This game sucked so hard that it caused Richard Dreyfuss to develop bipolar disorder. I mean, just watch "What About Bob?" and tell me this game didn't leave a mark on his psyche.
@@christopherthibeault7502 Well at least it caused Dreyfuss to return in the Piranhas remake to spoof his Jaws role. Not the greatest movie, but a splendid cast.
It might be boring, it might be extremely repetitive, but I have such a soft spot for this game, my grandma had a NES in her basement (hooked up to a commodore 64 monitor of all things) and my cousin and I would play so much Jaws every Xmas and Thanksgiving, leaving the console running for two or three days just trying to beat it. Good times.
My grandparents had this game and an NES for me and my brother to play whenever we visited as kids. Very nostalgic for me. But yeah, while I think 'bad' is a strong word, the simplicity and repetitiveness are a bit of a drag on the game when the NES was capable of more variety.
Actually there is a game called Seaquest made by Activison on the Atari 2600, which has exactly that: a scuba diver, who has o harpoon sharks (and submarine). Obviuosly quite repetitive, but still enjoyable for a round or 2. Was released 1982 iirc.
My moms cousin owned this game when I was little. I remember when she takes me over to his house I would have a blast playing jaws. Now I own this on emulator to relive my happiest childhood years.
First NES game I ever played, all the way back in 1987. Not the best on the system, but boy-oh-boy do I have a lot of nostalgia for this one. I still play it every now and then these days.
I once owned this game on NES long ago, like in '89. It is so much more enjoyable watching it with your adorable comments. As always, I was so entertained and enjoyed the video. Thanks Eren for making some of the least enjoyable games fun.
I actually liked this game as a kid. I rented it a couple times. I remember playing this with the NES and tv hooked up on top of the kitchen table. I was sitting at the head of the table playing this for hours because our carpets were being cleaned and I couldnt walk on it, so my dad knew how to keep me off the carpet lol.
I've always liked this game. Had it as a kid and didn't even see the movies, just had the game with no context besides people knowing who Jaws was. I think what it could've used is an item system shop that let you buy stuff that let you explore new areas. I dunno if they were going for "RPG Elements" but it almost has them, it just that little bit and maybe some fine tuning on the EXP and difficulty curve.
I remember my friend got to pick any game he wanted out in the catalogs that year, and he picked out this game. I remember him calling me on the HOME PHONE to tell me to come play. I went over and he opened the box etc to kinda rub it in my face about his new game. I remember watching him play with this excitement slowly draining from his face and turning into regret. I really didnt think it was insanely terrible, but I'm very glad I saw my first "test run" on the market and ALWAYS had rented beforehand. I think I ended up getting Ninja Gaiden II or something.
This kind of semi-surreal content is exactly why I always recommend this channel; who needs a Jaws expert when we've got Erin? ...although the thought of someone taking themselves WAY too seriously, never taking off their captain's hat, even to shower is too good to pass up; I don't think I'd mind if we had both. 🤔 I vividly remember the first time I played this; it was at my friends' house, and I asked them if there was another level after that. They said they didn't know, but I always pictured something that was Autumn-colored, for some reason; something like if you'd turn your old CRT's tint knob just slightly toward green.
Oh hey, I know you from Backloggery! Fancy meeting you here of all places. This is one of the few Let's Play type channels I watch. Erin has a genuine fun/silly on-screen presence that's really charming.
"Weee.. sailing around on my boat". Heh, gotta love Erin. I R Jaws expert! Sadly, no hat though. Lesse.. there was a shark. There was this guy with glasses who smoked (it was the 70's, so i guess that's what people did). Oh and there definitely was that infamous scene where you had to collect shells. hARhARhAR. Ok so maybe i am not an expert. I saw the movie once back in the day.
Had your channel pop up in my recommended for your Castlevania 64 video. Glad I checked out your vids. Always good to see Jaws get some love. Not that you'll ever touch this game again but you can speed up and slow down the plane in the bonus game with the d-pad. Happy New Year
Also I can see why this game has its fans despite the hatred it gets. It’s a simple and addictive “high score” game, and it plays a lot like an old Atari game.
Awesome video, Erin! I remember my mom being into this game when it came out. I liked the game but it wasn't great. My mom loved video games like Duck Hunt and The Adventures of Lolo series. 🕹️👍
Big fan of this game! My favorite LJN game haha. Before they had a reputation, I remember finding enjoyment in this and BTTF. There was something addictive about the conch shell collecting and upgrading your boat mixed with the shooter underwater gameplay
The only tip I can give you is that while the very top of the water you’re invincible to Jaws, if you move just a single pixel down from there you are still invincible and you can hit Jaws with the gun.
Erin, you are a great educator. I bestow that honor upon u because about half the games in your vids I've never even knew existed. Props to u and your channel for being the video game version of PBS 👍🏿👏🏿
This is an instance where the game manual is vital. Just playing cold, you have no idea what’s going on or what the rules of the game are. Ah the good old days I love that you’re having such a good time with the game l! 👍
Both Jaws and Friday the 13th on NES have gotten a lot of excessive hate. They are far from the best games on the platform, but they're far from the worst either. Between the two, F13 is a better game overall, but despite the simplicity and repetitiveness of Jaws, it's a perfectly fine quick time-killer.
Friday the 13th is actually just a pumped up remake of the Friday the 13th game, made by Domark, that appear on 8-Bit computers like the C64 or the ZX Spectrum in 85 or 86. I really really loved that one (on the C64)
I saw this game all the time at the video store but the back never looked good enough for me to rent. That newer Jaws game seemed kinda fun. I want to play that one.
For some reason this was one of my favorite games as a kid. I think it was because once I got the hang of it, I could beat it in twenty minutes or so, so it was a nice "go-to". The trick at the end is to hit the shark in the white of its belly. You have to wait a second or two after it leaps up for it to turn and expose itself to your attack. Does this make me a Jaws expert? I do have several pirate hats...
The game doesn’t say it, but it’s clearly based on Jaws IV. The plane and the boat climax are straight from that film, which also came out around the same time as this game.
Hi Erin. You look great and gorgeous with that captain's hat!!☺️ I buyed this game about 15 years ago and I was so excited to get a Jaws game because I liked the movies in my childhood, and I wanted something more about them, but when I played it the first times I was disappointed because of the same reasons you said, especially for being so repetitive and its difficulty. I feel that it needed more variety of stages and some adjustments to the mechanics for making a better game. I think the more enjoyable part of it is the bonus stage, because of the difficulty to be accurate. It was basically an Atari game in a console of the next generation in my opinion. It's not bad, but needed more work to be good. By the way, to this day I never earned so much experience to get the submarine. I die very easily when I get boring, hahaha
The music on the map screen reminds me of Marble Madness. At least I think that's the game I'm thinking of. Was JAWS developed by Rare? I know they ported Marble Madness for Milton Bradley.
Jaws was actually developed by Westone, the company behind the Wonder Boy games. I hear the resemblance to Marble Madness though. The basic melody is similar and the tempo is pretty close, but it doesn't have the same sound font as Rare's games.
AVGN would PROBABLY be an expert; but he doesn't like this game as much as you do.😉 😆😆😆 Anywho great video as always Erin!👍 I look forward to future content.🙂❤
I liked this a lot back when I owned it. The one part I disliked was the final battle because I thought there needed to be a better clue when Jaws was in range.

I decided to go check. Friday the 13th was developed by Atlus, while Jaws was produced by Atlus but developed by a studio by the name of Westone. Definitely not the same team, but the involvement of Atlus in both products could mean they directed the design of the Westone game.
I think the problem with this game is that it's more like a mini-game. There's not enough variety, just grind for shells until you're ready to kill the shark.
Game is pretty bad, but I loved it as a kid. I recently bought it for $5 bucks at a local retro store. I remember it being difficult as a child, but now I can beat it in like 5-7 mins like its nothing.
this game is so simple and pleasant, it's kinda dumpy but it's relaxing. dying and getting leveled down is so cruel, I'll just end up resetting out of rage instead of leveling again. for a movie license NES game, we definitely got worse p.s. thank you for refusing to say "baby *****" on principle.

Lol.🤣
This game was actually made by Westone, the same company that co-developed the arcade versions of Wonder Boy and Wonder Boy in Monsterland. It just doesn’t add up………
I'll never forget that classic scene in the movie where Hooper swims around and shoots fish and jellyfish and collects conch shells and stars. 😄
This game was based off of the sequel Jaws the Revenge where Mike Brody swims around, doesn't shoot jelly fish, and collects conch shells.
And then Hoagie showed up three movies early to bomb the hell out of the ocean in an attempt to rid the world of all the jellyfish.
This game sucked so hard that it caused Richard Dreyfuss to develop bipolar disorder. I mean, just watch "What About Bob?" and tell me this game didn't leave a mark on his psyche.

This game actually had quite a bit of potential. If they just tweaked the design a bit more! Of course hindsight is 20/20 as they say.
They could added more scenes like a Underwater Wreck or some caverns. Maybe more harbor locations. Something to that extended the prior gameplay.
Yeah, that's a good point. It could have easily been a little better with a bit of variety here and there.
My grandfather got me Jaws game when I first came out and it's one game I will always keep cause it has a lot of meaning to me .
I had both a guinea pig and some hermit crabs as a kid. They both make great pets. H.C.s like to be taken out of their enclosures and walk around.

That face at 6:22 for something in Jaws for the NES is just the best. Loved this game when I was a kid and the soundtrack's still stuck in my head.

I like the concept that in order to fight Jaws, you need to enter the ocean and rampage smaller sea animals to train.
Awesome, always liked this one, simple as it is; oh also left and right speed up and slow down the jellyfish bombin’ plane; anyway congrats!
Baby Jaws absolutely needs to be a thing now. I paused the video and googled that 🤣
