    Hi All,
    I work with Flir cameras and the thermal cameras can not see through things, so whether its a wooden hive or a poly hive the Flir camera will only show you the surface tempreture of the hive, which was confirmed in the video, it can't see through into the frames and the bee clusters. These things are great for looking at heat loss in houses or intruders in a pitch black area and although its interesting to look at the hives they really aren't any use in terms of bee hive management. A very interesting video showing thermal readings never the less.

      Cheers Steve. Thats a really uselful insight. I guess this was the reason for the video, just to give people my practical experience and show that the FLIR ONE really isnt suitable for any beehive management.

    Lawrence I own of these (the IOS version) and I had the same problem as you did. However, after reading blogs around the internet I found that you need a cloudy day, or go out in early morning when sun is just coming up. I have all wooden hives and when I tried this, I got a nice heat patten of the clusters. As soon as the sun begins to warms the boxes (all my hives face South) then there seems to be not enough contrast to show where the clusters are. I am not sure what effect the polystyrene hives have on the camera??

      Hey - thanks for your comment. Yes, sadly this is the issue. It will only work on days when its either cloudy/cold or just super cold, which really limits the usefulness IMO. The poly hives definitely give a worse reading than the wooden ones. One thing it identifed quite well was a crack in the side of a poly box. It saw straight through it. Its a cool product and works really for plumbing systems but not for beekeeping in any practical purpose, in my opinion.

    Good review. You made up my mind, the Flir android attachment is not for me. Thanks for the honest straight forward review.

    Note that you are filming during a quite warm day (10C). In winter you would expect temperature of 0 C and lower. It would have been cool to see a comparison of the same footage but at night. Then you should hopefully have a better visual as its colder and there is no bias coming from the sun. Also changing the color palette could help to reveal the cluster

    Those camera's only show surface temperature. I borrowed a IR camera from my local fire station worth £6500. I was trying to locate bees in a cavity they had. The camera worked great. And after talking to them about the cheaper ones they told me that they only register surface heat.

      Yes - I suppose I was expecting too much from a cheap android module. Id love to have a go on one of the expensive ones but maybe a bit overkill for checking on my bees :)

    Also know which hives need supers first in spring, in 10-20 years maybe standard tool for bee keepers.

      I will certainly keep on looking for a decent solution for this. It could be such a useful tool for so many aspects of beekeeping if it was reliable and would work in mild weather

    Have been thinking about getting a thermal imaging camera for ages. Having done a lot of research it seems that only the much more expensive cameras are able to detect temperature through material.
    With decent insulated hives having a thermal restance of around 7R it may likely take a camera costing a few thousand pounds.
    Thanks for the heads up. More TH-cam work required!

      Coincidentally, I was recently sent the Topdon TC001 unit for a review, free of charge. I have now sent the unit back to them and didn't film the review as I had exactly the same problem. It just picks up the suns warmth on all the boxes and you cannot see through. Definitely not worth the money

    Think it would work better on a wooden hive, i use only poly hives so you have just saved me £172.99 thanks for the cool vid

    Здравейте, купих си китайски HT02 за същата цел, но резултатите са като при FLIR ONE INFRARED. Ще чакам облачен и студен ден за нова проба, но вече много се съмнявам да ми върши работа.....

    It would be interesting to see what the image is like on a traditional timber hive. The poly hives have a high level of insulation and therefore it could well be that the polystyrene is doing a great job and therefore the device can’t detect any heat as little is actually getting out?

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Rob. I did it on the timber hives as well and it was the same unfortunately. I even went up again in the evening when it was around 5c and the radiant heat from the sun still hadnt died down sufficiently to get a good reading. I reckon it would work really well in Canada or somewhere where it actually gets pretty cold!

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did, but it was still too mild (back end of Nov) and the readings were just as bad. On a cold, frosty evening, I am sure it would work ok, but for it to be useful to me, it needed to be a bit more flexible and offer use throughout the year. I really wanted it to work! :(
