  • @theafricanjumbee. when you are an employer, you have the burden of making tough decisions. you will deal with things that normally you wouldn't have to. People depend on your leadership, and you must get it right. one of my employees complained that she was sexually harassed. she complained that she was scared to approach me because the person in question is very close to me. after hearing about it, I think I handled it the best way I could. you may agree. please let us discuss this in the comment section. #afrocaribbean #tanzania #afrolatino #africanamerican #nigeria #ghana #kenya #zambia #namibia #zimbabwe #tanga #mbeya #ethiopia #fyp #youtube #daressalaam

My brother, much respect for having the courage to address this issue to the satisfaction of all parties. Sexual harassment shouldn't be condone anytime or anywhere regardless of relationships or affiliations. It's dehumanizing and no one should be subjected to a toxic and harmful workplace environment. Friends that are harmful to your business will eventually be harmful to you.

I think you did the right thing seen that this was the first instance between them. I would bring them both in the office and ask them both what took place. If the male was guilty of the accusation and he amit it, I would give him a stern warning. I would ask the young lady if she want to pursue the matter or take it further if she said no, then I would reassure her and tell her that if this happen again that you will support her a hundred percent and there will not be a second chance for the young man he must go.

This is all part of your journey of greatness. You handled it well. The fact that you noticed the gender imbalance in the first place was your 1st indicator that something like this could happen.
The only thing I might do differently would be to leverage the respect that your #1 has for you. In Africa, long-term employees don't only work for money. They often also get fulfillment from their importance in the relationship.
So I'd call my #1 aside and say something to help him connect the dots, like:
"You know all we've been through together, and how much I rely on you.
You helped me build this business from scratch. How could you do something to jeopardize it?
You represent me when I'm not around. Why would you do something that could make me look bad?
I know you don't want to damage what we've built, or bring me shame, right?"
If he's as reliable as you think he is, a talk like that would probably make him think twice in future because even if he doesn't respect women, he won't want to betray you again.

Hey sorry to hear that, I have been coming to Tanzania so many times since the 1999 update, but never ever got malaria and I never used any malaria tablets. There are so many ways to protect yourself from malaria, I hope you get much much better soon 🙏.

I believe you handled it well!
Typically in the USA, a formal investigation is done where we would individually ask each party involved their side of the story (We do take statements from witnesses of the incident as well, if applicable). This way we have an close to accurate report of the reported incident vs what had actually happened. This is often the better approach, cause it could turn into he said she said conversation otherwise. Please note, depending on the severity of the incident, we would seek counsel.
Your not in the USA or Canada, and as you stated, the culture and people/organizations in Tanzania may have yet to fully implement/embrace proper sexual harassment policy's and procedures.
My advice would be to create or a adopt a sexual harassment policy from the states and have all employees (new and old) review and sign off that they understand the policy and the consequences of not following said policy. Having this won't only protect you, but your employees as well. Like as you mentioned, your coworker friend who may have been naive to proper workplace conduct as it pertains to sexual harassment, due to cultural norms.
Overall, like previously stated, I believe you handled it well! As an fyi, I work in Human Resources and am familiar with incidents of this nature.
Also, as someone who has watched a majority of your videos, but have not really left a comment, I just want to let you know I appreciate your sharing Tanzania journey and experience.

Well done brother, tough decision but it’s important to set the standard for your business. I think you made a good decision, sexual harassment can happen anywhere. It’s important that they are consequences for this type of behavior.

    • @theafricanjumbee4057
      @theafricanjumbee4057  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@shell5988 I will not condone this type of behavior. I chose to handle it as I did because the behavior is not spoken of, nor is there any form of education about it. I chose to use the incident and my decision as an aven to educate. We will educate, and changes and workplace policies will be given to each employee and implemented. Currently, we have nine employees. As we grow, which we expect to. New employees will be given a pamphlet on harassment in the workplace.

@shell5988 Thank you very much. It wasn't easy at first. With a strong sense of why I moved to Africa and having the right people around me who were able to teach me how to conduct business in tanzania, I was able to move forward from earlier failure. After failing at previous business attempts, my best Tanzanian friend suggested that I should purchase rice from his village and resell it in dar es salaam. His village is one of the regions where rice is grown in tanzania. After that, we started looking into other products we could buy from the villages and resell them in dar.
Hard work, determination, the willingness to succeed, and understanding the reason why I came to Africa are my driving force.

Calling them for a meeting to discuss the event and get a lasting solution, was the right thing to do.
Maybe, to be clear on what you expect from your employees, you may need to create a checklist on the do and don't for the employees. You can make every employee sign that they agree to follow the checklist. More still, you can add on the consequences of not adhering to it.
