Just a few notes about the amazing Rod Laver. He won 198 tournaments in his career. For 16 consecutive years (from 1960 to 1975) Laver won at least 5 tournaments every year. That was a total of 192 titles in 16 years - which is an average of TWELVE titles per year. Between 1961 and 1968, Rod made the finals of 22 of the 23 Grand Slam tournaments that he played. He was an amateur up to the end of the 1962 season (in which he won all 4 GS titles. He played on the pro tour for the next 5 years (1963-67) and made the final of every pro slam event during that period - except for one when he lost in the quarter finals (they had 3 major pro titles back then per year). And then he made the finals in 6 of the first 7 GS events when the Open era began in 1968. In the ten year period of 1960-69... Rod Laver made the finals in 30 of the possible 34 major tournaments that were available for him to play. He made it to the finals in 88% of the major tournaments over that ten year period... and won 19 of the 34 (56% of them). He won ALL of the major titles that were available for him to play... in three different seasons 1962, 1967 and 1969. Rod Laver dominated the game (for ten consecutive years) at a level that no other player can come close to reaching.

I'm rooting for Zheng not only to win her first AO title but to become world's #1 female player and the first Asian player to do so someday. She's a great ambassador of the sport and a complete package of personality, charm and communication skills ... a dream image model for sports and lifestyle brands with more than a billion supporters globally!

Tbh it’s less likely for someone like Zheng to know Rod Laver given she’s Gen Z. I had no idea why she’s being asked that question post the match. Rod laver is a legend no doubt about it but his era is way back.

It’s good education for Zheng. And for gen Z. She is playing at AO and the stadium name is Rod Laver. Right?

@@BoymanjusriShe’s being very respectful there and a classy athlete who’s been having great interaction with the media and fans. I don’t see any issue. Not sure what triggered you to make this comment.

I Rod Laver was playing today, he will not be even in the top-ten 100 ranked players... He was great but when tennis was played by mostly amateur enthusiasts belonging to three or four countries. The professional travelling trouppe was made of a few players (Pancho González, Ken Rosewall, Lewis Hoad, Frank Sedgman, Jaroslav Drobny, Pancho Segura Cano, etc... It took many years for players from East Europe to start emerging... Yes, Laver was a good player. at that time, against far lesser opposition... But, we must be honest... Only now, 60 or 70 years after his achievements, we can say tennis is a global sports.

I watched the Laver era which included, Lew Hoad, Rosewall, and Newcombe. Hoad was my favorite. They didn't have the huge metal racquets that are used today. There are so many obnoxious players today that I stopped watching tennis in general. I haven't watched tennis since Li Na retired. Now I'll be watching tennis again because of Zheng.

Chinese female players are such big fighter
Unlike the male ones giving up easily in the middle of a match out of hopelessness like Junchen Shang
