Jerry Crawford was on the Close Call Sports podcast some time ago. He said that Piniella had been arguing with the umpiring crew about various things for the entire game and he felt the umpires had to show Piniella that they were in charge of the game not him. There had been a beanball war in the past between the two teams and Doug Harvey issued pregame instructions that warnings and ejections would be issued if trouble arose. Crawford apparently felt that Dennis Martinez's pitch was probably a breaking pitch that got away from him and thus gave him the benefit of the doubt that the HBP was unintentional--so no warnings were needed. Crawford said that he was later at a banquet or some sort of event with Piniella and that they showed this video. Piniella and he laughed about it but he said it was a good thing that Doug Harvey got between them.

@@kennethcurtis1856 He and Piniella were going chest to chest, just as Crawford went chest to chest with Jimy Williams in an incident in 2000. Williams said afterward that he thought Crawford was trying to bait him into bumping him. I'm surprised nobody got suspended after the Piniella incident. Crawford said Bill White, the president of the National League, chastised him after the Piniella incident. He said Doug Harvey was critical of his (Crawford's) temper.

I remember I was at a Mariners home game in the 90’s at Safeco , when Lou was running out of the dugout to argue a call at 1st base, and tripped on the last step and just flat out face planted into the ground. What does he do? Gets right back up and runs to the umpire and bumps him, gets thrown out. Lou finally leaves 5 minutes later after he kicks his own hat around the field for a while!!
