Your videos are helping me communicate with deaf customers! I was able to communicate with a deaf customer today and he even helped me sign correctly when I forgot some! I loved seeing him smile and being able to have a small conversation while he waited for his food and I hope to see him again! I am also thinking about going to school to be an interpreter!

Have you heard of condition that the blind have and with sleep? Fascinating. Farting would certainly catch my attention! I have another question. I have seemed to notice that lack of an audible laughter for deaf people. Why is this? I thought that laughter was an innate sound and not learned.
So my big problem is syntax. But I think I'm getting it... you kind of have to say the sentences as if they are in backward order from English... kind of like how Yoda speaks. Would you agree with that? (at least so far in the lessons. I'm sure sentences get more complex).

+yleineping BOY is like grabbing onto the brim of of a baseball cap (hat), DEAF uses an index finger and touches the cheek near the ear then near the mouth (or vice versa but usually mouth to ear), HOME touches the tips of a flattened "O" hand to the cheek near the mouth and then near the ear. Quick question, is it "okay" to spell things incorrectly? For example, "Sriracha". Can I just spell Siracha for the sake of time, or should I spell the whole thing (not in the context of practicing my finger spelling, just in general)?

I think the other name is tempura, it's flour batter, with some use bread crumbs mixed with butter eggs and milk. just dip the meat or whatever in it and cook in oil.
Well gyoza is kinda like a dumpling fried in oil that looks like ravioli, where you stuff them before you fry them.. where as tempura is more like how you'd make a chicken nugget... i.e. make a batter and dip the stuff in it before you fry it.

Nabiyah, I teach all of my instructional videos and in-person lessons at the university (my day job) without voicing. I was born hard of hearing and become more Deaf as time goes on. The problem with voicing is that if you voice to someone they assume you can hear (and/or understand them if they voice to you) and they start talking as if you were a Hearing person.

Hello Bill. I think if you said out loud what you are signing or saying in sign language it would be better. Because people that can hear, can understand and learn much faster and easier.
While I can certainly understand how using voice to teach ASL would seem like a good idea to many people, there are issues (problems) with using voice to teach ASL that outweigh the benefits: 1. Grammar: The grammar of ASL is different from the grammar of English. If you voice while signing you will end up using English grammar instead of ASL grammar. 2. Mouth Morphemes: Quite a few signs use specific mouth shapes or movements to convey or modify meaning. If you are speaking while signing you will be unable to utilize these mouth morphemes. Some signs use mouth phonemes which do not necessarily convey meaning but do help articulate the sign clearly (by that I mean, there are signs for which the use of the mouth shape makes it clear which sign is being used, for example "late" vs "not yet." I am not talking about mouthing the English words -- I'm talking about very specific non-English mouth shapes that are different from the English word. 3 Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students: Many of my students are learning ASL due to hearing loss. A voice-based teaching approach would be ineffective for them (in addition to being frustrating). 4. Equal Access to Communication: If I used voice in my classroom, my students would mistakenly assume that I'm Hearing and they would start voicing questions or comments to me. Since I am Deaf/hh I would miss many of their comments and it would be frustrating for all of us. Thus it is much better to maintain a visual-only communication environment in the classroom. 5. Eye-training: Hearing students (students who can hear) who want to become skilled at understanding a visual language need opportunities to actually engage in visual reception and processing of linguistic information. Conducting class in a visual modality insures that students are indeed "turning on their eyes" and engaging the pathway between their eyes and their brain for language processing purposes. A voiced ASL classroom is like talking about a bicycle. A signed ASL classroom is like getting on that bike and peddling. 6. Habit avoidance: Hearing people who engage in simultaneous signing and voicing (sometimes referred to as bi-modal communication, simultaneous communication, or "simcom") tend to drop various small (but important) signs or parts of signs. The Hearing person feels that their communication is effective but what is happening is they are shifting the burden of communication to the Deaf person who must then engage in lip-reading and second-language grammar processing to make sense of the message (while at the same time making mental corrections for the dropped signs). 7. Culture: American Sign Language (and other natural sign languages) are fundamentally tied to the Deaf Community. We Deaf people respect, value, and appreciate visual communication (much more than voiced communication). Curricula and teaching approaches that use or rely on voice are held in low regard by the Deaf Community. A "Hearing" ASL 1 instructor who uses voice to teach is handing their students a crutch. Then when that student gets to ASL 2 with a Deaf (non-voicing) instructor the student's brain is unprepared for instruction in the visual mode and the student (without his/her crutch) struggles in the class and blames the ASL 2 teacher. At the end of the semester the student gives the non-voicing ASL 2 instructor a low evaluation and the ASL 2 instructor loses his/her job (which leads to anger and resentment). Then Hearing ASL instructors (and others) wonder why Deaf people are not enthusiastic about (or outright opposed to) Hearing people teaching ASL. ---------------------------------- [So, for those Hearing people reading this who are thinking about becoming ASL teachers, I encourage you to ask yourself, "If I couldn't hear and couldn't voice -- how would I go about teaching ASL?"]
Brendan Kloos ummm, he's deaf you ding dong, he wouldn't pronounce it right. And besides, with out the voice it makes it a lot more of a challenge for the student, therefore it sticks

At the end of the semester the student gives the non-voicing ASL 2 instructor a low evaluation and the ASL 2 instructor loses his/her job (which leads to anger and resentment). Then Hearing ASL instructors (and others) wonder why Deaf people are not enthusiastic about (or outright opposed to) Hearing people teaching ASL.

[So, for those Hearing people reading this who are thinking about becoming ASL teachers, I encourage you to ask yourself, "If I couldn't hear and couldn't voice -- how would I go about teaching ASL?"]
Brendan Kloos ummm, he's deaf you ding dong, he wouldn't pronounce it right. And besides, with out the voice it makes it a lot more of a challenge for the student, therefore it sticks
