- -In honor of Tom Kennedy, game show host legend who passed away today at age 93, I thought I'd put up 6 minutes of audio from two episodes of his most successful game show "You Don't Say!" which ran on NBC from 1963 to 1969. The game was a reverse of "Password" in which the object was to go for proper names or places by giving clues that were part of the answer but unlike "Password" with its one word clue you would give a long descriptive sentence and leave off at the end your "clue word."
-Very few episodes of "You Don't Say" survive. These audio fragments are from two shows from March 3 and March 7, 1969 with Amanda Blake ("Gunsmoke") and Vin Scully as the celebrity guests. Vin, as Tom notes, was just about to begin hosting his own NBC game show "It Takes Two" . The voice at the end explaining a couple of the incomplete moments of game play is not mine. It was on the original recording when I obtained it some 20 years ago along with some other lost game show audio.
RIP, Tom Kennedy (1927-2020).
NOTE-I now realize the dates are incorrect in the title part. The first part is March 3, 1969 the latter part is March 7, 1969.
"Commander" Blake & Vin "Scolding"...I can tell they were stretching for jokes by Friday's show.
I remember when this was on weekdays at 3:30pm(et). And Rex Koury's LIVE music!
"'YOU DON'T SAY!' is A RALPH ANDREWS PRODUCTION! This program was pre-recorded."
Ralph Andrews had a lot of interest in promoting Vin Scully's upcoming game show IT TAKES TWO, since Andrews produced it.
But NBC kept him for the major league baseball game of the week until 1989.
@@facebook51ify Vin didn't join NBC for the game of the week until 1983. He was strictly known as the Dodgers voice back then (though he appeared frequently on the World Series because the rules back then meant local announcers did the World Series telecasts).
I wish the organist had gone into a few bars of "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" after the contestant guessed Spencer Tracy.
