+sevensaynt 7 You think you need to gullible, but he got caught by the documentary makers and didnt back down. This suggests he's more about intimidation than deception. What're you going to do? Call the cops? They suck in Brazil. The only thing you can do is fight him. Also who cares if he's just doing it to get by, that isnt a justification. If you want to give poor people money then fine, but if they do bad things to you like fraud or theft then they're bad and there is no more to say about it. Thats what morality is, a way to identify bad people. Then you can in all goodness fight back if you have the means.

I'm a taxi driver. I've been doing it for twenty-two years... Scum like this give us all a bad name. We keep getting customers who try to lowball us because of clowns like this. It's a hard living when you come by it honestly. Customers who want a flat rate are insulting and I hate dealing with them. I will take the shortest way I know, but if you think I'm going to give you a "deal," you're mistaken. When you ask "Why?" it's because I'd be ripping myself off if I did... There are scammers on both sides of the transaction, especially those who come along with bad credit and debit cards, give a shrug when the thing comes up *DECLINED* and say, "That's all I got." and "It's not my fault you don't maintain your machine properly," and other excuses like that. Then there are the brats who run away into the shadows without paying. You never get your money, especially if they take a long ride into another town and you're not familiar with the area. You get guided into some dark alley and they're gone. How about, "I'll be right back with the money," and they disappear into an apartment complex? That always gets the novice taxi driver. You learn quickly to not trust anyone, and this kind of thing can happen anytime at random. Fortunately, about 99% of the population is fair and honest. Thankfully, so are most taxi drivers that I know and every one of them that I have dealt with when traveling in places where I've never been before.

Growing up in Mexico and now traveling the world many people have tried to play me those scams, from Traveler 2 Travelers Advice:
Always tell them how much you are giving them, that way they will know not to play with you. Also you always ask for the price of the transportation before you get in the Taxi and if you can you can try to low-ball the price.

    • @RedSquirreLx

you can ask some people around.
example: some people might tell you that the taxi will charge you $80 pesos to the beach and other will tell you $100 pesos. you can than estimate how much you will pay. but 1st ask them if they say $150 or something more than just say no that is before getting in. and pay wen you are off the taxi & everything is off.

Tijuana did any taxi tried to run away with your luggage in the trunk?

    • @nunobarros3629
      @nunobarros3629 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, Tijuana.
It depends on what taxi you are getting.
The prices on yellow cab are not charted, they are set by the digital counter up on the car's console.
On the other hand, there are the special cabs, blue, green, red or black ones. These ones are pre-paid and way more expensive than yellow ones.
The true tip is: Freeze the video at at 0:02. You will see the Opel Astra Taxi followed by a Fiat Palio also taxi.
Notice that both have Yellow letters on the end of the blue stripes???? That means that such drivers belong to a taxi company or cooperative and thus they are bond to a more strict code of good behaviour. And these drivers spend more money / year to maintain their licenses, differently from the naked-stripe driver you took.
Maybe this one doesn't even have a license to drive a cab, otherwise he wound NEVER grant you an interview....not for 50 reais, at least.

When in Mexico many years ago the drivers would play this game, or they would try to scam you on the price of the ride, sometimes quite heavily.
The fares were published in papers, as well as posted in hotels (trip from present to x destination) and this was absolutely the correct fare for the driver to be paid.
After being told we owed 12,000 pesos for a 4,000 peso ride, the driver grabbing a friend of ours and threatening to call the police, I said "Let go of my friend immediately and please do call the police so I can let them know you assaulted a tourist".
He suddenly looked very scared and let go of our friends arm instantly.
You see, it is a privilege to get a position driving a taxi as it pays well, and is considered a responsible position in society.
We gave him 4,000 pesos and got out of the car without any further trouble.
After this, our fares were always prepared ahead of time, the car exited on arrival at the destination, and the money handed to the driver through his window.
This avoids all confrontation in the vehicle, and a driver would never assault you in public for fear of losing their job.
Thank you for these videos, they are quite interesting!

Taxi drivers also usually pretend they don't know a route to your destination and take a much longer route so in the end it will be more expensive. If you are coming here and take a cab, I suggest you look for the shortest route on Google maps and pay close attention whether or not the cab driver is not cheating on you taking you on a much longer ride than it should be in the first place.

best way to avoid scams like this is to carry smaller currency notes on you. That way you can pay them the fare and if they throw a hissy fit you can tell them to fuck off and get out. Oh, and don't put your luggage in the trunk.
Giving a cabbie or a street vendor a large note is just asking to get ripped off.

im happy I speak more languages other than english. My second language is Spanish and I learned Portuguese, some Italian, some Russian and currently studying French. Those languages can help me abroad. It helps to know a little bit of the language because then they feel as though it is not so easy to scam you. I went to Brazil, spoke Portuguese and never once did they try scamming me. Although, there were instances of sketchy things but it was only a matter as to how they do things differently there rather than a scam. Lesson: at least try to learn some basic words in the language of the country you are visiting and don't expect people to automatically speak english to you or be able to understand you.

They would pick people up and bring to a warehouse to rob them. Now all drivers I guess carry a phone scannable ID and old retired taxis are immediately destroyed.

Here in Denmark, they charge 1 dollar per 25 seconds.
    Cab rides get pretty expensive.
They've introduced a new system tho, where you get charged .4 dollar per minute, if you drive yourself.

Beautiful country but i have always avoided it because of the people. Not that they are all bad, just that the number of bad apples are just too high.

That's really very strange. Why would he allow himself to be filmed? He would be caught the next day after this video was posted. It makes me think if he would be just an actor thinking he's being paid to pretend to be a taxi driver, to illustrate a problem to a documentary. Just saying. I mean, its quite difficult to understand why he would take that kind of risk. And using such an indiscreet hat and shirt! He's all dressed up for the film! To be more easily recognizable from a distance? That makes no sense. Taxi drivers are seen by hundreds of people every day. They stop and talk to everybody. And they usually work in the same area. I know all taxi drivers who work in certain streets. Just like in the other video, when a guy on the beach asks to have his stuff looked after while he goes for a dive. He's clearly faking it. No one would talk like he did. I'm from Rio and I know what I'm talking about. That guy also knew he was being filmed. On the other hand, it would be also quite hard to believe that they were actors being scammed by the producer of this video!

Come to bulgaria and you will get robbed by bulgarian taxi drivers because most of them use a small machine wich buff the prices by adding kilometers

It works both ways. This guy is a POS of course. I drove a cab in Chicago for a few years and you get passengers that try the same thing. They will give you a 10 and tell you they gave you a 20. The way to combat this is to keep the bill they gave you in sight at all times. i used to have a clip on my dashboard and clipped the bill to it until I gave them change. Then if we disagreed, I could show them the bill still clipped to the dashboard. As a passenger, don't let the driver put the bill out of sight or mix it in with his money. Better yet, do a simultaneous exchange. He gives you the change after you tell him the bill size and you hand him the bill while he is handing you change.

You're assuming the police come. Think about it youre in a foreign place with someone telling you gave them the wrong money. Alot of people will assume its a mistake and after he swaps it how do you prove to a cop hes scamming you? They can see the meter you said you paid he didnt whats the cop going to do?

    • @lolz2205
      @lolz2205 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    1. mark your notes

    2. always have the right change

Don't worry, fate is gonna take his soul. Taxi drivers are used to get robbed, kidnapped and murdered in Rio. Actually, if you visit Brazil (very happy place btw) DONT GO FOR RIO! Rio is sick in corruption and violence. There is a lot better places and beaches in the south of Brazil(richer area).
