    The difference isn't much between R425 (old curriculum) and R171 (new curriculum). With R171, it's only general nursing. While with R425 it's general nursing, community, psychiatry, and midwifery. However, these 3 other qualifications (community, psych & midwifery) that come with R425, are not specialities. Hence nurses are not getting paid for them. So for R171, after completing, if one wants to be a midwife, or a psychiatric nurse, they will have to study for an extra year then become a specialist midwife or a specialist psychiatrist nurse or a specialist of whatever course they chose. Then get paid for that. Otherwise an R425 nurse and that of R171 are exactly the same. They have the same scope of practice and they get paid the same salary. Also, the reason they introduced the new curriculum is because they want to improve the standards of nursing (hence introducing a program that will produce specialist nurses). There have been a lot of incompetencies from nurses, especially in the departments such as labour, so they are trying to produce nurses with specialized training for specific departments they will be working it.

      Well put🙌🏾 there’s no such a thing as the R171 being staff nurses, we already have staff nurses in the program. So why would they enter this new program to become what they already are. R171 are General Nurses then R174 General nurses with Midwifery

    I'm doing R171 this year in a college, we also do 4 years but it comes with 2 diplomas which are general nursing and advanced midwifery, we won't function (we were told) without the advanced midwifery diploma
    Reason for the change is to save resources cause nurses choose where they wanna function and waste the knowledge of the other courses. Another reason is that R425 bars were earned as rush courses, we'll be advancing in every field

    • @ladyzieh88
      @ladyzieh88 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thandohadebe it is but 3 years of general nursing which we were told we won't be able to function as professional nurses we have to do that 1 year of advanced midwifery then we'll operate but hey nothing is sure yet, we'll see nxt year how things turn out with the pilot group

    • @ladyzieh88
      @ladyzieh88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@londekabuthelezi6733 no one is sure yet but according to what they think they know, we'll leave with 1 bar, maybe the epaulets have changed color coz that's what I saw on the sanc website

    @mmabatshidinhlabathi1633 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    With the new curriculum (BNAM) one needs to add an extra year to add each bar after graduating. So one bar = one extra year and so forth.

    Very informative video Thando I’m sure this video will help so many people who are interested in studing nursing ..
    I feel like they trying to decrease the number of nurses because of the more colleges offering the qualification and another thing the curriculum at universities and colleges not being 100% the same

    • @thandohadebe
      @thandohadebe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're making a lot of sense Slee, but at the same time, nurses are in demand, all over the world.
      Someone told me that they probably took away the comprehensive nursing qualification because South Africa doesn't have a lot of midwifes (because people are tryna avoid litigations) , hence they now offer the Bachelor of Nursing and midwifery qualification. They're trying to produce more midwifes.

    Hi Thando thank you for the video. My question is completely off topic. Do university students get placed like college students upon completion of the degree or do you guys have to look for a job afterwards?
    Can you please talk about the advantages and disadvantages of studying at a university/college based on finances as well as finding a job and advantages and disadvantages based on ranking and advancing your qualification❤️

    • @thandohadebe
      @thandohadebe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Lehlohonolo.
      Yes University students do also get placed like college students. It was like that even before they introduced the department of health nursing busary. You only look for a job after completing community service and that's if the hospital you were serving in did not absorb you, but most of them get absorbed.
      Thank you for the video suggestion. I will do it.

    Hi Thando, can i ask? since R171 nurses do not have community nursing, who are gonna work at the clinic besides the R425 nurses who choose to work at the clinic? does this mean clinics will be in need of more nurses since most of them vele after graduating they just choose to work without even specialising.

    • @thandohadebe
      @thandohadebe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apparently you have to study at a university now to become a professional nurse, meaning even if you study at a college to become a general nurse, you will have to start ko first year in university cause you must have done a degree

      R171 College student nurse will graduate as a registered general nurse, midwifery course is still being discussed to be introduced after graduating. Basically College and universities will produce the same till.
