  • Things have been a bit hectic since I returned to Southern California but I did get a chance to do a few checkout dives and try out the new camera equipment.

    Very cool. Laguna Beach sounds so exotic to us East Coasters.

      We’re hopefully getting better conditions here post thanksgiving so I’ll be able to show things off properly. We have a number of really cool dive sites around here. Sadly the cost of boat diving has gone up quite a bit so the days of doing a Catalina / Channel Island dive boat every few weeks is probably lost back in my employed days.

    gorgeous. Still diggin the idea of a kelp "forest." And the juxtapositions are strong: water with dry land, danger with domestic cheer (that view of the warm van door), noise of driving and noise of surf and the tinkling sound of bubbles. Nice to see those fish doing their together thing.

    didn't understand the scale of the beach till I saw tiny figure in red bathing suit at 3:38. Therefore those waves are larger than they appear to be. Like objects in mirror closer than they appear.

    That kelp looks awesome. I once took 2 padi courses on an island north of Honduras (Utila), and what you said about beginners using lots of air certainly was the case for me; one dive the instructor let me use his oxygen so we did not have to go up too soon...

    I think as you branch out, a good name for your channel would be Hiking and Diving, or maybe Above and Below. I think you've got a good and expandable niche, but the name of your channel seems outdated. You've outgrown the name, but you have great content and are a personable guy people want to follow. I wish you all the best and good luck.

  • @davidthomson802

    Scary, all of it. Especially when I realized that woman in the red bathing suit was only one foot high. Then in the next view she's disappeared.

    I love the dive footage Masochist. I am actually subscribed to a dive channel though I don't dive myself. They're rebreather instructors and such. I got interested in diving actually because of Mr. Ballen here on TH-cam. It's kind of dark but he tells all sorts of horrifying stories about people having accidents or getting lost or trapped during dives. And he was a navy seal diver himself and tells one hell of a story. So, he got me interested in diving and I would absolutely love to try it one day. The underwater kelp forest in your footage today is positively beautiful and otherworldly. I would love to be there diving with you and I trust you're a good teacher too.

    This was really cool! I've only been diving once in a pond. All I can remember was how fast the water temp dropped every 10 feet or so we went down.

      We get a thermocline sometimes but usually the water is just cold here. When I was in Thailand for my DMT you could see the cold water coming up at you from the depths

    1. Strange seeing Southern California highways that aren't gridlocked. 2. Do you ever find pirate's treasure on the ocean bottom?

    Fun video, Matt. Did you just film with ambient light? I always enjoyed diving Point Lobos and Monterey for the kelp and otters. Probably not doing that again unless I pick up a drysuit. I get real cold real quick in my old age. I need a 3 mil for 80+ water that I used to dive in board shorts and a rashie.

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes
      @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, left the lights since we were only down to about 30 ft. GoPro did quite a bit better than my old TG4.
      I keep having issues with the cold also. And this is still relatively warm. We’ll be down to the low 50s in a few months

      @@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes LOL… I have a TG4 with the Oly housing. Great for happy snaps, which is fine by me and my dive partner. It will be interesting to see the difference with a Big Blue vid light or something like that, mounted on a tray.

    Love the dive pix. What is considered “good” visibility diving of Laguna Beach?

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes
      @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say in my experience 15 ft is decent, 30-35 ft is about the best I've ever seen. If you jump across the channel to Catalina you get 40-50 ft.

  • @donrobinson5540

    Never been diving in kelp, just warm Caribbean water with great visibility. Yes, shore diving can be challenging. My last dive in Cozumel I got picked up by a wave and it threw me onto my left hip yielding a nasty bruise and abrasion as I landed on a coral head. Ouch!

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes
      @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love warm water diving but there’s some really neat stuff out here as well. Catalina is far enough off shore to give 50 ft vis and you get into massive kelp and giant sea bass. Worth the trip if you ever get a chance

    does this idea have some merit. get rid of van buy a pickup that can pull a light weight trailer also get rid of one other car. then you would have two vehicles, maybe both of which tatters would feel that she could drive

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes
      @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like I said if we did it again we’d get a trailer. But at this point we’re kind of committed to the van for at least a while longer. And we do love the feel of it.
