Kuroshima Island is 144km from Kagoshima Port, and is the largest of the three islands of Mishima Village, and the furthest from Kagoshima. It is called Kuroshima Island because the deep, steep mountain range with a mountain stream looks black, and it is also commonly known as Kuroo Island. It has a subtropical oceanic climate, and in some years the annual rainfall is 3,100mm. Many stone tools from the Jomon period and relics from the late Jomon to Yayoi periods have been discovered on the island, and it is believed that people settled on this island earlier than Takeshima and Iwo Jima. In the legend of the Heike refugees, it is said that the nobles lived in Ozato and the warriors in Katadomari. At the end of the Pacific War, four special attack planes flying to Okinawa made an emergency landing, and the islanders rescued six kamikaze pilots from the army and navy. It is also said to be the island that saw off the last of the battleship Yamato as it set out for Okinawa. Currently, the industry is year-round grazing of beef cattle on the steep slopes, and the development of ports is difficult due to the terrain, so fishing is not thriving. There are two villages, Warado and Seja, on the east and west of the island, and the two villages are connected by prefectural roads, village roads, and forest roads. Mishima has the most successors to the primary industry in Mishima Village. Compared to the other two islands, there is more forest on the island, and 70% of the island is covered with thunbergia trees, and in 2011, it was designated a national natural monument as the "Satsuma Kuroshima Forest Plant Community." The entire island is included in the Mishima Village Kikai Caldera Geopark. Since 2005, shochu has been produced by a brewery outside the island using sweet potatoes grown on the island, but after the island was certified as a shochu special zone, the first publicly-owned sweet potato shochu brewery in the country, "Mishima Shochu: Muku no Kura," was completed in September 2018. Shochu made entirely on the island has been shipped since 2019, and it is attracting attention as a new specialty of the village.

マンボウさん、三島村探訪お疲れさまでした。平家の落人伝説、ここにもあったのですね。本土の辺鄙な山深い所から鹿児島の離島まで…落人はどんな思いでここまでにたどり着いたのか？歴史を感じざろうえないです。漁業が厳しい所で、ここに暮らしておられる住民の方は、何で生計をたてておられるのかも気になるところです。これからも楽しみにしております。

いつもありがとうございます。いい島ですね。特に神社の二重屋根とか、台風に備えた雨戸抑えとか、海岸線の断崖絶壁ぐあい、焼酎の蔵元がいい。とてもお疲れさまでした。

エバドンの墓、ちょこっと出ましたが男子禁制で片泊の女性たちが定期的に集まって謎の行いをしているそうですね。男子が足を踏み入れると恐ろしい祟りがあるそうです。本当かどうかまんぼうさんに行ってきてほしいです😮

素敵な島だとは思うのですが、とっても「普通」な感じがして不思議です。私は大隅半島を回ったことが何度かあるのですが、あの辺の集落みたいな感じで、離島である感じがあまりしないというか。。。インフラが妙にしっかりしている感じでありながら、商店とかがあまり見られない（人口から考えればおかしくないのですが）。うーん、観光地化がされていないからでしょうか？何をして食べているのでしょうね。。。というわけで、最後まで不思議な感じを感じつつみておりました。今日もありがとうございます。
そうおっしゃる通り、来島者に媚も売らず普通な姿が維持されている。でもビーチのない島、漁業が主ではない島はこんな感じのところが多いです。商店はありましたが、看板がないので一見分かりません。看板がなくても島の人たちはわかりますからね。そんな自然体の島里が三島村の良さかもしれません。
