    A killer series you've started here! This is a genre that gets little respect, but those of us who loved it then and love it now know how awesome it can be. Can't say I'm impressed with Roxx Gang--the poor singer can barely stay in key--but Dirty Looks rather reminds me of Kix (and their AC/DC inspiration), and Cats in Boots I'm looking forward to exploring. Thanks for the tips!

    Have and love all of these. Vain's "No Respect" has to be my favourite album of the glam metal era - so moody and atmospheric. Their 2011 album "Enough Rope" is also amazing - it sounds how a late 80's follow up to "No Respect" should have sounded!

  • @steveverboom

    Yes, great video. There are so many glam metal bands in the late eighties and early nineties that never got popular. I'm still discovering bands from that time and those are some good ones. Can't wait to see what else you dig up.

      I’ve literally got boxfuls!! Somewhere around 1,500 just in Glam Metal. So lots and lots to show if this series takes off.

    Awesome! I have 3 of the 5 you featured (Cats In Boots, Dirty Looks, Juliet)! Can't wait for more episodes! FYI: There was another band named Dirty Looks that released two albums on the Stiff Records label. Really good, but more new wave/ power pop (like early Elvis Costello).

    Beau Nasty - Dirty But Well Dressed
    Bang Tango - Dancin' On Coals
    Tora Tora - Wild America
    War Babies - War Babies
    Sweet FA - Stick to Your Guns
    McQueen Street - st
    Shotgun Messiah - Shotgun Messiah
    Kik Tracee - No Rules
    Babylon AD - st
    Shark Island - Law of the Order
    Just ten but I remember more.

      @@BrendonSnyder Pretty Boy Floyd debut album was pretty good too. Their image however was extremely flamboyant and in 1989 it was too much I think.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah i still have mine because of their cover of the Motley Crue song Toast Of a the Town. Since Motley’s version was unreleased at that time it was pretty cool that they covered it.

  • @kitoyobeni1
    @kitoyobeni1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Dirty Looks was a favorite that had a local tie (a few of their albums were released on the local label Mirror Records), saw them multiple times at local venues. I was happy when Henrik started releasing new material (and re-releasing the early independent stuff) and was gutted when he passed, RIP.
    Cats In Boots I liked right away when I heard them, cool guitar playing and vocals. I was a little late on Vain, but had the album back in the day. Roxx Gang were decent but never really got into them until the genre faded and I wanted more new stuff. Julliet is new to me, and I imagine is going to be tough to add to the collection judging by the prices on eBay. That's one of the drawbacks of finding these overlooked bands; their cds are usually out of print and hard to find at a reasonable price, lol.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah Julliet was one of the hardest albums for me to find. And even when I got my copy it’s not in the best shape so I’ve wanted to replace it for years but the prices are astronomical. I keep praying Rock Candy Records will reissue it.

    I think you are the first person I have seen on TH-cam mention Julliet . I have the CD and it is one of my favorites from that time . Great guitar sound , memorable hooks and great vocals . Dirty Looks with Henrik are incredible , love how they took the AC/DC influence but made it their own . Also like his band Rumbledog with Trip The Light ( Fantastic Love ) , what a voice he had . Looking forward to seeing the other bands you highlight from your collection .

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rumble Dog was great too. Basically just Dirty Looks under a different name for the 90’s. I seriously don’t think Dirty Looks ever made a bad album. And they have a lot too. Julliet made 3 albums but only the self-titled from 1990 sounds that way. Which is too bad. I wish they had made a second album at the time.

    • @TomDcanada
      @TomDcanada 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BrendonSnyder Yeah , not a fan of the other two Julliet discs . Each one sounds like a different band . The one with Dubrow and Banali has a very low budget , muddy mix with a terrible guitar sound . I agree with you on Dirty Looks , everything they recorded is worth a listen . Rhino Bucket has a similar AC/DC groove also , big fan of those guys too .

      I only learned of Juliet a few years ago. They must not have had a video as I watched Headbanger’s Ball pretty religiously, and I thought I knew of every glam/hair band at that time. Even the most obscure bands that got played once during the 2am hour. ( Some of those ended up being my favorite albums of all time). Also, my memory of Roxx Gang is that they were advertised pretty heavily during Headbangers Ball, but never actually played. I only remember their commercial, but it worked on me because I bought the CD and loved it.

  • @JeffMcCormack777

      @@BrendonSnyder I lean a little more toward the sleaze end of glam rock but one I always recommend is Demolition 23 which was formed in 1993 by Michael Monroe and a couple of other guys from Hanoi Rocks. Little Steven produced their album. D'Molls is another one I listen to and Baton Rouge put out a couple of good albums. There was a German band, I think they were called Hunter and they released a couple of very good albums.. Asphalt Ballet, Sweet F.A., Alleycat Scratch, Crystal Pistol, Beggars & Thieves & Lord Tracy all released decent albums. The glam metal, especially the sleazy stuff, that has been coming out the past few years has been jaw dropping. Beyond the stuff like Crazy Lixx, Crashdiet & Hardcore Superstar there's stuff like Crucified Barbara, Babylon Bombs, Backstreet Girls, Backyard Babies, Cowboy Prostitutes, Chrome Division, V8 Wankers, Vains Of Jenna, Sister Sin, Confess, Kickin Valentina, Razzamatazz, Last Vegas, Dirty Penny, Crank County Daredevils, Miss Crazy, Broken Teeth, Snew, Cruel Intentions, Suicide Bombers, Black Aces, Tales From The Porn, Bastardz, Sticky Boys, Bullet, Hell In The Club, Treatment, Diemonds, Dextress, and it goes on and on. A lot of people I know who are contemporaries of mine will tell me that the last decent album that was released was something in the early 80's but there's more music, good music, available now than there's ever been before. And there's countries that you'd never expect to have a really vibrant music scene that do. BTW, read your comment on John Norum, I'll check him out.

    I would throw Sweet FA in this conversation. They were from my neck of the woods...the only glam band from Indiana to make it to the big leagues. The debut, “Stick to Your Guns” is a great album and should’ve been huge. Being on MCA was the kiss of death for them, I think. That label did not have a good track record for breaking glam metal acts. Spread Eagle was another band on MCA that should have done much better.

      Hi Edmund, no in the end Grunge had nothing to do with it. There were other factors at play that had been building. • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the issue is that all of the albums have been on different labels and so it’s hard to gather the rights to it all for reissues. That said, the band never had a big following and so it may be cost prohibitive to reissue some of their material. I’m glad I’ve picked it all up as it came out.

    Another enjoyable & informative show. I really like Glam Metal & there were a few I hadn’t heard off. Here are a few Glam Metal gems I think have fallen between the cracks.
    Babylon AD - I love their self titled debut (1988). The follow up Nothing Sacred (1992), whilst not as good is still strong.
    Giant - whilst I’m not sure I’d call them Glam, that’s how they’re listed on Wikipedia so.... Again a fantastic debut (Last of the Runaways, 1989) followed up by a strong 2nd album (Time to Burn, 1992)
    Steve Jones (ex Sex Pistols) released an album called Fire & Gasoline in 1989 which is IMO is a Glam Metal classic. It has contributions from ian Astbury, Billy Duffy, Nikki Six & Axl Rose.

      Have the Babylon AD and Giant albums. They will be featured at some point I’m sure. But the Steve Jones I’d never consider Glam Metal. Maybe it’s just that I have him tied too much to the pink scene and with his collaborations with Iggy Pop and other from that genre.

      I do like their 2nd album but for me it’s the debut. However they don’t have a bad album. Yeah I’m a huge Julliet fan and don’t understand why they weren’t bigger. Do you have lead vocalist Kenny McGee’s solo album called Kenny McGee & Lefty? Fantastic and just like Julliet.

    Dirty Looks is the main choice here; every track is a gem. Haven't heard much of Vain's material, but what I have heard from them absolutely cooks. Interesting choice in Julliet; turns out I found and bought a copy of Heartless's s/t CD from a thrift store in my home state, New Mexico; it had a few scratches and I wasn't sure if it would play. It actually played well, and has some good tracks on it.

    • @BrendonSnyder

      Is the Heartless the debut ep that features the first single? Also is the inlay card missing the the spine so it’s blank on the sides not saying the band’s name? I’m curious as that’s how mine is and I lived in the Tampa Florida area and bought it new at the time.

      @@BrendonSnyder It's the 5-track EP. It has the front cover booklet and part of the back cover, but was missing the side tabs. After I bought it, I put in a blank insert to hold the back cover, and pressed red decal letters on one side tab.

      @@BrendonSnyder I meant to say for us they were a local band, and we were happy when they signed to a major label, and they did release another album that I am aware on their own indie label after leaving or being dropped by Virgin records. Live I remember them having a dirtier, more heavier sound than the album captured. I am thinking back when I was 17 and 18, which was in 1987, 88, which was a million years ago, but I remember them because Kevin Steele stood out. I live in Tampa and around 1989 suddenly some of the places began to be overtaken by death metal bands, which I also liked

      I don’t think the album has a good mix. It’s muffled and quieter than it should be. Maybe in that regard we are thinking the same thing. I grew up in Clearwater and remember seeing them open for many bands through the 90’s. Their follow up album The Voodoo You Love from 1995 was excellent. But it far less dirty sleezy glam Metal than the debut. They released a 3rd album too along with several others that were compilations or rerelease of demos and stuff. Wish they would re-activate the band. While like the Mojo Gurus too, I far prefer Roxx Gang. Also, thanks for the support and I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying some of the content.

      Not as often as they once did and they have moved to mostly obscure 70’s artists I think because Rock Candy has cornered the market for 80’s and Glam Metal. But they still issue CD’s. They have a website you can check all the current releases on.
