You mean I can't just stick my elbows out like I'm doing the chicken dance and start spinning to become an invincible cyclone of elbow strikes?

    1. Just the tip (that's what she said)
    2. Being too far for effective footwork
    3. You let your guard down to throw a strike
    4. Don't get fancy, it's a spear like strike, not a ballroom dance. Unless you are very well trained
    5. No angle, you'll hit their defense or miss a good shot if you throw randomly
Good video. I agree that these are things I notice when I practice

Once when my local police force visited my high school to talk about careers, one of the police sergeants said that she once "sliced open" an attacker's throat clean using her elbow, with many of her colleagues confirming her story. She always said that using your elbow is a great way to confuse and do very high damage to attackers if done correctly. I miss that cop lady, she had bad-ass written all over her XD.

Thank you very much for uploading this video. I have one question though. Is it advisable to condition the tip of one's elbows the way one conditions the bones of one's forearms (with a wooden stick or a sharpening steel, for example)? Until now, I mostly refrain from conditioning the tips of my elbows, because I am afraid that I damage my elbow joints. Thank you very much in advance for taking your time to answer my question.

Kickboxing helped my brother a lot. He was really happy go lucky whenever you’d see him until the kids at school started picking on him all the time. He’d be at home upset at just the idea of going back in to that school the next day. I hated seeing some one so excite about life just defeated.
He and I bonded over MMA and I had been taking some kickboxing lessons for 6 months. I’d been enjoying it so I suggested taking some classes too. Not really to fight but to gain confidence in himself and to get comfortable with his body.
Anyway long story short he took classes and I saw his confidence come back. I was happy for him. Unfortunately he used some of his training on a few kids at school and got in a lot of trouble. The parents decided not to press charges (thankfully) but he lost his job and he’s likely not going to be allowed to teach again. I’m happy he got his confidence back.

Another great video Shane. I always teach people to train hitting the bag at their own head height (or that of their anticipated opponents) or greater. Training like that & then fighting someone your height is like training with 1.5 oz bag gloves for a fight where you have to wear 12 oz gloves or like training at low elevations for a fight in Denver. It just makes no sense. If you are talking about striking your opponent at their cheeks, nose, the eyes or the eyebrows, they would be at close to the top of the upper "Z" on the bag printing, but where you were illustrating throughout the video were strikes at the top of the "Z" in Zebra on the bag, which is only at about your upper chest height. Like I said, great video, just treat the bag like a real opponent, including the striking height of your training.

Hey Shane, a guy at my gym said don't hit with the tip of your elbow because it might break, contradicting Tip #1.
Does this depend on what you're hitting with your elbow? As in maybe if you're going for the face hit with the tip, if you're hitting the head don't? Or is that advice for people who haven't trained elbow strikes? Or is that wrong? Any thoughts?

Kenny Florian was the original wizard of sneaking in sharp elbows on guys. He ended several fights that way when his striking was sub par.
