My dad and I saw Montoya way back in '76 at Smith Colleges Green Hall. We were in the third row, right in front of him. I purchased the tickets as a surprise birthday gift for my dad. It was one of the finest things I've ever done in my life to then. The concert was simply fantastic, and my dad, who was a guitarist for most of his life, was very moved with emotion, bringing tears to his eyes. We saw Montoya in the summer of '76, ... the following year, in May, my dad passed at the age of 59, after suffering a major cerebral hemorrhage. I'll never forget the joy Carlos Montoya brought to the both of us that summer evening. Both are gone, ... neither of them will never be replaced in my eyes. This IS Flamenco guitar at it's finest!
Roxie Rocker. I was overseas in the Military when I first heard Flamenco music & fell in love with it. I still love his music to this day. I’m 70 yrs old today.
Carlos Montoya re-visited ...this keep sake is kept as a reminder I once upon a time I shared conversation and tea with Senior Montoya..Waikkii,Hawaii.
In 1961 I had my first date as a freshman in college at the University of Arkansas. Suit and tie, date with a grad student, tickets were $5.00 (two weeks spending allowance), and I was to hear Montoya. I have loved this song, and him, ever since.
Il chitarrista che si è esibito nel brano malaguena e bravissimo come pochi eguali al mondo e può senza dubbio competere con Paco de lucia e pochi altri Complimenti
Yup it was a thrill..years have passed since those night sitting listening, break time chats and tea...I have had the pleasure of meeting up close two of the great jazz guitarist..Johnny Smith in Denver..Joe Pass at The Lighthouse,Hermosa Beach,Cal..both have passed gettin' down in heavenly splendor...Missed Jose Feliciano's gig at a club in East Los Angeles..his guitar playing is a superlative of musical magic...Charo does a fantastic rendition of Malaguena...
I love his music. And I first heard his music & then he spoke Spanish I really enjoyed all his performances. Thank you You Tube for the upload. Montoya is the greatest of all Flamenco guitar players.
Just listened to another, and very accomplished, guitarist play this. Montoya starts out at double time. Alrighty, then. And proceeds to play notes faster than my ears can hear them. What is he DOING??? Simplemente fantastico!
In a small lounge in Waikiki Hawaii, front row seat..Carlos Montoya looked at me and asked if I was Puerto Rican ,when I requested Malaguena..replying with a head shake he began to play and play he did,for nearly 15 minutes his music moved the room to absolute silence..much to my surprise, pleasant surprise on his break Carlos Montoya asked in Spanish if he could set..my reaction momentously shocking..I stood, replied "Si,por favor'Si''.Well he remained sitting drinking tea, asking if I lived in Hawaii..Said to him that I was a Marine stationed in Hawaii..He asked how long I'd been in Hawaii? About 8 months..on a two year assignment..He found that fascinating. Inquired where I was from, told him Denver,Colorado..Hawaii at this time had not entered the union as the 50th. state. Not to make this a short story..the next five nights I was a regular at the Kaneohe Lounge..The guitar master of Flamenco made those times memorable.
My Brother in law took me to see him in Chicago at Orchestra Hall around 1960. It was freezing cold and we drove downtown in a VW bus. The windows were all frozen over and it was freezing. I didn't care after that concert. Magnificent.
True--- I saw him play in Acton Massachusetts, sometime around 1971(ish). The venue was the high school basketball court. Also saw John Williams at U Mass, Amherst, same time general time frame. (BTW, I have no idea why Montoya was playing a high school in Acton MA)
I attended one of his concerts at Texas Tech in around 1960.Small room, in those days he played only acoustic, no amplifiers. No one better but some perhaps, just as good, Charo for one.
Amongst the great old masters. He performed without amplification to a pin drop silence. He created unique sounds in his own style. I heard him in Toronto in old " Massy Hall' - No mikes.
One of the most memorable and mesmerizing moments of my life was sitting on the second row in the Stevens Center in Winston-Salem, NC listening to and watching this genius perform.
Just did a Google search and found that he performed there on Feb. 11, 1984, so that must have been when I saw him. wakespace.lib.wfu.edu/bitstream/handle/10339/3385/ogb_1984-02-03.pdf
As Gwynne said. One of the Most memorable moments of my life was sitting up front in Oakland, Ca. Civic Center listening to Him play in concert. Back in the 70's. Mesmerizing to be in his Muse...
I have had a renewed interest in Latin guitar music in the past few years. i wonder why i love it so much. my Dad and I listened to Montoya all the time when i was very young. No one quite like him. What a treat! you poor people who gave this a hands down well Bless your heart.
I do not give a shit what the aficionados think: I love the " Flamenco muy jondo" played by Melchor de Marchena, Diego del Gastor, Dieguito de Moròn, Perico el del Lunar, Moraito Chico, El Niño Miguel and El Perla, but Christ, to me Carlos Montoya and Manitas de Plata, reviled by connoisseurs for not keeping the "compàs", are the most true exponents of what Flamenco is supposed to be all about. Totally improvised, fast and loose like their lives. Onore y gloria!!!!
I play this from memory but, not nearly as well as Carlos Montoya or My Dad. I'm much slower. I'm left handed and won't restring my Dad's hand built guitar.
I saw Montoya in concert at Wm. Jewell College in early 1978. Amazing flamenco guitarist, maybe even better than Sabicas whom I've only heard and seen on video recording today.
thank you ... this info helped me a lot for my youtube channel !!! a project that I'm doing of musical ephemeris ... thank you very much ... gracias...esta info me sirvió mucho para mi canal de youtube!!! un proyecto que estoy haciendo de efemérides musicales... muchas gracias...
Montaya my be one of the fastest dual finger players I have ever seen. Paco when he was young, about he same time as Montaya was already in his 60's was as fast. I can imagine how much faster Carlos was when he was younger. The Mastery is amazing, better than Segovia ever was for Flaminco that is.
Well, it ain't a competition. We can have a favorite, mine is Paco, but we can't declare the greatest in something as subjective as music. Incidentally, while I offer no opinion on the matter, in flamenco circles, many insist that Carlos was the inferior of the Montoyas, with his uncle Ramón being the true master.
My opinion as I was brought up in a household with a flamenco guitarist father and have been listing to flamenco more or less for 60 plus years and play guitar myself is that Carlos Montoya is generally an inferior guitarist. His musicality is poor and is technique is rough. I`d rather listen to the masters like Sabicas or Juan Serrano et al any day to get a real sense of how musical flamenco can be in their hands.

Wonderful story, congratulations for having provided your father with one of his great and last satisfactions of his life.

Three voices! One guitar, three voices!! The absolute granmaster.
In 1961 I had my first date as a freshman in college at the University of Arkansas. Suit and tie, date with a grad student, tickets were $5.00 (two weeks spending allowance), and I was to hear Montoya. I have loved this song, and him, ever since.
Alfred State College, now part o SUNY, ~ 1971, 10 years old: I realized only recently, that changed my musical taste for Jazz and Classical, for life!
This is a man that can play a GUITAR....awesome

Joe Pass too? Amazing.
I love his music. And I first heard his music & then he spoke Spanish I really enjoyed all his performances. Thank you You Tube for the upload. Montoya is the greatest of all Flamenco guitar players.
Watching him play always blows me away. This is truly unmatched skill
I was fortunate enough to see Carlos Montoya play back in the late 60s at Neville High School in Monroe, La
lucky

One of the best stories ive ever heard.
love reading these wonderful comments ... thanks for sharing.
💣💣💣💣💣💥💥💥💥💥
You expect flames to erupt from his guitar on his strumming. I am in awe!

Carlos Montoya es sencillamente impresionante.
best version ever. ( la migliore versione di sempre )
This music is a beautiful gift to the world , the best remedy for these stressed and troubled times !
I attended one of his concerts at Texas Tech in around 1960.Small room, in those days he played only acoustic, no amplifiers. No one better but some perhaps, just as good, Charo for one.
Probably the same tour when I saw his performance at San Antonio College. I was 14 then...now 76...and I am still mesmerized!😄
Superb! Muy bien Maestro! Que el Dios le bendiga!
Sentimiento y veracidad en el toque, autenticidad.
Fluid technique and very musical presentation. Amazing display of mastery of the instrument.
Amongst the great old masters. He performed without amplification to a pin drop silence. He created unique sounds in his own style. I heard him in Toronto in old " Massy Hall' - No mikes.
Montoya used a microphone when the hall was large enough - unlike Segovia who avoided them whenever possible. I saw Montoya many times over the years.
Saw him in concert once and it sounded like a whole orchestra coming from his one guitar.
Not Latino but I love this man
Rather odd comment.@@jhadziamfume6802
Excelente y original el gran maestro Carlos Montoya.
I saw him when I was a kid in Houston in early 1970's in Jones Hall. I still have his autograph on the program. So happy to see him here!

Gwynne Curry what year was that?
Not sure, but believe it was late 70s or early 80s.

Gwynne Curry thanks for thevanswer. I only know this fellow from youtube videos and only in the past 2 years
If this guitar god an Segovia got together I would love to hear the music
One of the greatest guitarists of all time.
Saludos cordiales desde El Callao Perú
Powerful notes, unlike some thin sounding players. Incredible ending. True flamenco power

I play this from memory but, not nearly as well as Carlos Montoya or My Dad. I'm much slower. I'm left handed and won't restring my Dad's hand built guitar.

Great playing. Mastery of classic guitar.
Lyles Fredidog how so?
@@lylesfredidog1507 His contemporaries were probably jealous.😄
Saw him in Philadelphia and was in awe of his flamingo. Brava

Thank you very much "el mariachi", to give us this divina musica and divin player !!!
I saw Montoya in concert at Wm. Jewell College in early 1978. Amazing flamenco guitarist, maybe even better than Sabicas whom I've only heard and seen on video recording today.

Power and grace! BRAVO!
the only thing missing was immediate thundering applause at the end thumbs up #710
Maybe they were all stunned from what they had just witnessed?
Ustalık budur, muhteşem!

A true master of the Guitar.
Van Halen credited him for inspiring "Little Guitars." Check out intro to song on youtube. Unmistakable Carlos Montoya.
برافو فنان رائع واكثر من رائع
He is my Grandpas brother If you couldn't already tell by the last name. Love his music! P.S i'm 14 not some 50 year old.
Teddy Montoya What’s your relation to Rosa Montoya?? She was my flamenco teacher and always so great to me! I’ve tried looking her up...
Awestruck .
Simply the best
Numéro 1

Greatest guitar player EVER.
Carlos Montoya is my best guitar player.
This rendention of Malaguena is the top\
Bravo your Excellency
I think that he was the greatest ever. still unsurpassed,,
You betchum Red Ryder.
"Paco de Lucia" was the best spanish guitar player ;)

He was great. And the man that inspired me to take up Guiter. Sibicas was also great and bears listening to.
This Flamenco-Spanish-Gypsy Master uses his Fingers only... whilst playing unbelievable Malaguena!!!
Authentic flamenco/classical guitarists do not use plactums. It is the beauty of fingure/nail combination.
Stefan Shikerov
Your knowledge of flamenco guitar is astounding, they use their feet too!
Holy wow! Giuliani is a badass axe man! And those guide wire cables he used as strings and made them sound like a divine harp!
Arte👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Sublime!
Inesquecíveis!🌳🌻
He has just perfect ability....
Holy cow, was he really that small? I'll never complain again about not being big enough to play a standard classical!
It takes 2 minutes and 22 seconds for the tune to mature to an awe inspiring piece
Then after the remaining 3 minutes and 29 seconds would indicate that the entire piece was magnificent cuz your brain told you to stfu and listen.
What is it with Spaniards and the guitar? Virtuoso before the rock star
o melhor
Only five strings on the guitar (as far as I can see). It looks like he removed the bottom (higher-pitched_ e-string. Anybody know why he did that?
Good point.
Heaven help us if this genre of music fades into oblivion.
excellent! what hands
What a talent.
Superb
Olağanüstü.
Bravo!!!
