  • 26-year-old Emma Fillipoff disappears from the streets of Victoria in 2012 and has never been seen since. Was it murder, suicide -- or did she want to hide? In “Finding Emma” host Mark Kelley follows a mother’s determined journey to look for her daughter - and looks at how hard it is to find many of 60,000 people who are reported missing every year in Canada.
Using exclusive surveillance footage taken only hours before she disappeared, the fifth estate speaks to police, friends and family to piece together the story of Emma Fillipoff. With the family’s blessing, the fifth estate shares excerpts of Emma’s hard drive - thousands of pages of diary entries, poems and messages - to a special team of five expert criminal investigators, including an active homicide police officer, a forensic psychologist and a criminologist who pore over the evidence.
Since May the fifth estate also launched a social media “Finding Emma” campaign of Twitter and Facebook and on national television - and in this week’s program, Kelley tracks down many of the tantalizing clues.

My 35 yo son has been missing since Nov. 18, 2019. He has had schizophrenia for 10 years. How much does law enforcement value people with mental illness where I live? Joshua has been missing 4 months now, and so far no one has been interviewed, police first went to his apartment in January, they still haven't reconstructed his last day, and there are (big surprise!) no leads. If Emma can't be found after 4 yrs with dozens of podcasts, articles, and shows like this with millions of views, I'd better face up to never seeing my son again. Joshua Matthew Stewart, my baby and the most talented potter I've ever known: I love and miss him.💔

I can’t stand it when families say “they would never do that, they had so much to live for” sometimes when people are in their darkest days, they’re not running to share it.. even with people they trust and love. Depression can strike anybody, regardless of things that would make them happy. All possibilities should always be looked at even if the family says it’s unlikely.

Delia I agree. And suicide isn't necessarily a planned thing. Mostly it's not and that's why survivors don't understand it. Sometimes, all it takes is one event, ever so small to the rest of us, to tip someone over that edge. Or a growing dread and hopelessness about the future. And young people who have no children, partner, will be more at risk because there are none of those safety nets in their lives to keep them going through the worst of times. Emma seems to have been particularly isolated and therefore extremely vulnerable. Undiagnosed mental illness? Quite probably, Saffire....

+Sarah Drenth ... Dear Sarah: I disagree with your implication that there MUST Be "something wrong" with a person who commits suicide. Sometimes suicide is not motivated by emotional distress of any kind. For some people, suicide is actually a logical & a rational decision. I came to this awareness decades ago when an acquaintance killed himself. I told his lifelong friend that I always thought that this guy "had it together". The friend told me that this young man's suicide had nothing to do with "having it together". He simply "got tired of living". ... Art.Curator.2016@gmail.com

Mental illness seems to be a contributing factor in this case. As a matter of fact the 5th Estate did that story about the woman from Prince George BC who disappeared and in the end was murdered by her husband. But she had a history of mental illness and had disappeared a few times when she was younger. Then she met him and life seemed to improve for a long time. I believe she was bipolar. Emma May very well be out there somewhere. A real mystery for sure.

Emily, it’s not ludicrous. They are not reliable enough to be evidentiary. That does not mean they have no investigatory usefulness. Yes, someone may slip through, but as was the case here, the very fact the man of interest was willing to be tested and welcomed it helps eliminate him as a suspect. Given that resources are finite investigators have to have some means to help determine where to focus their time and energy.

Kyril J, A technology’s age does not reflect its efficacy. Most of the technology you use today is either 19th century technology or based on it - or older. You are so used to it you simply don’t appreciate it. Electricity, light bulbs, the combustion engine, the dynamo, the telephone, anesthesia, on and on. The list is practically infinite. The Narcissist is great at pretending to be caring and helpful and fool other people into believing that the person not wanting anything to do with them is Crazy or unstable when in Fact it’s the Narcissists who is Crazy and Unstable into believing that a beautiful Kind Person Should fall for them because of their delusional grandiose fragile ego. Too Many times it’s the Victim that suffers because a person couldn’t accept the word “ No”. Police need to recheck and reinvestigate their original persons of interest.

Even for those, who society considers not ‘beautiful’. Read up on it… interesting. There’s been studies. Read up on the problems faced in South Korea … societal demands to be beautiful in order to get on in life and subsequently the growth of the plastic surgery industry in SK. There CAN be problems for those born with beauty…especially when that beauty starts to fade. Defined character and resilience haven’t been developed due to the initial ‘smoother ride’. Applies to physicality too. Outstanding athleticism … then losing that with age can be hard to accept.

Her mother can't accept what it. As the mother of a girl with suicidal depression I know how hard it can be to see and accept. When you meet my daughter you will see a happy, beautiful, bubbly, outgoing, driven girl. Its like light radiates from her. People gravitate to her. Under the surface shes battling suicidal depression. I didnt see it myself. A teacher one day caught the slightest slip in the show my daughter puts on. Thank God she saw it for what it was and went directly to the school counselor. I credit that teacher with saving my child bc no one else had ever seen one of her slips. My daughter has built up her defenses so well even the people closest to her didn't know. The school counselor called me asap and I didn't believe it at first. I thought she had accidentally called the wrong parent. "Kylie? Beautiful, bubbly, outgoing kylie? No, that's impossible." It wasn't tho. It took a couple days of soul searching, thought, and grasping for me to see it could be my girl. The ones that struggle the most hide it the best. With that I called my daughter to my room. It took two seconds for her mask to crumble and she fell apart. Ive always been very close to kylie, she often sleeps in my bed even, and I had no idea how horribly she was struggling. Shes still fighting and likely will for her whole life but now we know what's going on and can help her fight. Shes not fighting by herself anymore. I was at the school today for a meeting. Changes for covid safety has caused her to have trouble again. Thankfully our school is amazing and was very receptive and proactive. Our counselor adores kylie and understands her well. The mother in this case is stuck in that place of not being able to see and accept. I understand that well bc I felt that too but I had to fight through that to see what I so desperately didn't want to be true. I had to so my daughter didn't become the woman in this case.

Kris Frazier Op didn’t say it was odd Emma didn’t want to face her mother. They said it was odd her mother wasn’t like “What? What’s going on? Why?” and pressing her.
Also, I was a heroin addict.
You can hide being a heroin addict, easily, especially if you don’t boot it and you sniff or smoke it. The people who deteriorate really fast are people who use IV.
I was severely addicted to opioids and later heroin for seven years and it didn’t “catch up with me” (to the point you’d look at me and think I looked like a drug addict, I mean) until the last year. Furthermore, you have to remember that no ones family wants to think “it’s heroin” or “it’s drugs”. So unless there’s a serious history of addiction where other family members are drug addicts, most peoples minds don’t go to drugs simply because of the “not my child!” (Sister, friend, whatever) aspect. Trust me. I saw this time and time again.
Not true for everyone, of course, and some people descend very quickly too (again, usually people who use needles, which, nowadays, doesn’t usually happen until people progress to needles bc heroin is powdered and potent now- not rock you need to melt in a spoon like in the 1970s lol nowadays they just add a little water and suck it into a needle) but I’m saying it doesn’t mean she literally couldn’t have her mom see her.
Also remember heroin makes you euphoric and docile. You don’t have the same standards is ability to have standards. It just always makes me laugh when someone sitting sober is like, “Ah yes she was on heroin, surely someone on heroin would be ashamed and run”.... totally forgetting that the entire thing about being on heroin is that you’re HIGH.... it’s not like you have total logic and your senses about you, nor do you have the same view of the world.
In other words, all your standards go out the window. You wouldn’t avoid family.... you try to hide the addiction.
This girl was severely paranoid. I’d say that’s the main and most important thing here.
Whether with reason or not, whether in part due to drugs or not, she was severely paranoid to an unrealistic degree.
Even the way she’s pacing in the last video of her.... that isn’t drugs, that’s paranoia. If it were drugs it would be more erratic (the kinds of drugs that make you paranoid are uppers which make you jittery and noticeably high if you’re on enough to be legit paranoid). Not to mention if the issue was mainly drugs, there would be people who’d used with her, dealers, she’d probably have gotten a record, etc.
Even out of addicts, there are good and bad people.... there would be people, especially people who’d since become sober, who’d say they’d used drugs with her. Also they’d be the most likely to have seen her last bc when you’re on drugs you need drugs every day. It’s not like you can just up and go away. When I was on drugs my biggest fear was someone inviting me away for a week or even a weekend bc then I’d have to come up with enough money to buy however much drugs I needed to get through the week and not make it totally obvious I was withdrawaling.
Furthermore, heroin adds up FAST. Even a low level daily user needs $50-$100 a day..... a DAY. That’s $350 a week JUST on heroin for a pretty light user. The physical may take a while if you’re not shooting up, as I said earlier.... but all the different areas, especially money, catch up with you FAST and are extremely obvious unless you have an endless money supply.

And as far as I'm aware immense emotional distress like the divorce can actually bring on things like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. It seems really likely mental illness was the reason she vanished. I imagine she's dead, either by suicide or delusions leading to her dying from exposure or self neglect after traveling off somewhere. If she's alive she's probably homeless and somewhere extremely far away and extremely mentally ill too.

There are so many possibilities in this case and I hope that Emma is found. In her journal, one line stuck out to me specifically. "I love my mom, but I don't want to hurt her." Could that be suicide? Possibly. Or could it be something else. I've heard multiple times that Emma was very sensitive to people, and at times, a little too giving. I'm the same way, I've shut down most of my social media, and I give myself peace by being alone, by withdrawing from people, and there are times where I'm so overwhelmed, I just want to disappear. So this is a jump, but maybe Emma was so afraid of disappointing people, that she found a way to disappear. Maybe that's why she's not found. Maybe she took her life in order to disappear. It's strange that if she wanted to seclude herself from everyone, that this guy in a green shirt would be her boyfriend. Could he have been after money? Possibly. Could she have had a stalker? Possibly. Could she have changed her name, her looks, etc? Possibly. At this point, the way I see it is that she either wanted out and took her way out, or realized that her mother would be hurt even if she did commit suicide, or ran off with someone else and disappeared, or ran off by herself and disappeared, or if worst comes to worst, someone forced her to disappear. Could she have been a victim of a kidnapping? Could she have been a victim to herself? Could she have been a victim to her mind? It's been 8 years and people deserve answers. The three girls who got kidnapped, broke out and called the police and got out ten years later. I can only hope that the same thing happens to Emma. So many things could have happened and I just hope that they find her safe.

there are mix emotions...you want to go away...cut out all comunications...but deep down...you need to Know...that you are not forgotten...( she called her mom ) ...things..went too big for Emma at this point...she called to let her mother knows she is there...so..just don't forget i am still here...the things is...i think...when you want to hide...to go away...you dont want to be forget ...but when there was a missing person unit working on her...as a missing person...she can't face the shame of not being missing...she can't handle what the public will say about her...the police questioning...her family desperates search..knowing...she is not missing...she can just have walk away somewhere else...because she don't know how coming back without being judged...questioned..hated..
    I am not psychologist..or shrink...
i am just someone..who can relate little bit with Emma...if she is alive...don't expect from her to come back...the one call she gave her mom...was her best effort to come back..she just can't...this is what i feel about her...
but i got the feeling she ended her life...because of her writings...she left traces of her...(she is no longer missing )..in her mind ...
    i

Mother/daughter relationships can be very very difficult. Especially for a free spirit and a conventional one. Mothers want more for their children than the children want for themselves. When your child stalls or fails to achieve, many mothers struggle to like their own child. They LOVE their child unconditionally - but can’t understand why they can’t thrive in the way they were raised.

I’ve always been very intuitive and a free spirit with empathic heart... creative from painting to poems etc etc... after listening to Emma’s words in her poems notes, In my opinion she left earth. Anxiety creates fears you either fight or flight... People that are empathic and she seems to fit the bill struggle with life because we see it through rose coloured glasses and when we see the world for what it really is we struggle internally, she just fought the depression at an early age then me which I find I’m going through now, well for the last couple years. I wish not to live on this earth no more, the other side is far more beautiful. I’m struggling within myself. Free spirits, empathy usually are more prone to mental illness... Her poems words to me are a clear sign that she portrayed happiness and everyone thinks we are happy and people are drawn to us like magnets, but inside is not the same once the rose coloured glasses come off... we are great for hiding our true feelings as we hate hurting others. This is just my opinion but she reminded me of myself just at a different age.

The man who took the lie detector is very suspicions to me. When mark asked him if it was just a coincident, that he turned up in the same city as Emma, is eyes looked to the ground as he answered yes. All the other questions he looked mark straight in the eye's. Also Emma felt she was being stalked. This man admitted to Emma's farther he stalked her before. People can pass lie detector's, when lieing, it takes a lot of training the brain, but can be done. Don't rule this man out. Hope Emma's found so the family can get closure.

He may well have lied and actually known she was there, he may have been pursuing her but committed no crime. He could have been either embarrassed or concerned that he would have a crime pinned on him which in America, is a valid concern.

he doesn't seem upset whatsoever, even snickering a little when answering tough question. this suggests to me that he knows where she is--dead or alive. it also suggests he is some kind of emotionless sociopath.
he seems primarily concerned with clearing his own name with no concern shown towards his puppy love idol... he's not a stalker anymore, he followed her by coincidence? VERY Suspicious
I feel very scared for the next girl he dates/stalks !

Do you really think when you ask someone if they're suicidal and homicidal, they are going to say yes? It's common sense. That guy did the right thing by calling the cops. I’d imagine with Canada being so vast it would be a lot easier to disappear than Ireland where I am. Just a pity her mum never managed to get to her on time as it sounds as if she had had enough with life. Really feel for her family here as there’s no closure without knowing what happened to her.
