    I've had severe myoclonic jerks, that have ruled my very existence since age 7, now I'm 59yo. ÌF, I don't take my medications correctly and in a timely manner, my life has very little quality to it. I'm bound to the bed or the floor. Lay low, so you don't have far to fall. In 2010, I stood up, had myoclonic jerks and virtually shattered my fibula and tibia, landing me in the bed for 2yrs!!! Epilepsy is wicked, uncaring and unkind. There is NO end to this chronic disorder and, yes, it can be fatal. Stay strong mentally, physically and emotionally. Stay out of stressful situations, away from drugs and alcohol and blinking rhythemic light sources (i.e. ambulance/police lights, disco lights, xmas tree lights). Surround yourself around people who genuinely care about you.

    My myoclonic jerks aren't multiple movements in succession like this. They are one movement at a time that can occur in different parts of the body. They could be spaced out by a couple of minutes or much longer. Would these be considered myoclonic jerks or myoclonic seizures? I'm undiagnosed as of yet, waiting for a neurologist appointment.

    • @Joao-zw7iq
      @Joao-zw7iq 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mine were the same. I'm medicated and it is gone. I had one recently in a monday after drinking during the weekend and skipping medication. Did you take skull MRI? I found a little low grade tumor and an incomplete inversion of the hippocampus, which are probably the cause. Are you diagnosed by now? I take valproic acid.

      @@Joao-zw7iq I'm not diagnosed yet as I've been waiting ages for a neurology appointment, which has now been set for early May. I had an MRI ordered by the GP, which came back normal, however, one GP I spoke to said it's not the same type of MRI that would be ordered by the neurologist as the GP can't order those. So I don't know how much it would have ruled out.

    • @Joao-zw7iq
      @Joao-zw7iq 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phoenixfriend my first MRI was simple (but with findings) and then 1 month later I had an special MRI, with espectroscopy and perfusion (I guess this is the name in english, in portuguese is espectroscopia e perfusão), that confirmed that the tumor is low grade (not to worry, but I'be having MRI every 6m from now on). But those findings were accidental, and the diagnose of epilepsy is generally clinic. I take depakene (depakote) and the myoclonics stopped.

    Does the limb/extremity have to move for it to be considered a myoclonic seizure? Or is a twitch of a muscle that doesn't cause a limb to move considered one as well?
    Curious as I have been diagnosed with epilepsy for several years now but the doctors have never told me what kind of seizure I have, this seems to line up with what I have noticed.

    • @ApurvaPopat
      @ApurvaPopat  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If it is a simple muscle twitch which usually doesn't cause problem, thats physiological myoclonus.
      By definition myoclonic epilepsy is when you experience spasm, jerks or limb movements which requires treatment of underlying cause (many conditions can cause this). If it is still yet not resolved then you might need anti-epileptic medications.

      The specialist put me on med as soon as he spoke to me and my mum back in 2020 after a urgent referral from the GP because I had few seizures back to back at college which I didn't realise at the time.
