Amazing skill and knowledge! I have had a seven foot piece of Osage Orange in my garage for twenty years. It has a fine grain and a lot of little knots. I wish I knew a bow maker to give it to. Michigan, USA Detroit area
Definitely looking forward to this series. How do you work out the thickness and thickness taper for this style of bow? I get that it changes on each piece of wood but is there a general rule of thumb to start?
We tested several self bow and sinew bow designs that were equal in draw length, design, and pounds. The self bow pound for pound was faster. However the sinew was faster when drawing it back further to 55 - 60%. That is where sinew shines.
Traditional Bowyers Bible volume 1. The man's name is Tim Baker and he did all the science and numbers on bow building like the question you asked. Two similar shape/draw weight bows backed vs self bow the self bow out preforms because backing adds weight.
Does anyone know how Native Americans made good shooting bows without all the measurements? Not sure if an unevenly shaped bow affects anything such as reliability or accuracy?
Nothing really besides more reflex in the sinewbacked gullwing design. Many of our bows were the exact same as other tribes. Like the "Cherokee bow he made more fits a Hopi bow or southern Cheyenne bow.
I can see "he who has no concern about the viewers results", hasn't bothered to answered their questions. Makes me question any of his instructions. Jmo
Is this a mathematics course? Algebra? Or is it a bow making course? I mean you said!!! you were going to show us how to shape a bow, and you didn't do it
You’re great talker very easy to listen to. Great bowyer as well.

Thank you Jeff. Love your work and videos! Keep em coming!
Man thats a great looking stave!
Bravo I will be tuning in to the series
Looking forward to this.
COULD YOU DO A VIDEO ON HOW TO SHAPE A LONG BOW
Maybe I missed something but what kind of wood are you using and what are the measurements of the stave?.thanks
That looks to Osage orange (Hedge tree). I think mention Oasage.
How do you create the desired draw weight and length for an individual
Привет! Молодец! Что за дерево вы использовали? Сколько сушили?
Thanks a whole lot. I've made one and plan on better ones.
great vid thank you ,
How much the draw weight?
Where do you get that Osage performs better as a self bow than when backed with sinew?

@@PrimitiveLifeways that’d be a good video

Thousands of years of trial and error and oral tradition. Fathers taught their sons what their father taught them!
Nice and short
What’s the difference between this design and your recent Lakota bow?
Sinew backing and reflexing, comanche bows were not sinew backed, just selfbows of osage, short narrow

excellent
why did the Comanche not recurve their bows?
