  • Went out fishing for the first time since last year. Caught nothing on the Dodder so I wandered down to the canal and got a nice pike. I tried a jelly worm then switched to a little spinner. Then the little spinner got stuck in a f***ing tree so I had to put a bigger spinner on.

Excert from " The Biography of Dave Allen" by Carolyn Soutar
" The Tynan O'Mahonys' home, Cherryfield, had a great view over the Dodder River and back towards the Dublin mountains. " We used to cross the river by stepping stones back then. All of us went trout fishing and swimming in the river. It was real country round here back then. Templelogue village only had one shop " remembers Paddy O'Toole, a neighbour and friend of Dave and his brothers. " We would take the dogs off rabbiting in the fields. Johnny had a smaller dog, Tuppence, that he had rescued. It had gone down the waterfall at Templelogue bridge and couldn't get out, so he jumped in and saved it. That was the type that John was. "
I don't suppose that the wier/waterfall that you've filmed could be the place where Dave's brother rescued Tuppence?!

@@Lee-nh5bb That sounds like Firhouse Waterfall, also known as Balrothery Weir, in Templeogue. The M50 bridge traverses the Dodder just a little further downstream, next to the footbridge.

@@fishreact Thanks for that! It looks really nice around there, but I suppose it's changed a lot over the years. Is Delaney's near there at all?

@@Lee-nh5bb Yes, Delany's pub is across the way, on Knocklyon Rd.
It's definitely changed a lot, it would have been mostly green fields a few decades ago, but now, with the M50 motorway and all the new housing projects that have been built in the last few decades it's mostly built up now. The area around the river is still beautiful, though, the trees mostly shield you from the sights and sounds of the city so you still feel like you're in nature.

      @@gordondarker4073 Licences and Permits
In general a licence is not required to fish for trout in the Republic of Ireland - except in the Loughs Agency waters in counties Donegal and Louth as well as within Northern Ireland. The majority of waters are owned either privately or by the State. Many are leased to angling clubs or associations. A fishing permit issued by the owner or the lessee gives the permit holder the right to fish for set periods ranging from a day to a season.
