Also expected, that knife in 3V will be considerably harder to break than in most other steels, the handle would probably snap or crack before even the stick part of the tang does. The shorter a hunk of 3V is its even harder to break side to side, let alone with the shock going toward the top or bottom of a shorter tang or blade. With the cable "shock absorber" added , its well suited to hack thru meat and bone😂I used my Laredo to chop 2 inch oak up and its Carbon V, also batoned it very well. 3V properly heat treated and tempered will laugh that off barring stress risers
From what I’ve heard, people were not having problems with the cable breaking as much as the faux wooden handles were breaking, I got a 3v Natchez and Laredo, love the balance and weight already have so many choppers so figured I’d try them, plus I prefer using my axes for chopping. My theory is the g10 should hold up very well if need be. I just love the lightness of the knives, and the beautiful flat grinds. We shall see, I’ll probably do some test videos with them screw it.
@@mgsoutdoors Yeah everything I've seen and heard its handle failure with the Laredo or Natchez, or downright foolishness, they aren't Trailmasters or Ghurkha khukuris
I wouldn't chop with it, even though it holds up, but a cable tang is exactly what you want for a fighting bowie. did you notice while chopping the lack of shock your hand feels upon impact compared to a full tang ? the cable acts much like a string damper on a bow to reduce felt vibration .
@@Eddie-uf8oo I have so many full tang knives I finally justified (somehow) buying this and the Natchez, no regrets, I think the issues with the handle breaking are “fixed” from utilizing g10, lot stronger than the wood or faux wood used before
@@mgsoutdoors yeah, I just don’t know how much confidence I have in a cable tang,I would think a rat tail tang would have similar balance advantages while still being solid at least. Generally I really like cold steel alot and have many of their knives (2 trailmasters, 4 4max's etc). However, I am and have been shocked and severely disappointed by their decision with the Larado and Natachez bowie knives to build them without a full tang. That is a show stopper for me. I have three laredos two Natchez one trail Master they all work fine. when I see some people chopping and there angle of attack is off ten degrees and then they blame it on the knife it all depends on how you use them . but the laredo and Natchez are Fighting weapons first not camp knives
I agree that a full tang construction would be stronger than a cable tang construction, all other factors being equal. However……. I think you’d really REALLY have to abuse the hell out of that knife in order to break it. Even WITH it’s cable tang construction.
@@cuchulain1647 I would imagine the weak point is at the bottom of the blade, where the tang begins. And the cable portion lower in the grip isn't really relevant. Get the natchez if you want a bug bad ass bowie that is frankly now practical

There was not much shock at all! The handle was really smooth too. It wasn’t as cushy as kraton, but it was really nice.
You’re causing me to reevaluate my above comment. Not saying I’m sold, but it does raise an interesting point.

Lynn Thompson said that knife was not designed for that!!!
He said the cable tang is designed to absorb shock. So there is some shok

You need more mass for that full tang busse I just got one it's only 8 inch blade but can chop

Get the Trailmaster!

It's an Invicta.
With as many people who complain about the knife not being a full tang you would think the new owner of GSM would improve the knife and give it one.
I would rather them make a different Bowie that to change the Laredo. The folks that complain don’t really have a proof of their problem.
