Which Mic was your favourite? Please let us know below! Download the tracks here: producelikeapro.lpages.co/251-mics-level-match-multitracks-form/
No one is my favourite. Guess im not s 251 kind of guy. I think nr1 is warm audio. I did not like how it handled the vocal transients and esses.
@@Kenneth-F what do you think the others were?
@@Producelikeapro thanks for the tracks ❤️ now to go figure out which is which 🫣🫣🫣🫣
I have a preference for numbers 1 and 5, the first one a bit more compressed and smooth and the last one more open and flat. I did not like 3 and 4, which I found too muffled. All in all, maybe number 1 was my preferred one, for sure depending on the sound source to be tracked.
I can't pinpoint which is which, but here are my favorites (posting before analysis).
Female Vocal: Mic #2
Male Vocal: Mic #2
Guitar: Mic #3
Drum: Mystery Mic
Great Job as usual Matt and PLAP!
1. Telefunken Elam 251
2. Universal Audio Bock 251
3. Cirlce Audio EVO
4. Warm Audio 251
5. Microphone.. Maybe the Bock Audio 187? Or Akg C414?
#1 is Telefunken ELAM 251. Sounds open, fantastic transparency!
What did you think was all the rest?
I also liked #4, but #2, #3 and #5 I didn't like, compared to microphone #1. They sounded somewhat with less transparency and I didn't like their tone as well.
I saw a video of the Circle Audio version, and I was totally blown away by how amazing it sounded. Not only faithful, but frankly better in tonal character than the original ELAM.
Which one do you think is the Circle here?
@@Producelikeapro I'd say 3!
@@aleksamrkela831 it was number 1!
I enjoyed your #Telefunken 251 mic "shootout". On first listen my fav's are 1 & 4, followed by 3 & 2 on vocals, but I need to dl the tracks to listen without TH-cam compression to confirm. YMMV. My guesses are 1= Warm Audio, 4 = Circle Audio EVO, 3 = Telefunken ELAM, 4=Brock 251 fwiw. I would have loved to heard the TF-51 thrown into the mix. Look forward to the big reveal. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing!
@@Producelikeapro What was Microphone 1?! I love it
Mic #4 was my favourite
Thanks! What do you think it is?
What do you think the others might be?
i liked 2 the most, 1 was close, 3 sounded good on her voice and the OH i did not like 4 and 5 sounded very different which makes me think it's one of the ones that clone with software like the UAD or Slate one. idk which is which i would guess 2 is the og because it felt familiar
1. Warm Audio (top end is not as smooth as the others to me and its thinner than the others)
2. Bock (liked it very much. My 2. favourite)
3. ELA (darker/more vintage sounding than the others)
4. EVO (was my favourite on male vocals so I hope it's correct since I'm thinking of getting one myself)
5. maybe UAD Sphere or Slate ml1 (recorded way more of the room than the others)
Thanks ever so much for sharing!!
So Lukas it was the Warm you preferred! It will save you A LOT of money!
@@metalman3227 yeah but i wont buy the warm since i dont like it in other comparisons. Im probably getting the beesneez bn 251
I think I'll just pick them in order of ascending order of preference from least preferred to most. Then put that in approximate price order. 5, 4, 2, 1, 3. I'll completely guess 5 is a Warm Audio WA-47. 4 is the Warm Audio Audio WA-251, 2 is Circle Audio, 1 is UA Bock 251, 3 is ELAM. 3 was my favourite, which I'm guessing was the most expensive one, but hoping is the most affordable ;)
Great shootout! I personally own a WA-251. Absolutely love this mic! Will have to listen loads to attempt to figure out which is which 😅
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
This is the way to do it make everyone use their ears it's great practice.
Agreed 100%! What are your guesses?
@@Producelikeapro I honestly thought they all sounded great. Couldn't say which was which.
1. Great transients with definition but still a bit of nice glue, less mids compared to the others
2. More glued, and more mids compared to 1
3. tiny bit more mids and bit less glued compared to 2
4. Least glue, most highs
5. close to 4 but a bit more glued and more highs but less harsh
Loved number 1 the most.
My guess that 2 might be the Warm Audio have no experience with the others sadly.
Thanks for sharing
1 - Circle Audio EVO
2- Warm Audio 251
3- Bock 251
4- ELAM
5- no idea! Austrian Audio?
Thanks for guessing!
I guess similar . I thought 1- warm and 2- circle audio , my fav was 5 follow by 3 and 4 .
The best of the best video again PLAP team and Warren. Thanks for all the hard work. TBH my goal is to own u47 and 251. Maybe down the line, c800g. I am saving up to buy upton 251, flea 47 and stam SA800 because of the price point and reliability of the modern take of clone microphones.
Can't really tell based on tge drum track but my _guess_ based on vocals;
1. Warm
2. Circle Audio
3. Ela M 251
4. Bock
Thanks for sharing!
1) Bock
2) OG 251
3) Circle Audio
4) Warm Audio
5) My first thought was a u47 just because it's also a highly sought after mic. But probably a mystery modelling mic.
Thanks for sharing!
Really Great shoot out ...For Me on Each element Mic 4 seemed to have a Deeper sound more definition in the lower Mid range ..and Mic 5 seemed to have the most Air top end. For me My Favorite on Voice and Guitar Mic 4.
I guess the 5th is a Slate mic - buzzy, sss-sy, and muddy at the same time + tiny in comparison to others.
1 & 2 are my fav.
2 - orig 251?
3 - WA - sound muddy
4 - also darker, but I like it, might be orig, but might a cope, too
Thanks for sharing!
I definitely prefer the format that tests equipment based on wherever it sounds best vs trying to match placement/settings. Thats a way more real world scenario.
It’s also hard to choose sometimes because it’s easy to immediately like whatever’s a touch brighter; or we focus on the difference between two things back and forth, so the midrange might stand out more than just listening with a small break in between.
I thought all the mics worked well on different sources. How they stack or take eq would be the real deciding factor for me.
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Ok I try a guess : 1-circle 2-UA Bock 3-warm audio 4-elam 251 5-lewitt 440 (this one could make sens when I read it on previous comments). I Hope 3 whas not the original, I did not like résonnances in it nore the noisyness
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
I really don't care to identify which mike is which. Depending on what was recorded here is my preferences:
FV #3
MV#4
Git#4
O/H #5
Mic 1 Natural - however was muted on guitar
Mic 2 - Hard Pass! No on everything.
Mic 3 - a mid coloration that worked on everything - good all-rounder
Mic 4 - HF bump that provided detail at expense of Mid Saturation
Mic 5 l- like mic 4 except more HF detail. For me only had value on O/H
My pick overall - Mic 3
#1 Circle Audio 251, #2 Elam 251, #3 WA 251, #4 Bock 251, #5 UAD Sphere
Thanks for sharing!
UAD is a good guess. forgot about it. and I own one. lol
It's interesting seeing how personal preferences play into mic choices. Matthew like the second mic, which sounded more sibilant on vocals and emptier on the guitar to me. The 4th mic sounded more resonant in a displeasing way. 3rd mic sounded amazing, very controlled, with that tightness I usually describe as "capsule compression". I've heard the Circle Audio before and I remember it sounded more controlled than an Elam, and the Bock was a well rounded mic without any obvious things to point out, so based off of that I'd guess:
1: Bock
2: ELAM
3: Circle Audio
4: Wa 251
5: Has a certain scratch and less bottom, with a drive that feels 47ish. The first thing that came to mind was a Warm 47, and I think it's one of their best executed mics. Austrian usually sounds more open, Lewitt sounds more forward, at least the models I've heard.
as long as capsule is same backplate holes design in CK-12 and made of 6 micron German Mylar Mic will sound good. No need the most expensive mic... I got a Rode NT-1A Capsule changed with Advanced Audio AK12 capsule and diffrence is night and day... everything is smooth not harsh in mids, pleasing airy top end its all there bassy tones and chest tones of my voice is present but sounds big and natural now. I highly recommend them! Do not throw your old mics they can be your undiscovered treasure for you to discover
They all sound almost identical, i think no 2 is Elam 251 and the last one sound like Chandler Microphone
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
all a c12/251 sound... one of the greatest large condenser microphone
Mic 1 was my favourite overall across the different sources. I have no idea which mic it is.
What do you think any of them were? Thanks for sharing
@@Producelikeapro I haven't used any of these brands before so I'm clueless.
I think 4 is the Warm Audio. It has that strident and spiky top end.
What’s your favourite?
Have you even used it? I feel the warm is dull or maybe a better word less open compared to a vintage ELA M 251.
@@Producelikeapro #2 is definitely my favorite.
@@cristopherjohansson1323 No, l’ve just heard demos. I almost pulled the trigger on buying one but I kept hearing something in the top or upper mids that I didn’t like.
@@2grandbaby854 I demoed one and didn't like it too. Their C12 though is amazing!
Great video, wish you had included the TF-51!!
Matt just demonstrated if you know what sound you are looking for you can set up
just about any mic,
select a preamp, move the mic to taste then dial in the sound you want and bam! lol
I hope that’s the real take away - these mics all have their place and own their value, but mic positioning goes a long way!
Number 5 mystery mic is my favorite across the board. Maybe a Pearlman 250?
Thanks for sharing
Reveal video will be Thursday. I said “next week” in the video… and was supposed to edit that. So, yea, Thursday.
Haha yes!! In two days! Woohoo
@@Producelikeapro please don’t keep us in suspense!
Where is the reveal video?
@@Producelikeapro where is the reveal video, pleeeeeease
My goodness, I never thought this channel would take me to my neck of the woods, in Pompano Beach, FL, of all places. Never heard of this studio. I really need to get out more !
Yes! Hugely famous studio! Ha
Which mics do you think are which?
@@Producelikeapro Honestly, I don't have any experience with any of these, or tube mics, for that matter, to be able to venture a guess. I just enjoy your channel. I'd say everything sounded excellent, although that ride cymbal sounded a bit understated, and would probably not cut through most of the kind of music I make.
Powerstation is a great place - great facility and great people. Won’t be the last time you see me there.
@@steverok67 thanks for the honesty! I really appreciate it!
This is more for my own reference so I can't go back later and change my mind...but I liked the first one the most. Two and three sounded a little phasey to me. I liked 4 on first listen, but then as it started to feel too pokey the longer I listened. No idea what 5 could be, and I think it sounded fine but probably not my favorite choice.
, 1# warm audio solid mic , 3#Bock more solid , analog vibe , 4# Vintage Telefunken polish already mix ready , 2 #Circle Audio work horse sound , very balance #5 Sphere LDX /Pearlman Church
4 is my favorite. Most natural sounding, with a nice top end, though it does seem to distort sooner than the others. 3 is darker, almost ribbon like. 2 (my 2nd favorite) sounds more detailed than 1. 5 has a resonance that sounds like it's caused by the grill. I'm guessing it's a cheap mic. The noise and hum audible between vocal phrases was more pronounced on some mics more than others.
Number 2 is my favorite, and is the ELAM 251; me thinks. Followed by number 3. The rest sound similar. The 5th is the UAD Sphere mic.
It’s gotta be right? Sponsored by UA might be the giveaway… im curious though!
Thanks for guessing!!
@@tshrdrums what do you think the others are?
@@Producelikeapro playing the long game haha…want to revisit these tomorrow. I think #2 is the Warm right off the bat. What about you?
And, older gear has been broken and not be compared with comparable new units,..new stuff sounds more tight/digital than units from the 60s...in a mix, I don't care; as long as it sounds right..my uad sphere is a game changer!
I'd say the mystery mic's definitely NOT a Shure SM-7B, but I could be wrong of course. It must be a condenser as well, because I can still hear the same amount (even though it's very little) of room verb on that particular example
I assume the mystery is an Upton. Love mine!
When do we get the results? On pins and needles here
I really liked #2 & #3. I think #2 I think is the Vintage ELA M251 and the #3 is the UA 251.
1 and 2 sounded good to me. I enjoyed the bottom of 2 and the smoothness of 1.
Great stuff Warren
Thanks ever so much!
I think the mystery mic is a slate digital or Townsend with software. Mic 2 aounded great all around
My guesses:
1. WA
2. Circle Audio
3. ELA M 251
4. UA
5. Roswell Pro Audio Aztec
Thanks for sharing!
Haven’t watched it yet but I think 5 would be slate digital model mic. The only reason I don’t think it’s the UA sphere is because UA is already a sponsor and Matt said another mystery sponsor. 🤞🏽
I think
I like 3 best, and have no
idea what it is. Was the mystery one 1? Mic 1 was my second choice, if I couldn't have mic 3.
I haven’t used a 251 in the studio before but I’m gonna go with
1 Bock
2 Circle
3 Elam
4 Warm
5 Upton
Thanks for guessing!
5th is either Realistic radio shack Highball" or a 414
My guess, here we go lol
1. ELAM (or Bock)
2. Circle Audio
3. Bock (or ELAM)
4. Warm
5. Could be any..
Thanks for sharing!
I like 3 right off the bat. I'm hoping it's the Warm mic, I've been having a thing for them over these last couple weeks. & I like the ??? mic & I'm hoping it's a Lewitt. The others sounded so similar to me the slight transients get lost in a mix, Honestly they all sound REALLY Good. but yah I like 3 & ???. I'm excited to see the results & scared to find out how much I'm going to spend. :)
Thanks ever so much for sharing! I really appreciate it! What's the order of the others for you?
@@Producelikeapro My next would be 1 - 2 & 4 I didn't care for the break up on 4 but it's not a deal breaker, as I said they all sound Great. But it did make me think it would be a good mic for a singer like Sabastian Bach for those raspy miid excentuated vocals, or as a room mic for some hi gain guitars.
So my list would go
3 -
?? -
1
2
4
I can't wait to see what they are :)
I have no idea which is what, but if I were picking the one mic I had to use on all of those sources (average best), I would pick #4, then #5. I think they would require the least processing to use in a dense mix. I like this kind of shootout! but I am impatient, I wish the answers were a click away, maybe on the PLAP website?
Thanks for your honesty! I appreciate it
Reveal video is Thursday. Won’t have to wait too long
#4 was my favorite overall.
While such testing is fun, I can’t understand how one can comment on lowend frequency response considering the proximity effect of each mic will differ due to different positioning. Fun though I guess. Interested to see where the Warm audio mic ends up
My approach was to position things in a way to counterbalance that sort of effect. If one mic felt bassy, I moved it slightly to be less bassy.
To be honest, i'm not that familiar with the 251 sound. So i will not guess which is which. But i can say that i like Mic 1 and 4 the best overall. They had so much emotion in their sonics. The others sounded boring and empty for emotions. Now if one them is the original one. Then i'm glad that we live in a world where rare opinions are legal xD
Hey Matt - thanks for this video!
Thanks Cato!
I had a Telefunken 251 but sold it and bought two Circle Audio Evo 251’s
What an incredible compliment! Thank you!!! 🙌🏼🚀✨⭕
Marvellous!
I liked 1 & 4.
Thanks for sharing
There should have been a Telefunken TF 51 in there.
I think 4 is the circle audio, from other reviews on it it sounds pretty close, it’s an exaggeration of the 251 . Which ever is the warm from the rest… it’s pretty close…especially considering price tags.
Cheers
What do you think the others are?
@@Producelikeapro
1) Bock
2) Elam
3) Warm
4) Circle
5) GAP???
@@dimoscondos Thanks for sharing!
Like #3 best. No idea what it is. #4 was too bright for me. Mystery mic had too much room for a vocal mic. #2 was probably my second favorite, #1 my third pick.
Thanks for sharing!
Just for those considering the Warm Audio. Its not really a 251 clone, but its own thing. Also the included shock mount is garbage. The shock is also a clone - but an inferior one to the original Microtech Gefell shock. Other "clones" to consider are the Golden Age and the Aztec by Roswell which are both superb in their own ways. They're about £2k.
That drummer Is. A. Machine! -just sayin'
YES! Huge talent!
Has the reveal video come out yet? 🙏🏾
5 ,4 and 3 my fav
Thanks! Which do you think is which?
@@Producelikeapro I did said a msg before . Check it out . Thx if I get it right can I get a free mic ? Thx
1- Warm Audio, 2- Bock, 3- ELA, 4-Circle, 5- Avantone cv12? 2&4 might be swapped
after a new set of Kali IN-5’s and sub i’m upgrading my slate Mic to one of these
Any idea which one is which?
"Mystery Mic" on the drums reminded me instantly of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" drum sound from the "War" album by U2. Now I want to go give that album a listen.... As to guesses, I'm on a $500.00 laptop on my front porch. I'll give this a go someday when my studio is back up and running, no internet for the time being. (The joys of rural Pennsyltucky studio life!) I will say this though, I thought they all sounded great. That means that sub-$1k Warm Audio is one dang serious bang-for-buck microphone. There doesn't appear to be a bad mic in the bunch. I have a pair of WA84s and a WA47Jr and find their mics to be really great sounding for my personal recordings. If nothing else, this puts that Warm Audio mic on my long-term radar as I'll never be able to afford the others and I won't be settling for less in any way at all.
Mystery mic is an MXL770
I like number 2. I don't know what it is, but I liked it. 3 and 4 were kinda close to it. 1 was not really good. 5 didn't really have any soul.
Thanks for sharing!
I assumed 1 was the cheapest, it wasn't
@@metalman3227 Me too.
1-3 in the same ballpark, 4 rather thin and brittle, 5 dynamic? ELAM probably among the first 3, 4 could be the WA
Thanks for sharing!
4 is the telefunken, 3 is the warm, 1 is circle audio 2 is bock.
They are all very close sounding.
Thanks for sharing! What are your guesses?
I'll guess. Warm - Circle - 251 - UA.
1 sounded very close to 2, but 2 had slightly better bottom end. 3 sounded like it was in need of repair, so I'm guessing vintage 251. 4 sounded like a cartoon version of a 251, so I'll guess Bock. The mystery mic I'll guess is a Warm 47. Presence peak is moved down. Darker in nature. The room tone changes pretty dramatically.
Thanks for sharing!
251 - UA - Circle - Warm - Lewitt 440
Thanks for sharing!
Liked mic #2. Mystery mic sounded like an SM57 by comparison. (Listening on macbook speakers because I'm a professional :-P)
4 for me, my bias is to the Guitar
Which ones do you think are which?
@@Producelikeapro I have no idea but my ears really like 4, I like the blind test format, I went to buy a guitar and really wanted it to be a Martin, after the blind test I left with a Blueridge. I play more finger picking
@@mikerichardsonuki like 4 quite a bit on guitar and Terrell’s voice
1 - Circle Audio
2- UAD
3- ELAM
4- Warm Audio
5- Austrian Audio Oc818
Thanks for sharing!
Funny in that I put 2 as Warm Audio, but also guessed that 5 is the Austrian Audio.
I don't understand the point of these shootouts unless you compare the exact same part of the performance for each microphone.
you can download the multitracks
@@marcuspetendi7758 True. Thanks.
Download the multitracks and compare the exact area, just as Matt does a few minutes into the video!
@@marcuspetendi7758 and Matt does do that later in the video!
5th one maybe Roswell audio Aztec?
Thanks for sharing! What do you think the others are? What order?
My guesses
#1 Warm - bright, sounds pinched in the mids to me, really nice on the drums though!
#2 Circle - I felt this one was well balanced. Loved the acoustic for this one!
#3 ELA - loved the low and upper mids of this one! Best one for both vocals…
#4 Bock - I feel like this mic sounds pretty balanced. Not sure how I feel anymore 😂
Thanks for sharing!
Upton 251 for me!!
Thanks for sharing!
I downloaded the samples of the 5 microphones. Which one is which?. Thanks mates!
I’ve never heard of the 251, need to learn about it and see what its history is. I’m only here for Matt Weiss
It was a variation on the AKG C12, only in production for a few years.
Mic 1: Circle Audio EVO
Mic 2: ELA M 251
Mic 3: Bock 251
Mic 4: WA 251
Mic 5: Maybe, just maybe… FLEA M 251
Thanks for sharing!
Probably one of only two people that got it right!! Just goes to show people listen with their eyes more than ears!
AMAZING! Please consider Rosswell Mics as well next time :)
The Aztec? Amazing mic. Not really a 251 clone but its own thing.
I just came here to say "Give the drummer some!!!❤"
I thought I was the one doing 251 videos? 😁😁
Hahahaha Genius! Yes Two Five One! Hope you're well my friend
so you gonna leave us hanging? what was the mystery mic?
I once tried a vintage 250, it sounded horrible and nasal. although the owner said it was perfect condition, shows how much vintage mics can vary. I often use a Tele usa reissue 251 which sounds nothing like the vintage and sounds phenomenal. But honestly the room is 10 times more important than the mic! and there's a difference how they react to eq/comp, which is hard to demonstrate.
I think the 5th mic is a Slate ML1
Thanks! What do you think the rest are?
I can find any noticeable difference but the mystery one captures more room
I would love it if it turned out, that the Mystery-Mic was a SM58. I'm pretty Shure (sorry, that joke had to get out) it's not - but it would be funny 😀
Haha what are your guesses?
I'm not very experienced with such expensive Mics, so I can inly think Strategically
1st guess: an Industry-Standard so something lika a U67.
2nd guess: because you are involved maybe something really Cheap, so maybe something by Lewit.
3rd Guess: as I am from Vienna, I would love if it was one of the Austrian Audio Large Diaphragm Condenser Mics (I don't think that one could easily tell the difference between them without a direct comparison).
Matthew has refined hearing and knows what he's doing. You could call him a "pro"..
#1- I like
#2- its okay
#3- has character
#4- warm audio
#5- better not be a 57 😎
When do we get to know the results??
I find that when comparing vocal mics, what separates the men from the boys is how they stack vocals with harmonies and such. The ones that can’t hold their water stand out. We can even take it further by saying how the mic takes to EQ on those leads and stacks/harmonies. One sound in a vacuum does nothing for me. But it can be fun.
Very good points! I discuss the EQ a bit in the reveal video.
Honestly, I had my head turned away from the video for a bit and couldn't even tell when the mics were switching. It's impossible not to listen with your eyes, even when the mics aren't named.
Any preference I had may actually come down to the performance. For example, in the first performance I liked the sound of the 4th mic, but how much of that was because the singer was hitting a higher note? It's hard to compare a low note on one mic versus a high note on another.
Download the tracks and take your time! Thanks for listening
Genuinely it is hard to tell when the mic is switching. Grab the stems, some of the nuances will stand out a bit more
5th is Slate VMS
The 5th mic is a SM7.
I liked #3 the most.
That's my guess as well
#1 : WA. #2 : 251. #3 : Circle. #4 UA #5 : U87ai
Thanks for guessing!
@benoitlemieux8542 that was exactly my guess and I've never used a 251
This is such a great idea!
Thanks ever so much
