I live in the Netherlands and for my dutch class I had to do a report on Dutch literature. I wasn't paying attention and the deadline was in a few days. I didn't even pick a book to do my report on, so I looked on a list and saw that the golden egg only had around 94 pages so I read it and it was surprisingly good. Really liked the concept and themes.

I saw the original without it the ending being spoiled and was shocked. Like when I saw the end of The Wicker Man from the 70s the first time. I can’t imagine either film with a happy ending and they shouldn’t have them.

The Dutch version is so perfect & haunting that I still remember it decades after first watching it. Fortunate is is available on TH-cam as some years ago in the UK a TV station advertised "The Vanishing" in its schedule only for me to discover it was the awful Hollywood remake. British TV Critic Mark Kermode described the original in his review of both adaptations. The Dutch 1988 version he described as "The Banality of Evil"; the 1993 version as "The Evil of Banality". Sums them up perfectly.

I’m from the Netherlands, and i’ve read the book “The Golden Egg” in high school for my booklist. I’ve seen both film versions of the book, and “Spoorloos” (1988) is in my personal top 10 of favorite movies of all time.
I’ve also donated through crowdfunding to finish the movie “Dark Blood” with River Phoenix, and for the Dutch documentary “Sluizer Speaks”, which hasn’t had a wide release.
According to George Sluizer, what happened was that the film company (20th Century Fox) wasn’t happy with the original ending, and demanded a different ending to please American audiences. It was the time that Rupert Murdoch was the big boss of Fox, and he started working with memos which said what people could or could not do or say on TV.
So Sluizer took his loss and made the movie anyway. It was never his decision to change the ending.
    Cheers.

The rewritten ending in the remake is completely perplexing. I want to believe it was studio interference rather than a willing choice by Sluizer, but maybe I'm being too kind.

I love the original. Its a masterpiece. So i went into the remake knowing it couldnt possibly hold up. I heard the ending was sanitized and immediately knew that meant the boyfriend would be saved some how. But what i thought would happen was (which i think would have worked so much better) the daughter or wife some how stumble upon something, or catching him in the act or w.e. But i was sure the ending would tie back into the killers wife and daughters finding out the truth. But instead we got the literal last minute superhero ending. Im amazed the same director did this to his own work. And a dumb american audience is not to blame. Only a hack takes his masterwork and screws with it like that. Im almost insulted for Sluizer. I just watched it and totally forgot Sandra Bullock was in it, which isnt the type of VANISHING the director was going for i dont think. In the original i was shocked that we never see her again. SHOCKED. Like people who saw Psycho in theaters.

Spoorloos is subtle, disturbing, terrifying, mercilessly tense, and the ending just seals it, never releasing that tension, leaving you wondering and upset.
The remake is none of those things, it is obvious and bone headed, and the ending leaves you laughing at its banal absurdity.

This is like comparing The Wicker Man (1973) to the remake. It's like shooting fish in a barrel!
I have to say, I really thought the actress who played Saskia in the original Spoorloos was lovely (and charming, yes). I really felt horrified at what her character had been put through. Also, at least the 2006 Wicker Man didn't change the ending, it just turned up the hysteria to hi-octane levels. The Vanishing 1993 version had the same bloody director as the original. Was it the execs at Fox Studios' fault? At least things turned around two years later with the devastatingly bleak Se7en (1995).

I know everyone here will hate me for saying this, but I quite enjoyed the remake. I liked the overly dramatic tone and laughably predictable happy ending even. I can't say it is a better film overall than the original of course, but I quite enjoyed it all the same. I view the films as two entirely different genres with different messages and personalities, just wearing similar plot lines. I like them both equally but they really don't compare to one another.

I really enjoyed both films for what they both offer. I think the remake was changed as to give the audience a new experience. the original had already been made and the difference was needed to give it it's reason to exists. An exact copy wouldn't be desirable to artists and audiences. The changes also make them better. Nancy Travis was great in it. Kiefer delivered a solid performance. I think most people underestimate Bridges take on the character. I found him realistic and disturbing.

    • @geslinam9703

I respectfully disagree. The remake didn’t hold anything original. It had the typical American ending, good prevails over evil, the hero walks off into the sunset with his love. Yawn. There was the usual over explaining and dramatic music as well. I would have preferred the same ending, because it was the ending that made the film so amazing, like suddenly all the pieces come together in that final moment and it’s like a kick to the stomach. It’s that dark and bleak ending that made the film so memorable.

The American Version is SUPERERIOR to the Original in every way. I heard from reviewers like this guy Say, Oh You have to watch the original! It's so much better". Yea...IT WASN'T.😂 It was low grade, bad camera angles, mediocre acting. The only thing it has going for it was the, I guess realism of the end. Which obviously Hollywood understands audiences don't particularly like the bad guy winning at the end. I can get that, in an artistic idea of truth in a bubble, but that's a short straw to hold onto😂. Originals are usually the Better Versions, but sadly not in this.

I actually like both versions. I feel like the remake effectively creates a brooding, isolated atmosphere, where it seems like characters are constantly on the outskirts of civilization, surrounded by vast stretches of highway and forest. The original had that as well, but I feel like it is a little more effective in the remake. I also think that the girlfriend is an interesting addition, in that she isn't an entirely positive presence; in a sense, she's a counterpoint to Barney in a malignant way; both are in a sense, fighting for control of Jeff. Barney controls him through Jeff's desire to know, whereas Rita's need to have Jeff for herself creates a counterpull. She's not entirely sympathetic to Jeff's situation and seems to never get over her jealousy regarding Diane. In the finale, we see that she can, in fact, be just as ruthless as Barney himself. If the original is about a man consumed by the desire to know what happened, I think the remake is, in a sense, about a man struggling for individuality, locked between two personalities that seek to control and dominate him.
