover & play a major role in the story again? Will the Nightmare Court use this time to make a comeback? I hope it gets explored further.
Joko's demise and Aurene's death are definitely my favorite story surprises :D I am playing through GW2 with my sister and we are very close to seeing Aurene's death! We only meet once a week so I will use that week as a story buffer so we don't go straight into Aurene's resurrection.
Nice video, but personally, I would shuffle a couple of your choices, if it was me making this list. The major change I would make would be to put the death (eating of) Palawa Joko by Aurene as the number 2 best (and worst) surprise in the story arc. It was one of the few times in the story that I loudly laughed out loud while playing, followed by disappointment that Joko wouldn't be around in any future GW2 content. He had all the best lines in the story, and was the most entertaining villain within the GW2 universe.
The #1 moment really hit like a truck. I had to take a break and when I came back, I redid all my characters looks to have a black / mourning theme. I was that bummed! T_T
That list is great but my personal favourite surprise was finding out that Anise knew about the wizards the whole time and that she had a certain... intimate relationship with Mabon. I just live for the gossip tbh
Say what you want about the character, whether you think she's a good character or not... Aurene's death was one of the most shocking surprises that the story throws at you. Sad that anyone who plays it now doesn't really live with the shock anymore seeing as she comes right back to life in the next episode. Back in the day we were waiting like 3-4 months to see what happened next!
Joko's death I thought was absolutely brilliant, a real surprise. I miss him, he's one of my favourite NPCs and I haven't even played Nightfall yet. How Aurene came back to life was another of my favourites. Envious of all you being surprised by her death. Came back to game late and had that surprise ruined for me by players taking great delight in chat telling everyone she wasn't dead, that she comes back to life, the only thing I didn't know was how, now that was a surprise. Same goes with Trahearne's ending while playing Heart of Thorns when it was almost a meme for everyone to hate on him, player chat let everyone knows he dies and /waves fist at Arenanet for spoiling Eir's too by titling chapter 1 of Living World 3 Eir's Memorial in Hoelbrak.
Joko's monologue scene is my favorite Guild Wars 2 moment. I wish they did more with that though. Joko makes a good point about the commander killing the life force of the world but Anet kind of hand waved that away later. Kind of a shame as that struggle between saving the world by killing the dragons and dooming the world by killing the dragons was interesting and could have had a lot of cool ways to resolve it including more stuff with the Gods. I think if Icebrood Saga didnt get cut short and Anet not getting cold feet about the dragon saga story we could have had a really satisfying conclusion to all that. Oh well, hopefully the writers can reach that point of story telling again
I think that the Sylvari being spawns of Mordremoth been one of my favorite surprise.
Babe wake up, new Athis dropped!
Great video! Special mention for the death of Almorra, for me it came as a shock. Truly heartbreaking.

Honorable mention for me goes to the death of Eir Stegalkin during Heart of Thorns. What a game changer that was to the story line.
