    Sir Kevin, You sound great on the 120/1,how does this mouthpiece compare to the small chamber Meyer mouthpiece You more recently tried? Thanks

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Believe it or not, sound concept wise the 120/1 and the small chamber Meyer are pretty darn similar. The real open 120 facing on the Berg, focuses up the sound (IMO HR Bergs are a bit too spread out). The Meyer small chamber gives you that focus even on the smaller tip openings, so you don't need to work so hard! But the Meyer definitely gives a bit more roundness, that classic jazz tone, whereas the Berg has less roundness and a more contemporary sound IMO.

    I preferred your sound on the 100/1 the most, fat sound with the most core and edge to it, awesome tone!

    Are these the standard ebonite mouthpieces? At the BL website they only show the standard and the "grained ebonite" mouthpieces and the metals. Also, how do you specify 120/1 90/1...? When buying from a shop in-person?

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for the comment! Yes these are the Standard Black Ebonite mouthpieces.... I am a bit confused by te second question but. When ordering at their website I believe you just fill out the tip, chamber and facing details. So 120/1 M or 90/1 S. 'M' and 'S' are the facing lengths, I did not specify the the facing length in the video because honestly the difference is not noticeable at all. Actually some 'M' facings play like 'S' and vice versa. The 120/1 I use is an 'M' facing and the rest are 'S' facings. I hope this helps

    can you please tell why on a berg larsen 110 metal mouth piece is so hard to get sound . and would a 80/0 metal mouth piece be better ? thanks

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there. Well on alto a 110 is quite a large facing. You may want to lower your reed strength. But yes an 80 berg would objectively be easier to blow than the 110 with the same strength reed.

    Are these the SMS or M facing length? Thx

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 120 is an M facing and then rest are SMS.. in my opinion the facing length doesn't seem to be too consistent between labels and doesn't really make much of an impact on sound and feel.

    can I ask a stupid question?? I have a silver berg larsen 90/1 that I can't really get a note out of...some people have told me it is a tenor and some people said it's a alto..what is it????...I both play saxs OK but a pro trumpet player... I want a metal mouthpeice for both sax's alto and tenor that I can play rock thru to cabaret on . I am a loud player but only 52 kilo female ??

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm, well hard to tell what saxophone the mouthpiece is for without looking at it. Both tenor and alto models can come in 90/1. I am a bit baffled by your question. Are you putting this mouthpiece on alto or tenor?? An alto mouthpiece will not be able to even fit on a tenor. And a tenor mouthpiece would usually be far too big to fit on any normal alto saxophone neck cork. The fact that you cannot get a sound out of it could be many issues. One being the facing is too large and you would need a much softer reed strength. Or simply the mouthpiece is a dud, in very rare occasions a Berg Larsen piece can have a very uneven facing curve/tip opening and can render the piece unplayable.

      @@KevinBene thank you a million times for the quick answer whowy...yes I persisted with new reeds etc and it is playing on both sax's (remember I am a trumpet player) on the alto it fits perfect but goes a long way in ,no cork left showing but is in tune on the tenor it dosnt go in far enough but still plays in tune how the reed sticks over the tenor mouthpeice edge at least a centimeter which tells me it must be an alto....I have asked three players here and they didn't know haha...if the tenor reed hangs over so far (1/2 inch) would you say thats not normal?? thanks heaps ?

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like an alto mouthpiece. You usually don't want to put the piece all the way on the cork until there is no cork showing, will play sharp.. but it should be able to go completely on. And yes the reed shouldn't hang off the end of the mouthpiece. I am guessing it is the back of the reed hanging off and not the tip.

    Hi Kevin....your sound is amazing. Could you please tell me what type of facing the mouthpiece you have has? in the Berg Larsen site they offer two kinds, the SMS (french type, short facing and more pronounce curve) and the M type (American type of facing, a little longer facing and less pronounce curve).
    Thank you!

    Hey kevin I really like your instruction style ...
    Can you do an altissimo demo for tenor sax or direct me to a good one ?...including finguring and reed and mouthpieces to use
    Thanx

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Clifford! So there are a lot of references on TH-cam for altissimo on the tenor sax, but I will be putting up a video on this topic eventually since you are not the first to ask! Here is a reference that gives basically every fingering for each altissimo note, helps if you can't seem to make any one fingering work: wfg.woodwind.org/sax/sax_alt_4.html . As for your set up, I could definitely help you with that if you want to email me! kevbenesax@gmail.com Thanks again for the comment Clifford.

    Hey! I was just wondering what mouthpiece would be best for jazz type? I do a lot of growling and etc!

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, any of these mouthpieces will do just fine in a jazz setting. If you are big into growls and other nuances I would say a bigger tip opening will give you a bit more flexibility with those nuances. In my opinion the 90/1, 100/1 or above would suit you well. If you haven't played on the jazz mouthpiece I would start with the 90/1. Hopefully that helps!

  • @ckrynock777
    @ckrynock777 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you have any recommendations of a metal piece over a fibred mouthpiece? That would be in A120 - 1

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Clifford, I am guessing you are asking between metal and hard rubber mouthpiece? Well in my opinion I prefer rubber mouthpieces and recommend them to my students, to my ears they seem to have a more balanced sound. But metal mouthpieces will give you a more brighter, metallic and brasher sound and if that's your thing go for it! Now I will say that the 120 tip opening is quite tough to control, and if it is altissimo you are after I would recommend a smaller tip opening to have easier control. A 105 or 110 would be my recommendation. Also, I am not sure how familiar you are with the Berg Larsens and if it's the size '1' baffle you definitely want, but again a lower number baffle (meaning more baffle in the mp) tends to be harder to control and can develop some bad habits. I usually recommend a baffle '2' to my students who are interested in the Berg Larsens for pop and jazz playing, and then switching if need be down the road.. Just wanted to give you all my thoughts, again I don't know how developed you are as a saxophonist so take this with a grain of salt! I updated the links in my description above to include some of the mouthpieces you would be interested in, would appreciate you using those links if you end up buying. Will be no extra cost to you but I will get a commission, just a small gesture to help me out! I would be curious what you end up purchasing in the end, keep me updated!! kevbenesax@gmail.com

      Hey Luis Ochoa ! Thanks for the comment. It is possible to get the more custom tip openings, 110 and above on alto if you order it straight from the Berg Larsen web site. Hopefully this answers your question.
